Closet capacity is measured in inches of rod and nothing else. A wardrobe of forty shirts on plastic hangers wants about forty inches of it, and no amount of extra depth, extra height or clever accessories changes that number by a single shirt.

Rod length is the whole answer

Ask what a closet holds and people describe its floor area, or its cubic feet, or how deep it is. None of those quantities appear anywhere in the arithmetic. Hanging clothes occupy a line, not a volume, and the length of that line is the rod. A closet that is six feet wide and two feet deep holds the same wardrobe as one that is six feet wide and four feet deep, because the second one just has a corridor of dead air behind the clothes.

What does change the answer is the number of tiers. Split the vertical space and hang two rods where one was, and you have doubled the line without touching the footprint. That is the single biggest lever in closet planning, and whether you can pull it comes down to one subtraction: two short garment drops plus the clearance you want at the floor, against the height you have to the top rod.

Hanger thickness decides everything else

The rod inches a garment consumes is set by the hanger, not by the garment. That is why this calculator asks for it per class rather than assuming.

Swapping wood hangers for slim flocked ones roughly halves the space a shirt wardrobe takes. That is a bigger gain than most closet remodels deliver, it costs the price of a pack of hangers, and it is reversible. Worth trying before anyone starts cutting drywall. Double hanging, and the height it demands

Two tiers of short hanging stack like this: floor clearance at the bottom, then a garment drop up to the lower rod, then another garment drop up to the upper rod. With a 40 inch drop and 3 inches of clearance that is 83 inches to the upper rod. An eight foot ceiling gives you 96 inches to the ceiling but usually less to a rod, because there is a shelf, a shelf cleat and the thickness of the shelf between the rod and the ceiling.

This is the arithmetic that decides whether a standard reach-in can be doubled. It usually can, narrowly, and the thing that breaks it is not the ceiling. It is a long drop measurement taken from the one full-length coat in the house. Measure your short garments as short garments and give the long ones their own section.

The percentage you leave empty

A wardrobe sized to exactly the rod it has is one where every hanger touches its neighbours and nothing comes out without a fight. The allowance field is there because a closet at 100 percent of capacity behaves like a closet at 120 percent: clothes get crushed, get wrinkled, and get pulled out and left on a chair rather than put back. Nothing on this page speaks to what a rod or its brackets can carry. A rod full of winter coats is heavier than people expect, and the load rating for a given rod, bracket and centre support belongs to whoever made them. Ask them, and hang the brackets on structure rather than on drywall alone.

Questions people ask

How many shirts fit on a foot of closet rod?

Between about 10 and 24, entirely depending on the hanger. Slim flocked hangers at half an inch each give you 24 per foot. Standard moulded plastic at an inch gives 12. Wood suit hangers at an inch and a half give 8. This is why the calculator asks you to measure rather than assuming: the same shirts on two different hanger types differ by a factor of three, and no other variable in closet planning has that kind of leverage.

Does a deeper closet hold more clothes?

Past about 24 inches, no. A garment on a hanger is roughly 22 to 24 inches across the shoulders, so that is the depth a hanging section needs. Add depth beyond it and the extra becomes floor you cannot use for hanging, because a second rod behind the first would be unreachable. Depth is worth having for shelves, for a chest of drawers under a raised rod, or for a walk-in aisle. It is worth nothing for hanging capacity.

How high should the top rod be for double hanging?

The calculator works it out from your own measurements rather than quoting a figure, because the number that matters is your longest short garment. Take the drop from the hanger hook to the hem, double it, and add whatever clearance you want under the bottom garment. With a 40 inch drop and 3 inches of clearance that lands at 83 inches to the upper rod, which needs to be clear of the shelf above it. If your shirts are 42 inches on the hanger the same sum comes out at 87 and the answer may change.

Should I put the long hanging section at one end or in the middle?

At one end, almost always, and usually the end furthest from the door. A long section in the middle splits the short rod into two runs, and every break costs you the bracket width plus the awkward inch or two beside it. It also puts the tallest, bulkiest garments where you have to reach past them. The calculator treats the long section as a single block for exactly this reason; if you split it into two, subtract a bracket width from your usable rod for each extra break.

What about shoes, folded knitwear and everything that does not hang?

None of it is on this page, deliberately. Hanging capacity and shelf capacity are different problems with different units — one is linear feet of rod, the other is square feet of shelf at a workable spacing — and mixing them produces a number that answers neither.
