The number you want is not the number on the scale

Put a luggage scale under a strap round a hive and you get a total: wood, wax, bees and food together. Only the last of those is the thing you are trying to find out, and on a typical hive it is well under half the reading. Two deeps and a medium with ten frames each, on a bottom board with an inner and telescoping cover, comes to around sixty-four pounds before a single bee or an ounce of honey goes in. Miss that and a 140 lb hive looks reassuring when it is carrying sixty-eight pounds of stores.

So the calculation is a subtraction, and the accuracy of the answer depends almost entirely on how well you know the tare. The defaults here are reasonable middles for pine Langstroth equipment: five pounds for an empty deep box, four for a medium, and about 1.4 pounds for a deep frame carrying drawn comb. Your own boxes may differ by a lot. Cypress is heavier than pine, paint adds weight, and old dark brood comb loaded with decades of cocoons weighs noticeably more than the pale comb of its first season. If you can, weigh one empty box and one frame of drawn comb on a kitchen scale once, and use those numbers for the rest of your beekeeping life.

Hefting, and what it is good for

The traditional method is to lift the back edge of the hive an inch off the stand with one hand and judge it. That gives you roughly half the total weight through a lever whose geometry you do not know, so it produces no usable number in pounds. It is still the most-used method in beekeeping, and for a good reason: it is not measuring absolute weight, it is detecting change. A hive you hefted a month ago and can now lift more easily has consumed stores, and that comparison works even though neither reading means anything on its own.

The way to make hefting useful is to calibrate yourself. Weigh one hive properly with a scale, work out its stores here, then heft it so you know what that particular condition feels like on your equipment. From then on the whole row can be checked in two minutes with the back of a hand, and only the ones that feel wrong need a scale. Cluster weight is the weakest line and there is no way around it short of shaking bees into a box on a scale, which nobody is going to do in autumn. Figures of eight to ten pounds get quoted for a strong colony and three or four for a small one, but the honest position is that this introduces an error of several pounds into the stores figure. That is a reason to compare a hive against its own past readings rather than to trust a single absolute number, and it is a reason to keep whatever margin your local guidance suggests rather than trimming to the last pound.

What the deficit line does and does not mean

If you enter a target and come up short, the calculator shows the dry sugar weight that deficit represents and what that becomes as 2:1 syrup by weight. Read that as arithmetic, not as instruction. It is an upper bound in any case, because bees have to evaporate the water out of syrup and they burn some of the sugar doing it, so a given weight of sugar never becomes quite that weight of stores.

Whether feeding is appropriate at all, whether it is even possible at the temperature you have, and what target you should be working to are entirely local questions. A hive in a mild coastal winter and a hive at altitude in the same state need very different figures, and the target field here is deliberately blank of any suggestion for that reason. How much does an empty beehive weigh?

A pine ten-frame deep box weighs roughly five pounds empty, a medium about four, and a shallow around three and a half. Add roughly 1.4 pounds for each deep frame carrying drawn comb, one pound for a medium and 0.8 for a shallow. A bottom board, inner cover and telescoping cover together commonly run ten to fourteen pounds. So two deeps and a medium fully framed comes to around sixty to sixty-five pounds of equipment before anything living or edible is in it. Those are middles rather than facts about your boxes: wood species, paint, moisture and how old and dark the comb is all move them. What does hefting a hive tell you?

That it changed, which is usually what you want to know. Lifting the back edge gives you something like half the weight through an unknown lever, so it produces no figure in pounds and cannot be compared between different equipment or between two people. What it does very well is compare one hive against itself over time, or against its neighbour in the same row on the same stand. The way to get more out of it is to weigh one hive with a scale, run the numbers here, and then heft that hive so you have a calibrated feel for that condition. How many pounds of stores does a colony need for winter?

There is no general answer, and any single number offered without knowing your location should be treated with suspicion. The requirement scales with how long the cluster has to live on stores, how cold it gets, how large the cluster is, how much brood is reared through the period and how early forage arrives in spring. Beekeepers in the same state at different elevations work to figures that differ by a factor of two or more. The right sources are your state apiary program or department of agriculture, your county extension service, and the beekeepers in your own area, who have watched colonies come through your particular winters. Should I use a permanent hive scale?

It is the single most informative piece of monitoring equipment in a small apiary, if you only put one under one hive. A hive on a scale shows you the shape of your season in a way nothing else does: when the flow starts, the day it stops, what a week of rain costs, and the slow steady draw of a colony living on stores. Once you know that curve, the rest of the yard can be hefted against the scale hive and you will know what you are feeling. Whether it justifies the cost depends on how many colonies you run and whether you are within walking distance of them, but beekeepers who install one rarely take it out again.

Why is the bee weight in the calculation at all?

Because the bees are on the scale and they are not food. A strong colony is often put at eight to ten pounds of bees, which is a meaningful fraction of the stores figure, so ignoring it makes the hive look better provisioned than it is. The awkward part is that this is the least knowable line in the calculation. Nobody weighs their bees. The figures in circulation are estimates, they vary with colony size and season, and the cluster shrinks over winter. Treat the stores result as accurate to within several pounds rather than to the ounce, and lean on repeated readings of the same hive, where the bee weight error is at least consistent, rather than on one absolute number.
