Yield is the whole calculation, and it is not a constant
Wax rendering has one input that matters and it is the yield: how much clean wax comes out as a share of what went into the pot. It is not a fixed number and treating it as one is why estimates come out wrong by a factor of two. Well-drained cappings are almost pure wax and figures in the 80 to 95 percent range get quoted for them. Light comb that has only ever held honey is mostly wax too and commonly renders somewhere around 60 to 80 percent. Old dark brood comb is a different material entirely.
Every generation of brood raised in a cell leaves a cocoon behind, and the cell walls thicken with those linings until an old frame is more cocoon than wax. That material does not melt. Worse, it holds wax in it the way a sponge holds water, which is why a solar melter leaves a dark mat behind that still feels waxy and why pressing hot slumgum or re-rendering it recovers meaningful additional wax. Yields quoted for old brood comb are often 30 to 50 percent and can be lower. Enter a figure that reflects what you are actually putting in rather than accepting a default.
The cappings route
If you have not weighed the wax but you know the honey crop, the cappings are commonly put at 1 to 2 percent of the honey weight. Where you land in that range depends mostly on how deep you uncap: a heated knife taking a thick slice produces far more wax than a capping scratcher, and frames drawn fat in a nine-frame super give more again because there is more capping to remove. Two hundred pounds of honey at 1.5 percent is three pounds of cappings, which renders to something over two pounds of very clean wax.
The word doing the work in that estimate is drained. Cappings straight from the uncapping tank are soaked in honey and can weigh twice what they will once they have sat warm for a few days. Weigh them after draining, or you will overestimate the wax and lose the honey. That drained honey is worth having back, and the honey yield calculator assumes you recover some of it in its extraction efficiency figure.

Beeswax has a density around 0.96 g per cubic centimetre, slightly less than water, which is why a wax block floats and why a pound of wax is about 29 cubic inches. That figure is the one to use when sizing a mould, since candle moulds are sold by volume and wax is bought by weight.
Two practical deductions come off any of those counts. Some wax stays in the pot, the moulds and the strainer every time, and a candle that comes out with a sunken top gets topped up from the same batch. Order or render a margin rather than exactly what the arithmetic says.
Heat, safety and where the wax came from
Beeswax melts around 145 F and it burns. It has a flash point and a wax fire behaves like an oil fire, meaning water makes it dramatically worse. Melt over water in a double boiler or a dedicated pot in a water bath, never on direct heat and never unattended, and keep the temperature well below anything that smokes. Overheating also darkens wax and drives off the scent that is most of the reason for using it. A pot used for wax is a wax pot from then on, so use one you are willing to lose.
Provenance matters for anything that will touch food or skin. Wax is a fat and it absorbs and retains what it is exposed to, over years, and it does not shed it in rendering. That is a good reason to render your own comb rather than buying wax of unknown history for wraps, balms or anything similar, and a reason not to accept old frames from a beekeeper whose management you know nothing about. If the wax is going back to the bees as foundation, the hive equipment and split planner tells you how many sheets a given expansion needs, which is usually the number that decides whether you have enough.

Cappings are the best wax you will get, and they are commonly estimated at 1 to 2 percent of the honey weight before rendering, with rendering yields often in the 80 to 95 percent range once they are properly drained. Two hundred pounds of honey uncapped with a knife might give three pounds of drained cappings and better than two pounds of clean pale wax. The critical word is drained. Cappings straight out of the tank are saturated with honey and can weigh close to double their drained weight, so weighing them wet both overstates the wax and wastes honey that would otherwise run out over a few warm days.
How many candles will a pound of beeswax make?
It depends entirely on the candle. A votive is around 2 oz, so a pound gives eight. A small pillar is 4 to 8 oz, so a pound gives two to four. Tapers vary enormously with length and diameter. Weigh one finished candle of the type you make and use that figure rather than a general one. Take a deduction off whatever the arithmetic gives, because wax stays behind in the pot, in the pouring vessel and in the strainer, and candles poured in a mould shrink as they cool and need topping up from the same batch. Sizing a mould works better by volume: beeswax runs about 0.96 g per cubic centimetre, which makes a pound about 29 cubic inches.
Is it safe to render wax on a kitchen stove?

Can I use bought beeswax for wraps and balms?
You can, but the argument for using your own is stronger than most people realise. Wax is a fat, and fats absorb and hold onto what they are exposed to, accumulating it over years rather than shedding it. Rendering does not remove that. So wax from combs whose history you know is a materially different product from wax of unknown origin, and for anything that touches food or skin the difference is the point. The same reasoning applies to accepting used frames from another beekeeper: you are taking on whatever those combs have been through. If you do buy wax, buy it from someone who can tell you where it came from and what the colonies were exposed to.
