Two order lists, two different behaviours
Everything about ordering a tile counter follows from one split. Field tile is bought by the box and the box count follows the area, so it behaves like any other tiled surface. Trim is bought by the piece and the piece count follows the perimeter, so it behaves like nothing else in the order.
On a plain eight foot counter with six inch tile, the deck and a four inch splash come to ninety-six field tiles. The front bullnose, the splash cap and one outside corner come to thirty-four pieces of trim. That is roughly a quarter of everything bought, on a job where the trim occupies a strip a couple of inches wide. Double the counter length and both numbers roughly double; halve the depth and the field count drops while the trim count does not move at all.
Trim is the part that runs out
The practical consequence is about supply rather than arithmetic. Trim shapes are made in smaller runs than field tile, they are stocked more thinly, and when a range is trimmed back they go first. Coming up two bullnose short on the last day is a different kind of problem from coming up two field tiles short: a slightly different field tile can go somewhere it is not looked at, and a different bullnose sits along the front edge of the counter at eye level for as long as the kitchen lasts.
Corner pieces are the sharp end of this. They are ordered in ones and twos, they are a separate item from the straight trim, and they are the thing most likely to be unavailable. The output counts them separately for that reason — one outside corner with both a front edge and a splash cap needs two corner pieces, not one.
The grout joint number, and being honest about it

Those figures are the same formula the calculator uses, at an eighth inch joint, over the deck and splash the defaults describe. Joint length scales inversely with tile size, so halving the tile roughly doubles the grout. On a floor that is a cleaning and sealing question you can decide to live with. On a counter it is a food preparation surface question, and it is the reason tile counters fell out of favour in kitchens even while they remained perfectly normal in bathrooms and on outdoor barbecue counters, where the same joint length carries none of the same implication.
Larger tile cuts the joint length quickly, which is the obvious move, but it fights the other constraint: a counter is about twenty-five inches deep, and large tile in a shallow depth leaves few full courses and a narrow cut against the wall, which is the worst-looking arrangement there is. Six inch tile in a 25.5 inch depth gives five courses deep — four full and a cut. Twelve inch tile in the same depth gives three — two full and a narrow cut. That is why so many tile counters look the way they do.
Where the sink comes into it
A self-rimming sink sits on top of the tile with its own rim covering the cut edge, so the opening needs no trim and the tiles simply stop. A trimmed opening — the tile turning down into the cutout with a trim shape round the perimeter — adds a run of pieces set by the perimeter of the opening, which on a 30 by 17 inch cutout is ninety-four inches, or sixteen more pieces at six inch trim. That is a real difference in both cost and lead time and it is decided by which sink is bought.
Either way the opening is cut and the tile under it is bought, exactly as with a stone top. Nothing about a hole in the middle of a surface gives material back.

How much trim does a tile countertop need?
It follows the perimeter, not the area, so the honest answer is a count rather than a percentage. On the defaults here — a 96 inch counter with a bullnose front, a four inch capped splash and one outside corner, all in six inch trim — it comes to thirty-four pieces before waste, against ninety-six field tiles. That is about a quarter of everything bought. Lengthening the counter raises both proportionally; making it deeper raises the field count and leaves the trim count exactly where it was.
Why does the calculator count trim separately from field tile?
Because it is bought separately and it fails separately. Field tile comes by the box and a box has a known count; trim comes by the piece, is made in smaller runs, is stocked more thinly and is discontinued sooner. Mixing the two into one square footage figure hides the item most likely to hold up the job. Counting them apart also makes the corner pieces visible, and corner pieces are the single item most likely to be unavailable when the rest of the order arrives.
How much grout joint is in a tile counter?
More than people expect and it scales inversely with tile size. Six inch tile at an eighth inch joint gives about 3.9 linear feet of joint for every square foot of surface, so the 19.67 square feet of deck and splash in the defaults here carries about seventy-seven linear feet of grout line. Twelve inch tile roughly halves that; four inch tile roughly doubles it again. The calculator prints both the total and the per-square-foot figure so the tile size decision can be made with the number in view rather than after the fact.
Is 6 inch tile the right size for a countertop?
It is the size that fits the depth, which is why it is so common rather than because it is ideal. A counter is around 25.5 inches deep, and at an eighth inch joint six inch tile gives four full courses and a cut course. Larger tile cuts the grout length considerably but leaves one full course and a wide cut, which reads badly across the front of a counter. It is a genuine trade between joint length and how the courses land, and the calculator gives you both numbers for whatever size you try.
Does a sink cutout in a tile counter need trim?
Only if the sink does not cover the cut edge. A self-rimming sink sits on the tile with its rim over the opening, so the tiles stop and nothing shows. An undermount or a tiled-in opening needs the tile to turn down into the cutout, which means trim round the whole perimeter — ninety-four inches on a 30 by 17 opening, or sixteen more pieces at six inch trim. The selector switches between the two, and the difference is worth knowing before the sink is chosen rather than after.
