The first ninety seconds decide the outcome
Whatever has failed, the danger is almost never the failure. It is being stationary near moving traffic. So the first sequence is about position, and the repair — if there is one you can do at all — waits.
The moment something goes wrong, get the hazard lights on and start looking for somewhere to stop that is genuinely off the road. Distance from the travel lane is worth more than anything else you can buy in that minute: an exit ramp, a shoulder wide enough that the car is entirely clear of the white line, a parking lot, a wide gravel apron. A car that is drivable but damaged is often better driven slowly to a safe place than stopped in a live lane or on a narrow shoulder. Keep as far right as the road allows on a right-hand-drive-lane highway, and if there is a guardrail or a barrier, stop where there is space to get behind it.
Some positions are so bad they are worth naming: a curve where approaching drivers cannot see you until they are close, the crest of a hill for the same reason, a bridge or tunnel where there is no shoulder and no escape, and the left shoulder of a multi-lane highway, which puts you between two directions of fast traffic with nowhere to walk. If you have any choice at all, keep rolling until one of those is behind you.
Stay in, or get out
This is the decision people get wrong, and it deserves its own thought rather than an instinct. Standing beside a car on a highway shoulder puts you in the path of exactly the vehicle you are worried about, and drifting or distracted drivers are drawn toward stopped vehicles with lights on rather than away from them. Being belted inside a modern vehicle, with the hazards on, is a protected position; being outside it is not.

If you do get out, use the passenger-side doors so you are never stepping into traffic, and take passengers and any animals with you. Reflective triangles or flares placed well back give approaching drivers warning distance, but placing them means walking along the shoulder, so make that judgment honestly about the road you are on. In poor visibility, night, rain or fog, the case for staying inside gets stronger, not weaker.
Jump starting, in the right order
The order exists for a reason: a charging battery vents hydrogen, and the last connection made is the one that sparks. That is why the final clamp goes onto bare metal away from the battery rather than onto the battery post itself.

Two cautions. Many modern vehicles specify designated jump posts under the hood rather than direct access to the battery, which may live in the trunk or under a seat, and some manufacturers restrict jump starting outright for electrical reasons — the procedure in your owner's manual overrides the generic one above. And a portable lithium jump pack removes the second car from the problem entirely, which is worth knowing before you find yourself waving at strangers.
Now the diagnostic that matters more than the jump. A battery that goes flat once and is jumped will usually go flat again, because whatever discharged it — age, a parasitic drain, a door left ajar, sulfation from repeated deep discharge — has not changed. The jump gets you moving; it does not fix anything. Most auto parts chains test batteries and charging systems free while the battery is still in the car, and that is the next stop, not home.
Distinguishing a battery from an alternator is simpler than it sounds. If the car will not crank but runs fine once started and keeps running after the cables come off, suspect the battery or its connections. If the car dies while driving, or dies shortly after the cables are removed, or the battery warning light comes on with the engine running and the headlights dim at idle, suspect the alternator — the battery is being drained because nothing is replacing what the engine is using. An alternator failure is a countdown: the car will run until the battery is empty and then stop, wherever it happens to be.
Flat tire, and the one absolute rule
Before anything else: a jack is a lifting device and never a support. It is not designed to hold a load safely, hydraulic jacks fail, scissor jacks tip on soft or sloping ground, and every year people are killed by vehicles coming down on them. Nothing goes under a raised car — no hand, no arm, no head, no tools you would want back — unless the vehicle is supported on rated jack stands on hard level ground. On a roadside, you are changing a wheel with the car raised only as long as it takes, and you are not doing anything else under there. If the ground is soft, sloped, or the shoulder is narrow, that is a tow call rather than a wheel change.
The rest of the procedure is worth rehearsing once in your own driveway, because the roadside is a poor place to learn where the jack points are. Park on firm level ground, parking brake set, transmission in park or in gear, wheels chocked if you have anything to chock with. Break the lug nuts loose while the wheel is still on the ground and taking the weight — trying to do it in the air just spins the wheel. Jack only at the reinforced lift point identified in the owner's manual; anywhere else deforms a rocker panel or punches through a floor. Fit the spare, run the nuts down by hand, lower the car, then tighten in a star or crisscross pattern so the wheel seats evenly.
Temporary compact spares are exactly that. They carry their own speed and distance limits printed on the sidewall, and they are meant to get you to a tire shop rather than to complete your trip. Worth keeping in the car, and it is a short list: a working flashlight, jumper cables or a jump pack, a tire gauge and a small compressor, reflective triangles or a vest, gloves, water, a phone charger that does not depend on the car, and a paper note of your roadside assistance number, since the app is on the phone that will be at 4 percent. Calling for help, and what to say
Roadside assistance may already be attached to something you own without your having bought it separately: an insurance endorsement, a credit card benefit, a manufacturer program on a newer vehicle, or a membership club. Check which, and check the limits — towing distance caps and per-event limits are where these plans differ most. When you call, the useful information is your location precisely enough for a truck to find it, which side of the road you are on and which direction you are facing, the vehicle and its condition, and whether anyone is in the vehicle. If you are on a highway shoulder in the dark, say so, because it changes the priority.

Should I stay in the car or get out after breaking down on the highway?

How do I tell a bad battery from a bad alternator?
By when it fails. A battery problem shows up at startup: the car cranks slowly or not at all, but once running it stays running, including after the jumper cables come off. An alternator problem shows up while the car is running: the battery warning light comes on with the engine going, headlights dim at idle, or the engine dies during the drive or shortly after the cables are removed. The alternator is what replaces the electricity the car is using, so when it stops, the car runs off the battery until the battery is empty and then stops wherever it is. Either way, a battery that died once will usually die again, because the jump changed nothing about the cause — get the battery and the charging system tested rather than driving home relieved.
Can I work under the car if it is on the jack?

Turn the air conditioning off and the heater to maximum heat with the fan up — it is an unpleasant few minutes and it genuinely pulls heat out of the engine. Then get off the road and shut the engine down. Continuing to the next exit is how a cooling problem becomes a warped head or a failed head gasket, and the difference in repair cost is enormous. Once stopped, leave the cooling system alone until it is completely cool: opening a radiator cap or a pressurized reservoir on a hot engine sprays boiling coolant, and it is one of the more common serious burn injuries in home car care.
