Interior width and opening width are different numbers
Framers set a closet opening to suit the door that is going in it, and the closet behind that opening is usually wider. A 72 inch closet with a 60 inch opening leaves two returns of six inches each, and those returns are the most misunderstood part of a reach-in. You can hang clothes on the rod behind them. You cannot see those clothes from the doorway, and you reach them by putting an arm around the corner past the jamb.
That does not make them worthless. Off-season coats, formal wear and the shirts you wear twice a year all live perfectly well behind a return. It does mean that when somebody says a closet is six feet wide, the six feet of daily-use hanging they are imagining is not what they have.
Bypass doors give you half a closet at a time
Two sliding panels on two tracks cover the opening between them. Slide one aside and the clear space is the opening less one panel, which lands a shade under half. It is always at one end or the other, and it is never in the middle. A rod that runs the full width of a bypass closet has to be worked in two halves, and the centre of it is the part you reach at an angle around the edge of a panel.

Bypass figures use a 1 inch overlap, bifold uses a 6.5 inch folded stack at one side. Those are the calculator defaults; change them to your kit and the table moves. The bypass column is always just under half regardless of how wide the closet gets, while the bifold column is the opening less a fixed amount. That is the whole argument for bifolds on wide closets, and the counter-argument is that the folded stack projects into the bedroom at hip height, which the bifold and bypass door calculator quantifies.
Depth: 24 inches does the job and 30 does not do more
A shirt on a hanger is roughly 22 inches across the shoulders and a winter coat a little more. Give a hanging section 24 inches of depth and the clothes hang clear of the back wall and clear of the doors. Give it 30 and you have added six inches of floor that no garment occupies, because a second rod behind the first would be unreachable and a shelf at garment height would block the rod.
The place the extra depth does pay is above and below. A deeper closet takes a deeper top shelf, which is where luggage and out-of-season bedding go, and it takes a shoe rack or a low drawer unit under a raised rod. Neither of those adds hanging feet. They add storage of a different kind, which is worth having, but it is worth having deliberately rather than by accident.
Rod position, and the mistake that catches sleeves
The rod centreline sits somewhere out from the back wall, and the clothes hang centred on it, so the front face of the wardrobe is the rod offset plus half a garment depth. Put the rod at 12 inches with a 24 inch garment and the clothes reach 24 inches out from the back wall. In a 26 inch closet that leaves two inches to the jamb line, which is where sliding panels and bifold hardware live. Push the rod forward to 15 and the clothes stand an inch proud of the jamb line, and every time a bypass panel slides it drags across a sleeve.

One hazard, stated without a method attached: a closet wall is a favourite route for switch legs and the wiring above them, and there is rarely anything on the surface to tell you. Anyone opening up a closet header, furring down a soffit or fixing a standard to a wall is working blind into a cavity that may not be empty. What is the standard depth of a reach-in closet?
There is no standard this calculator will assert, because it varies by builder, by era and by what the framing allowed. What is fixed is the requirement: a garment on a hanger is about 22 to 24 inches across the shoulders, so a hanging section needs roughly that much clear depth plus a little for the doors and their hardware. Closets built shallower than that exist, and clothes in them press against the doors. Closets built deeper hold the same clothes plus whatever you put on the floor behind them.
Why does my closet rod not run the full width of the closet?
Because the brackets need somewhere to land and the end garments need somewhere to not rub the wall. The calculator subtracts a side clearance at each end for exactly this. Beyond that, a rod that does run the full interior width extends behind the door returns, and clothes hung there are reached around the jamb rather than seen from the doorway. Many closet systems stop the rod at the opening width and treat the returns as shelf or shoe space instead.
Can I double hang a standard reach-in closet?
It depends on one subtraction, which this page does with your own numbers rather than a rule of thumb: two short garment drops plus the clearance you want under the bottom rail, against the height available to the top rod. A 40 inch drop and 3 inches of clearance needs 83 inches. That usually fits under an eight foot ceiling and usually does not fit if you also want a shelf and a shelf cleat above the top rod at a comfortable height. Measure your own longest short garment before committing, because the whole thing turns on that figure.
How much shelf do I get above the rod?
One shelf across the interior width, less the side clearances, which for a 72 inch closet is about 70 inches or just under 6 linear feet. What you can put on it is a load question this page does not answer. Depth is the free variable: a 16 inch shelf in a 26 inch closet leaves the front open above the clothes, while a full depth shelf boxes the rod in and makes the far corners hard to reach past the door returns.
Is it worth removing the closet doors entirely?
It converts the access problem into an appearance problem. Taking the doors off a bypass closet takes the clear opening from a shade under half to the whole thing, which is the single largest access gain available in a reach-in and costs nothing. What you lose is dust protection and the ability to shut the mess away.
