The aisle is the whole design
Every walk-in reduces to one subtraction. Take the room width, take the depth off it once for each wall carrying a run, and what remains is the corridor you stand in. A 24 inch hanging run on both walls of a seven foot room leaves exactly three feet of aisle. Take the room to six feet and the same runs leave two feet, which is a passage, not a dressing room.

Read the middle column carefully. A five foot wide walk-in with hanging on both sides gives you a foot of aisle, which is not a room you can turn round in. That is why narrow walk-ins end up with hanging on one wall and shallow shelving on the other, and it is why the shelf-depth column exists. Ten inches of depth per wall is worth twenty inches of corridor.
Corners cost more than they look
Where a back wall run meets a side wall run, one of them has to stop. The back unit occupies its own depth measured along the side wall, so a 24 inch deep back unit shortens each side run by 24 inches. In a U layout with runs on all three walls, that is four feet of side run gone before you have hung anything, and it happens at both ends of the back wall.
There is no clever fix. Corner hanging is reachable only from one direction and only for the length of an arm, and corner shelving becomes a place things go and do not come out of. The calculator reports the corner loss as its own line so it stops being invisible. Double hanging changes the answer, depth does not
Rod length is what a closet holds, and rod length is run length times the number of tiers. Doubling half your run adds fifty percent to the rod without touching the aisle by a single inch. Deepening a run adds nothing to the rod at all and takes the aisle away. Those two facts point in opposite directions, and they are the reason a well-planned narrow walk-in beats a badly planned wide one.

Shelf depth is a separate decision from run depth
A shelf over a hanging rod does not need to be as deep as the hanging. Folded jumpers, boxes and shoe trays sit happily at 14 to 16 inches, and a shallower shelf leaves the front of the rod open so you can see and lift a hanger out without catching it. Before framing anything

Two hazards, named without a procedure. Tall storage towers and full-height shelf units are top-heavy once loaded and can go over onto a child who climbs them; anything of that shape belongs fastened back to the structure, to the fixing schedule of whoever made it. And a shelf standard or a rod bracket held by drywall alone will pull out under a loaded run. What a given anchor will hold in a given wall is the anchor manufacturers figure, not a number this calculator will offer.
Questions people ask
How wide does a walk-in closet need to be?
The calculator will not name a minimum, because the answer depends on what you are willing to do in the aisle and that is your call, not a rule. What it will do is the subtraction: room width minus the depth of every wall carrying a run. Hanging on both walls at 24 inches takes four feet off the room width before you have any corridor at all. The aisle field is there for you to set your own target and see whether the layout clears it.
Is a walk-in better than a reach-in of the same wall length?
For storage alone, no. The runs on a walk-in wall hold exactly what the same length of reach-in wall holds, and you have paid extra floor for the aisle in between. What a walk-in buys is access: you can see the whole run at once, stand in front of any part of it, and use all three walls if the room allows. A reach-in with bypass doors gives you a shade under half the opening at any one moment. The trade is floor area for visibility.
Why does the back wall shorten the side runs?
Because two units cannot occupy the same corner. A back wall unit 24 inches deep projects 24 inches along each side wall it meets, so each side run has to stop that far short. In a U layout with a run on both sides, that is 48 inches of side run gone. The calculator reports it as a separate line rather than burying it, because it is the largest single loss in a three-sided layout and it is invisible on a sketch.
Should the shelf above the rod be as deep as the hanging?
Usually not. A shelf that matches the hanging depth overhangs the rod and gets in the way of lifting a hanger straight up and out. Fourteen to sixteen inches is what most people settle on for a shelf over a rod, which leaves the front of the garments open. A full depth shelf is worth it where the shelf is the point, as on a back wall of folded goods, and there the question becomes what actually fits on it rather than how deep it is.
What is the double hung percentage field for?
It is the share of your hanging run that carries two rods rather than one. Set it to 50 and half the run is doubled, which multiplies the total rod length by 1.5. Set it to 100 and the rod length doubles, but then nothing long has anywhere to hang. Most real closets land between 40 and 70 percent, with the remainder given to dresses and coats.
