The pre-season check, done before you need it

Everything on this list is cheap and quick in November and expensive and miserable in January. The point of doing it early is that a failed test in a warm garage costs you an afternoon, while the same failure on a cold morning costs you a tow and a day.

Batteries are the single highest-yield item. Most auto parts stores will load-test one for free while it is still in the car, and the test takes a few minutes. A battery in its fourth or fifth year that tests marginal in the fall is a battery you replace on your schedule rather than on the road's.

Tires: compound matters more than the tread picture

The main thing separating a winter tire from an all-season is not the aggressive block pattern, it is the rubber compound. Winter compounds stay pliable at low temperatures where all-season rubber stiffens and stops conforming to the road surface. That change starts happening well before there is any snow on the ground, which is why winter tires improve dry cold braking too, not just snow traction. The tread pattern and the thousands of small sipes do real work in slush and packed snow, but the compound is what buys you grip on a cold dry morning.

Whether you need them is a question about your climate and route, not about your ego. If your winter is a few slushy days a year on plowed roads, a good all-season with real tread depth may be all you use. If you regularly drive on packed snow, live on a hill, or face a mountain pass, the difference in stopping distance is not subtle. Buy them as a set of four. Mixing winter tires on one axle only and all-seasons on the other creates a handling imbalance that is worse than either set alone.

Two things people get wrong every year. First, pressure: air contracts as it cools, and the rule of thumb is roughly one PSI lost for every ten degrees Fahrenheit the temperature drops. A tire set correctly in September is meaningfully low by December. Check it cold, before driving, against the placard in the door jamb. Second, drive type: all-wheel drive puts power to four corners, which helps you accelerate away from a stop. It does nothing for braking or cornering grip, because those come from tires. Black ice and what to do when the car goes

Black ice is a thin, transparent layer that takes the color of the pavement under it, which is why it reads as wet asphalt right up until the steering goes light. It forms where the road loses heat fastest or gets no sun: bridges and overpasses with cold air on both sides, shaded curves, tunnel mouths, and low spots where meltwater runs across and refreezes. Late night through early morning is the window, and the most treacherous temperatures are near freezing rather than deep cold, because that is when melting and refreezing cycle.

The recovery technique is short because there is not time for a long one. Get off the accelerator. Do not brake hard, and do not yank the wheel. Look where you want the car to go and steer there smoothly, because your hands follow your eyes. If the rear end steps out, steer gently into the direction of the slide. If the car has ABS and you must brake, press firmly and hold, and let the pulsing under your foot happen instead of pumping the pedal, which is what the system is doing for you.

The real defense is upstream: cut your speed before the bridge, lengthen your following distance to something that looks excessive, and make every input, throttle, brake and steering, slower and smaller than you would in summer. Warm-up, defrost and the idling myth

Modern fuel-injected engines do not need several minutes of idling to be safe to drive. Roughly thirty seconds gets oil circulated, and after that the engine warms up faster under gentle load than sitting at idle, which also means the cabin gets heat sooner. Extended idling wastes fuel, puts unburned fuel past the rings, and on a short commute means the engine spends most of its running life below operating temperature. Drive off gently and keep revs modest for the first few miles.

The genuine reason to sit for a few minutes is visibility, and that is not negotiable. Clear the whole windshield, all the side glass, the rear window, the mirrors, the lights and the roof. Snow left on the roof slides forward onto your own windshield under braking and off the back into the car behind you. Use the air conditioning compressor together with heat to defog faster, since the system dehumidifies the air, and aim airflow at the glass rather than at your feet.

Parking, wipers and the small habits

Park facing east if you have the choice and let the sun do the first pass on your windshield. Leave the parking brake off on a car that will sit in wet freezing conditions, since a cable-operated brake can freeze engaged, and use the transmission and wheel chocks on a slope instead. Lift the wiper arms off the glass before freezing rain, or better, cover the windshield, because blades frozen to the glass tear when the wipers switch on and a stripped blade will ruin your visibility on the drive that matters. Never use the wipers to clear ice. Keep the fuel tank fuller than usual, both against condensation and because a half tank is hours of heat if you end up stopped.
