The reason a filler is always in the order
Stock cabinets are made in fixed widths, most commonly stepping by three inches, and the wall they hang on was framed to whatever dimension the plan and the framer produced. A 122-1/2 inch wall cannot be filled by any whole number of three inch increments, because 122.5 is not divisible by three. The nearest cabinet totals are 120 and 123, and 123 does not fit. So the run is 120 inches of cabinets and two and a half inches of something else, and that something else is a filler strip.
This is not a defect in the wall or in the cabinets. It is what happens whenever a modular system meets a dimension that was never modular. Every cabinet installation has it, custom work included, because a custom box still has to meet a wall that is out of plumb and needs material to scribe against.
One filler or two
Given two and a half inches to lose, you can put all of it at one end or split it. Splitting it wins almost every time and for two separate reasons.
The visual reason is that a symmetrical gap at both ends reads as a shadow line, part of the design, while a single wide strip at one end reads as a leftover. The eye finds asymmetry in a repeating run immediately, exactly as it finds a sliver tile in a field. The practical reason is more important: a filler is scribe material, cut on site to follow a wall that is not straight and not plumb. If all the filler is at one end you have material to scribe against one wall and nothing at the other, so any deviation in that second wall shows as a tapering gap you cannot close.
The case for a single filler is when one end of the run dies into a corner or against a tall pantry where nobody sees it, and the other end is the exposed end that finishes with a decorative panel. Then all the slack belongs at the hidden end.
Reading the alternatives list
The calculation searches every combination of the widths you listed and reports the ones that land inside your filler window, best fit first. Best fit means the smallest total filler, which is usually what people want, but it is not always the right choice. Look down the list for a combination with fewer boxes even if it needs another half inch of filler, because each additional cabinet in a run costs money, adds two side panels that eat interior width, and adds another vertical joint to align.

Measuring the wall so the answer means something
Measure at the height the cabinets sit, not at the floor and not at eye level. Base cabinets meet the wall around the counter height and wall cabinets meet it five feet up, and a wall can be a quarter of an inch different between those two points. Measure at both ends and in the middle, and enter the smallest figure, because the run has to pass the narrowest point.
Check the corners for square as well. A run that turns a corner into another run inherits the error of the first run, so an out-of-square corner shows up as a growing gap along the second wall. If the corner is out by more than a small amount, the filler window at the far end of the second run needs to be wide enough to absorb it, which usually means planning for more filler rather than less.
What this does not decide
It fits widths to a length. It has nothing to say about which cabinet goes where, and that is the decision that actually determines whether the kitchen works. A sink base has to sit under the window or over the drain, a cooktop base has to line up with the hood, a corner needs a cabinet that can reach into it, and appliance openings are dictated by the appliance and not by the module. Fix those first in the already-decided field, then let the arithmetic fill around them.

Questions people ask
How wide should a cabinet filler be?
Wide enough to scribe and narrow enough not to notice, which in practice puts most fillers between about three quarters of an inch and three inches per end. Below three quarters there is not enough material left after scribing to fasten reliably, and the strip becomes fragile. Above three inches it stops reading as a shadow line and starts reading as a panel, at which point many people would rather step the run down a cabinet size and use a wider filler deliberately, or add a decorative end panel that makes the width look intentional. There is no rule here, only what your eye accepts, which is why both limits are fields rather than constants.
Why do cabinets come in three inch increments?
It is a manufacturing convention rather than a physical constraint, and it is not universal. Framed stock lines in the United States overwhelmingly step in three inch increments from about nine inches up to about forty-eight, because a limited set of widths keeps tooling, packaging and dealer inventory manageable. Frameless and imported lines frequently step differently, often on metric modules, which is why the width list here is a field you can edit rather than a fixed set. Can I cut down a cabinet to fit instead of using a filler?
Sometimes, and it is more work than it sounds. Cutting a framed cabinet narrower means cutting through the face frame and reassembling it, and the door and drawer front no longer suit the opening, so those have to be reordered or remade. Cutting a frameless box means recutting the top, bottom and back and losing the hardware positions. Both are jobs for someone who builds cabinets. The exception that is genuinely routine is trimming a finished end panel or a filler, which is what fillers are designed for. What happens at an inside corner?
A corner is where two runs meet and it consumes more width than the cabinet in it, because the two runs cannot both occupy the same corner space. The usual solutions are a corner cabinet with a diagonal or blind front, or a blind base where one run runs past the corner and the other dies into it with a filler between them so the doors can open past each other. That corner filler is not optional: without it the door or drawer of one run collides with the pull of the other. Do I measure the wall at the floor or at counter height?
At the height the cabinets meet the wall, and at more than one point. Base cabinets contact the wall around counter height and wall cabinets around five feet, and a wall that is bowed or out of plumb can differ by a quarter of an inch or more between those heights. Measure both ends and the middle, use the smallest figure, and remember that the baseboard has to come off before anything sits tight to the wall.
