Two scales at once

An apiary is the only piece of livestock keeping where the footprint and the operating area differ by five orders of magnitude. Twelve colonies stand on something like three hundred square feet of grass. Those same twelve colonies are drawing nectar and pollen from a circle two miles in radius, which is about eight thousand acres. You control the three hundred square feet completely and the eight thousand acres not at all.

That split explains most of what beekeepers argue about. Layout decisions — spacing, orientation, aisles, screening — are entirely yours and are worth getting right because you will work in that space hundreds of times. Forage decisions are mostly not decisions at all; they are facts about what your neighbours planted, when the local trees bloom and what the roadside verges are cut. Planting for bees on your own land is worthwhile but it is a fraction of a percent of the circle.

Spacing that you can actually work in

The temptation is to pack hives close, because they fit. The constraint is not the hives, it is you holding a sixty pound box and needing somewhere to put it down. Three feet between hives in a row gives you a place to stand beside the hive you are working and a place to set a super, and it means smoke and disturbance at one hive does not roll straight into the next. Long unbroken rows are worse than short ones for a second reason: bees drift along a row of identical boxes and end up concentrated at the ends, so short rows, pairs, or groups facing slightly different directions distribute them more evenly. Painting boxes different colours or adding a mark by the entrance helps for the same reason.

Aisles between rows want to be generous enough that you are not standing in the flight path of the row in front while working the row behind. Eight feet is comfortable. The clear space in front of the entrances is a separate allowance and it is the one people cut first, usually because a path or a washing line was already there.

Two miles is the figure most commonly used for effective foraging, and it produces impressive-looking acreages that mean less than they appear to. Bees do not spread evenly across a circle; they concentrate on whatever is producing and ignore the rest, so a colony surrounded by mown lawn and maize has far less available to it than the acreage suggests. Bees also fly further than the radius when it pays them to, which means a shortage inside two miles is not necessarily a shortage. Use the number to hold onto the idea that a colony is working land you do not own, and to be sceptical of anyone quoting a colonies-per-acre stocking rate as though bees were cattle. Siting, neighbours and the things that are local

The practical siting rules are short and they are about people more than bees. Face the entrances away from where anyone walks, and away from a shared boundary. Put a solid screen — hedge, fence, board — a few feet in front of the entrances so departing bees climb steeply over head height rather than crossing a garden at four feet. Give the hives morning sun and afternoon shade in a hot climate, keep them out of a frost pocket, and put water nearer than the neighbour swimming pool, because bees will use whatever water is closest and once they have chosen it they do not switch. Access matters too: a full super is heavy and the distance from the hive to where you can park is a distance you will curse in August.

Stings are worth stating plainly once. For a person with a severe allergy to insect venom, a sting is a medical emergency, and a severe reaction can occur in someone who has been stung uneventfully before. Anyone in the household or on the property who may be at risk should raise it with a doctor before hives arrive, and any reaction beyond local swelling and pain needs emergency medical care at once, not observation.

The legal side is entirely local. Hive registration requirements, limits on colony numbers, setbacks from property lines and dwellings, and whether bees are permitted in your zone at all are set at state, county and city level, and a deed restriction or homeowners association covenant can be stricter than any of them. These differ sharply between neighbouring jurisdictions, so the only reliable route is to ask your state apiary program and your own municipality before you site anything. How far do honey bees fly to forage?

The working figure most beekeepers use is about two miles, which encloses roughly eight thousand acres. Bees will fly considerably further when the reward is worth it, and flights of four or five miles are documented, but efficiency falls off with distance because the round trip costs energy that has to come out of the load. Treat the radius as a planning device rather than a boundary. The more useful conclusion is not the exact distance but the scale: a single colony draws on thousands of acres of land managed by other people for entirely unrelated purposes, so what happens to your colonies is substantially outside your control and no amount of planting on a home lot changes that materially.

How far apart should hives be in an apiary?

Far enough to work in, which in practice means around three feet between hives in a row and roughly eight feet between rows. The limiting factor is not the bees, it is a person carrying a heavy box who needs somewhere to stand and somewhere to set it down. Hives can physically sit shoulder to shoulder and some commercial operations pack them onto pallets that way, but that is a different working method. There is a second reason for spacing and variation: bees drift between identical boxes in a straight row and accumulate at the ends, so short rows, staggered groups, different orientations and distinguishing marks near the entrance all spread the population more evenly.

How many colonies can one location support?

Nobody can tell you from the colony count alone, and be wary of anyone who offers a stocking rate. What matters is what is blooming inside the forage radius and when, and that varies enormously between a river valley with mixed woodland and a district of mown lawns and row crops. The honest test is empirical: run what you have, watch whether colonies build and store in the way beekeepers nearby report, and add gradually rather than jumping. Local beekeepers already know the answer for your area because they have watched it happen, which is the single best reason to join an association before you expand.

Does overlapping forage with another beekeeper cause problems?

Usually not on its own. Bees are not territorial, they do not divide ground, and two apiaries a mile and a half apart with two-mile radii share more than half their circles as a matter of geometry without anything going wrong. The situation where it matters is when the forage inside the shared area is genuinely thin, and then it is the forage that is the problem rather than the sharing. The overlap figure here is worth calculating mainly to be realistic about it: if you are moving into an area, you are almost certainly not the only colonies working that ground, and the beekeeper who is already there is a better source on what it supports than any map.

Do I need permission or registration to keep bees?

Possibly, and it is entirely a local question. Requirements to register hives, limits on how many colonies a property may hold, minimum distances from property lines or dwellings, screening requirements and outright prohibitions in some zones are set by state, county and municipal authorities, and they differ sharply between places that are a few miles apart. On top of any of that, a deed restriction or a homeowners association covenant can prohibit bees where the local authority permits them. Do not reason from what a beekeeper in another state describes. Contact your state apiary program or department of agriculture and your own city or county office, and ask directly before hives arrive.
