A shop quotes 5,000 miles for the next oil change, the manual says 10,000, and the sticker on the windshield says whichever is sooner for the shop. All three can be defensible answers, and only one of them was written by someone who knows what oil your engine takes.

Why a generic chart cannot be your schedule

Every engine has a maintenance schedule written by the people who built it. It lives in the owner's manual, it is usually repeated in the manufacturer's app or owner portal, and it accounts for things a website cannot know: the oil specification the engine was designed around, the coolant chemistry it tolerates, whether the transmission has a serviceable filter, and whether the camshafts are driven by a belt or a chain. Two cars sitting side by side in the same parking lot, same model year, different engines, can have oil intervals that differ by a factor of two.

So what is a chart good for? Planning. Knowing that spark plugs are somewhere on the horizon lets you budget for them and ask about them at the next visit, instead of finding out when the car starts stumbling. Use the ranges below to know what questions to ask, then open the manual for the number that actually governs.

One more thing worth saying plainly: a shop's recommendation is not the manufacturer's schedule. Shops often default to a conservative interval because it is a single number they can apply to every car that rolls in, and because service is where the margin is. That does not make them dishonest. It does mean the sticker on your windshield is a shop policy, not an engineering requirement.

The timing belt row is the only one on this list where being late has a catastrophic failure mode. Many engines are what is called interference designs, meaning the valves and pistons occupy the same space at different moments. If the belt snaps, they occupy it at the same moment and the engine is finished. Timing chains are generally designed to last the life of the engine and are not on a replacement interval, but they are not immortal either, and a rattle on cold start is worth investigating. Find out which one your engine has. It is a thirty-second search and it changes how seriously you take one line item.

Severe service is the normal schedule for most drivers

Manuals typically publish two schedules, normal and severe. People read the word severe, picture a work truck hauling gravel through the desert, and file themselves under normal. Then they read the actual definition, which usually includes some combination of the following.

A short commute in a cold climate hits three of those. If your driving looks like the severe column, use the severe intervals. That is not an upsell, it is the schedule the manufacturer wrote for exactly your case.

The four checks worth doing yourself

Tires. Tread depth is the obvious one, and the coin test gets you close enough to know whether to worry. What people miss is age. Every tire carries a DOT code ending in four digits: the week and year it was made, so 2224 is the twenty-second week of 2024. Rubber hardens whether or not the car moves, and a tire with plenty of tread that has been on the car for a decade is not the tire you want in a hard stop. Check pressure cold, against the placard in the driver's door jamb, not the maximum molded into the sidewall. Brakes. Most pads have a wear indicator that squeals before the pad is gone. A grinding noise is past that point and is now costing you rotors as well. A pedal that sinks slowly under steady pressure, or that has gone soft, is a hydraulic problem and is not something to schedule for next month.

Battery. A resting voltage of roughly 12.6 volts on a battery that has sat a few hours is healthy, around 12.4 is partly discharged, and below about 12.2 wants a charge and an explanation. Most auto parts chains will load-test a battery free while it is in the car. Heat is what kills batteries, so hot-climate cars tend to fail toward the short end of the three-to-five-year range, and they usually fail on the first genuinely cold morning after.

Fluids. Oil level and color on a cold engine on level ground. Coolant level at the reservoir, cold only, because opening a hot cooling system is a burn injury. Brake fluid that has gone dark is telling you about its age.

What the work typically costs

These are broad US ranges at an independent shop, not quotes. Dealer labor rates run higher, metro areas run higher than rural ones, and anything on a European luxury platform can leave the range entirely.

Maintenance is only one line in what a car actually costs you. Fuel usually dwarfs it, and depreciation usually dwarfs fuel. The ownership cost calculator puts all three in the same column, and depreciation over time shows the part nobody writes a check for.

Keep the record, even if it is a notebook

Write down the date, the odometer reading and what was done, every time. A photo of the receipt in a folder on your phone is enough. Three things make this worth the thirty seconds: you stop guessing whether the coolant was ever changed, a warranty or goodwill claim is far easier to make when you can show the car was serviced, and a documented history is one of the few things that reliably moves the price when you sell. Buyers discount uncertainty, and a stack of receipts is the cheapest way to remove it. Questions people ask

Do I really need an oil change every 5,000 miles?

Probably not, if the manual says otherwise and you are using the oil specification it calls for. Modern synthetic oils and tighter engine tolerances pushed many published intervals to 7,500 or 10,000 miles, and cars with an oil-life monitor calculate a real interval from engine temperature, load and run time rather than distance. The counterweight is that short-trip driving degrades oil faster than the odometer suggests, which is why the severe schedule exists. Follow the manual for your engine, use the specified oil, and change it on time rather than early.

How do I know when tires need replacing?

Two separate tests, and either one alone can retire a tire. Tread depth is the first: many jurisdictions treat 2/32 of an inch as the legal minimum, but wet grip and hydroplaning resistance fall off well before that, and a lot of drivers replace around 4/32. Age is the second. Find the four-digit DOT date code on the sidewall for the week and year of manufacture. Rubber hardens over time regardless of mileage, so a set with usable tread that is many years old is worth a hard look from a tire shop. Uneven wear across the tread is a third signal, and it usually means an alignment or pressure problem you should fix before buying new rubber.

My transmission fluid is listed as lifetime fill. Can I ignore it?

Lifetime means the life the manufacturer designed for, not the life you intend to get out of the car. Plenty of long-term owners and independent transmission shops change it anyway on high-mileage vehicles, on the reasoning that fluid degrades with heat and a transmission rebuild is an order of magnitude more expensive than a service. There is a real caveat: on a neglected high-mileage automatic that has never been serviced, opinions differ on whether a change helps or exposes wear that was already there. Talk to a transmission specialist about your specific car rather than taking a general rule off a chart.

What is the difference between a timing belt and a timing chain?

Both keep the crankshaft and camshafts in sync. A belt is rubber-toothed, runs on the outside of the engine, and has a published replacement interval, commonly somewhere between 60,000 and 105,000 miles. A chain is metal, runs in oil inside the engine, and is generally designed to last the engine's life with no interval. The reason this matters is failure mode: on an interference engine, a snapped belt lets valves and pistons collide, which usually totals the engine. Look up which your engine has before you decide how urgent that line item is.

Does skipping the dealer for service void my warranty?

In the United States, having routine maintenance performed elsewhere does not by itself void a factory warranty, and keeping receipts is how you demonstrate the work was done. What can create a fight is a failure the manufacturer argues was caused by improper service, the wrong fluid specification, or maintenance that was never performed at all. So keep documentation, use parts and fluids meeting the specification in the manual, and read your own warranty booklet rather than relying on what a service advisor tells you.
