The layout decision happens before the first tile
Tile arithmetic is usually taught as area divided by tile area, which tells you how many boxes to buy and nothing about how the floor will look. The dimension that decides whether a job reads as professional is the width of the cut tile where the field meets the wall, and that width is set entirely by where you snap the first chalk line.
Take a 110-1/2 inch wall and 12 inch tile with a 1/8 inch joint. Start with a full tile tight against one wall and nine full tiles plus their joints carry you 109 inches, leaving 1-3/8 inches for the last piece. That is a sliver. It is fragile, it is hard to cut straight, it wants to snap on the wet saw, and it is the first thing a visitor's eye goes to because the human eye finds the interruption in a repeating pattern without being asked to.
Move the starting line so a grout joint sits on the room centreline instead and the same wall gives you eight full tiles with 6-11/16 inches at each end. Two easy cuts, symmetrical, and no sliver. You did not change the room, the tile or the amount of material. You changed where the leftover went.
Three starting lines, and when each one wins

The two centred options are always half a module apart, which is why they are a genuine pair of alternatives rather than two flavours of the same thing. If one of them leaves a sliver, the other almost never does. The exception is a room whose clear dimension sits close to a whole number of tiles either way, and the calculator says so when that happens.
Both axes at once, and which one to prioritise
A floor has two axes and they do not cooperate. You can often solve one perfectly and only improve the other. When they conflict, prioritise the axis whose cuts are visible from the doorway. In a bathroom that is usually the run you see walking in; the cuts along the tub and vanity are hidden by the apron and the toe kick and can be as narrow as you like.
Rooms also are not square. Measure both ends of each wall before you commit, because a room that is 110 inches at one end and 111-1/2 at the other will eat the difference in the cut tiles along one wall, tapering visibly. If the taper is more than about a quarter of an inch across a run, plan the layout against a straight reference line pulled off the most visible wall rather than off the wall that happens to be out.
Counting pieces rather than square feet
This calculator counts pieces, not area, because that is what the layout produces. A cut piece consumes a whole tile from the box unless the cut is narrow enough that a single tile yields two usable strips, which is roughly the case when the cut width is under half the tile minus the saw kerf. Where a run of narrow cuts is unavoidable, you can halve the tile consumption on that run by cutting from both sides of one tile, which is worth knowing when a box is short.

Cutting tile safely
Dry cutting tile, porcelain, stone and cement backer board throws silica dust, and silica dust damages lungs permanently. A wet saw suppresses it, a grinder with a dry blade does not, and a shop vac without a HEPA filter spreads the fine fraction rather than collecting it. Cut wet outdoors when you can, and wear a fitted respirator when you cannot. This is not a comfort issue and a dust mask from the paint aisle is not the right tool.
Questions people ask
Should I start tiling from the centre of the room or from a wall?
From a reference line you chose deliberately, which is often near the centre but rarely exactly the centre. The reason to work from the middle is that it splits the leftover between two walls, so instead of one narrow cut you get two wider ones. The reason not to is that rooms are not square and walls are not straight, so the centreline of a room measured at one end may not be the centreline measured at the other. What most tilers actually do is pull a square layout off the most visible straight wall, then check where that puts the cuts at every other wall and shift the whole grid by up to half a tile until the worst cut is acceptable. Working from a wall directly is fine in a small room with one visible edge, such as a shower floor or a closet.
How narrow is too narrow for a cut tile?
As a working rule, under two inches starts to look like a mistake and under an inch is fragile enough that you will break several getting them in. There is no code number here, only what your eye accepts. Two considerations push the threshold up. Narrow strips of large format porcelain snap easily during handling and setting, so a cut that is fine on 4 inch wall tile is a nuisance on 24 inch floor tile. And a narrow cut along a wall is also the piece that has to absorb any wall that is out of straight, so a 3/4 inch strip that tapers to 1/4 inch at one end is visibly wrong in a way a 4 inch strip taking the same taper is not.
Does widening the grout joint fix a bad layout?
Slightly, and it is a legitimate tool when nothing else works. Going from a 1/8 inch joint to 3/16 across ten tiles adds 5/8 of an inch to the run, which can be enough to push a sliver into a workable cut. The limits are real: the joint width has to suit the tile, since rectified large format tile is designed for tight joints and a wide joint on it looks wrong, while pressed tile with a slightly irregular edge needs the wider joint to hide the variation. You also cannot vary the joint along a run without it being obvious. Change the joint for the whole floor or not at all.
Why does the calculator want inches rather than feet?
Because the answer lives in the last inch. A room entered as 12.2 feet is 146.4 inches, and the difference between 146 and 146-1/2 inches changes the cut tile by half an inch, which is the entire subject of this page. Feet with a decimal quietly discard the precision that the layout depends on. Measure the room in inches, at both ends of each wall, and enter the smaller figure if they differ, then check the layout again with the larger one to see how much taper you are dealing with.
Does the layout change if I am tiling on the diagonal?
Completely, and this calculator does not model it. On a 45 degree layout the module along a wall is the tile diagonal rather than the tile face, every perimeter piece is a triangle, and the cuts are governed by where the diagonal grid intersects the walls rather than by a simple row count. Diagonal work also generates far more waste because triangular offcuts rarely fit anywhere else, which is why the tile calculator adds a percentage for it. If you are laying diagonally, snap the two 45 degree lines through the room and dry lay a full course before setting anything.
