How many channels you actually need
Channels means cameras. A single-channel unit records forward only. A dual-channel adds a rear camera, usually a small module wired to the back glass. Three-channel setups add an interior-facing camera, which is standard equipment for rideshare and delivery drivers and mostly unnecessary for everyone else.

The argument for the rear channel is straightforward: a rear-end collision is the incident type you are least likely to have caused and least able to describe, since you did not see it coming. It is also the one where the other driver's account and yours diverge most. If you are only adding one thing to a front camera, add the rear.
Resolution is not the spec that matters
Box copy sells resolution, and resolution is the wrong thing to shop on past a point. What you actually need is a readable license plate at a useful distance, at night, on a moving vehicle. That depends on sensor quality in low light, lens aperture, bitrate, and how aggressively the camera compresses, at least as much as on pixel count. A 4K camera with a poor sensor and a low bitrate can produce a smeared, unusable plate where a good 1080p or 1440p unit reads it cleanly.
Two features are worth paying for. HDR or WDR handles the huge brightness range of a tunnel exit or a low winter sun, which is exactly when the camera is otherwise blown out. A capacitor rather than a lithium battery for internal power matters if you live somewhere hot, because a small lithium cell sitting on a windshield in summer heat is a swelling and failure risk, and capacitors tolerate that abuse far better.
Higher resolution also has a cost you pay every day: file size. Doubling the resolution roughly quadruples the storage and shortens how far back your loop reaches on the same card. Buy the resolution that reads plates in your conditions and put the savings toward a better card.
Parking mode and the battery problem
Parking mode keeps the camera watching after the ignition is off, either recording continuously at a reduced frame rate or waking on impact or motion. It is the feature that catches the hit-and-run in a parking garage, and it is also the feature that will leave you with a dead car if it is installed carelessly.
The power has to come from somewhere. A camera plugged into a cigarette lighter socket that stays live will happily drain a healthy battery over a long weekend, and repeatedly deep-discharging a starting battery shortens its life permanently, not just for that morning. There are three sane approaches.

Fuse-tap hardwiring is a straightforward job for someone comfortable identifying a switched versus a constant circuit and adding an inline fuse, and a shop will do it in under an hour otherwise. Do not skip the cutoff, and do not assume the default threshold suits your battery. An older battery needs a higher cutoff than a new one, and in deep cold the safe threshold rises again.
Memory cards fail quietly, which is the whole problem
A dash cam writes continuously, overwriting the oldest file forever. That is close to the worst-case duty cycle for flash memory, and a card that was fine last year can degrade to the point where it silently stops writing valid files while the camera still shows a recording icon. Buy a card rated for continuous surveillance-style recording, in the endurance class rather than the fastest consumer card on the shelf. Match the capacity to how far back you want the loop to reach, remembering that higher resolution shortens it. Then build two habits: format the card in the camera itself every month or two, because formatting in the camera lays down the file structure the camera expects, and actually watch a random clip periodically to confirm the files are real, readable and correctly timestamped. Set the clock, and reset it after a firmware update or a long disconnect, because a clip with the wrong date is worth much less than one with the right one.
When something does happen, protect the file immediately. Most cameras have a manual lock button or an impact-triggered lock that moves the clip to a protected folder so the loop cannot overwrite it. If the camera has no lock, pull the card out of the camera at the scene once it is safe to do so. Every mile you drive afterward is the loop eating toward your evidence.
Where the law varies, and it varies a lot
This is the part where a national guide has to be honest about its limits. Dash cam rules in the United States are set at the state level, and there is no single answer.
Windshield mounting. Many states restrict objects mounted on the windshield because they obstruct the driver's view, and some specify permitted zones or sizes. A mount tucked up behind the rear-view mirror, high and centered, is the placement least likely to cause a problem and also happens to give the best view and keep the camera out of your sightline. Check your own state's rule rather than assuming a suction cup anywhere is fine.
Audio. Recording conversations is governed by wiretapping and eavesdropping statutes, which differ meaningfully. Some states are one-party consent, meaning your participation in the conversation is enough. Others are all-party consent, meaning everyone recorded must consent. A dash cam with the microphone on records your passengers, and in an all-party state that can be a legal problem rather than a technical one. Many owners simply leave the microphone off by default and turn it on deliberately. Look up your state, and remember that if you drive across a state line the rules can change with it.
Using the footage. Whether and how a recording is admissible, and what an insurer will do with it, is not something a guide can promise. An insurer will generally accept a clip you submit as part of a claim, and it will be evidence for or against you both. Installing it so you forget it is there
Mount high and centered behind the mirror, then tuck the power cable up into the headliner, down the A-pillar trim and along the door sill to the fuse box or the socket. A plastic trim tool and twenty minutes gets you a cable no one can see. Take care around the A-pillar on any vehicle with a curtain airbag, and route the cable around the airbag rather than under it, because a cable in the deployment path is a genuine hazard.
