Start from the gap, not from the splits

The instinct is to count splits: six more colonies wanted, so six splits. That undercounts, because not every split takes. Queens fail to mate, small units get robbed out, a cold week lands at the wrong moment, and a proportion of what you set up in spring is not a colony by June. Working backwards from the target instead — six more colonies at a 75 percent take rate means eight splits set up — is the same arithmetic every livestock operation does and it is the one that decides how much equipment has to exist.

The take rate is deliberately an input here with no recommended value. It is not a constant of nature. It depends on your method, whether you are raising queens or buying them, how strong the parent colonies are, and the weather in a two-week window you cannot see from here. Your own records from previous seasons are the best source, and beekeepers in your county are the second best. Anyone quoting a national figure is guessing.

Where the equipment count comes from

Each new full colony needs the same set: brood boxes, honey supers, frames to fill both, a bottom board, an inner cover, an outer cover, an entrance reducer and something to feed from. At two deeps and two mediums with ten frames each, that is four boxes and forty frames per colony. Eight splits is thirty-two boxes and three hundred and twenty frames, and that is the number that surprises people rather than the box count.

Frames are also where drawn comb changes everything. A frame of drawn comb is worth far more than a frame of foundation to a new split, because the bees do not have to build it, and the wax to build it costs them a substantial quantity of honey. Nucs, and what they postpone

Starting splits in five-frame nuc boxes is the standard way to make equipment go further. A nuc needs five frames rather than forty and no supers at all, so the up-front outlay per split is a fraction. The catch is in the word postpone. A nuc that takes will fill five frames quickly, and a colony that outgrows its box swarms out of it, which loses you the thing you were trying to build. The full boxes still have to exist, just later, and later is easy to misjudge when it is a warm spring.

Assembly time is the constraint nobody budgets

Flat-packed boxes and frames are cheaper and they arrive as a pile of wood. Three hundred and twenty frames is three hundred and twenty small assemblies, each one glue, four nails and a sheet of foundation, and that is a genuine number of evenings. Boxes need gluing, nailing and at least two coats of paint on the outside with drying time between them. All of it has to be finished before the colonies are ready, which in most climates means it is winter work, done in a cold shed, months before there is any visible reason to do it.

What no equipment list contains is the part that decides whether splits work: the condition of the parent colonies, whether there are resources to spare, how you get a laying queen into each new unit and when your season allows any of it. That is local knowledge and it is held by the beekeepers around you and by your state apiary program, both of which are worth having a relationship with before the spring you need them. Questions people ask

How many boxes and frames does one hive need?

A common Langstroth setup is two deep brood boxes and two medium honey supers, which is four boxes and forty frames at ten frames each. Beekeepers running all mediums to keep one frame size typically use three mediums for brood and two or three for honey, so five or six boxes and fifty to sixty frames. Eight-frame equipment reduces the frame count and the weight per box while needing more boxes for the same volume. Beyond boxes and frames, each hive needs a bottom board, an inner cover, an outer cover, an entrance reducer and a feeder, plus a stand of some kind. Set your own configuration in the fields rather than accepting the defaults, since the frame total is what drives most of the cost.

What proportion of splits should I expect to take?

There is no dependable general figure, which is why this page asks you for one instead of supplying it. The outcome depends on your method, whether the new unit gets a mated queen you bought or has to raise and mate its own, the strength of the parent colonies, how much brood and stores each split carries, and the weather during a narrow mating window. Beekeepers who buy mated queens and make strong splits report far better results than those relying on emergency cells in weak units, and both approaches are legitimate. Is it cheaper to buy assembled equipment or flat pack?

Flat pack costs less in money and considerably more in time, and the time is the part people underestimate. A frame is glue, four nails and a sheet of foundation, which is a couple of minutes once you have a rhythm going, and three hundred and twenty of them is not a weekend. Boxes need gluing, nailing and two coats of paint outside with drying time between. None of it is difficult and all of it has to be done before the season rather than during it, in whatever cold shed you have, months before there is any bee-related reason to be motivated. If you are expanding significantly and your winters are short, assembled equipment can be the better decision even at a premium.

Can I start splits in nuc boxes to save on equipment?

Yes, and it is the usual approach for exactly that reason. A five-frame nuc needs five frames instead of forty and no supers, so it cuts the up-front outlay sharply and lets you set up more splits from the same shed. What it does not do is remove the requirement. A nuc that succeeds fills its box quickly, and a colony that runs out of room swarms, which costs you the colony you were building. So the full boxes have to exist before the nuc needs them, and judging that moment during a warm spring is harder than it sounds. Plan the equipment for the target colony count and treat the nuc as a way to spread the spending across the season.

Can I buy used hive equipment?

It is common and it carries a real risk that is worth understanding before you take a bargain. Used boxes and especially used comb can carry problems from the previous apiary into yours, and some of those persist in equipment for a very long time and are not visible on inspection. This is squarely the territory of your state apiary program and a state inspector, who can tell you what is a concern in your area, what can be safely reconditioned and what should never be moved between apiaries at all.
