The triangle is the oldest number in kitchen planning and the most misquoted. It was drawn for one cook in a small post-war kitchen, and it says nothing about the second person standing at the dishwasher. Measure it anyway, because a leg that is too short is as awkward as one that is too long.

What the triangle was actually for

The work triangle comes out of research into small residential kitchens done in the middle of the twentieth century, when a kitchen was a closed room, one person cooked in it, and the three things that person walked between were cold storage, water and heat. Connect those three points, measure the three sides, and the sum was meant to be short enough to save steps and long enough that the three stations each had working room. The commonly repeated band is that each leg falls somewhere between about four and nine feet and the three added together land between about thirteen and twenty-six feet.

Those numbers are a convention that has been copied forward for seventy years, not a requirement, and no building department will measure them. They are still worth checking, because they encode two real observations. A leg under about four feet means two appliances are close enough that their landing space overlaps, and a leg over about nine feet means you are walking with a hot pan. Both of those are true regardless of what year the guidance was written.

Why it describes a modern kitchen badly

The triangle assumes one cook and three destinations. A current kitchen has a dishwasher, a microwave, a coffee station, a second sink, a bin pull-out, and frequently two people using them at once. The triangle cannot see any of that. It will report a perfect 18 foot total for a layout where the dishwasher door blocks the only route to the refrigerator, because a dishwasher is not one of the three points.

The replacement most designers use is zones: a cold zone around the refrigerator, a wet zone around the sink and dishwasher, a hot zone around the range and its landing space, and a prep zone with counter run between the wet and hot. Zones handle the second cook, because two zones can be occupied simultaneously without argument as long as their standing space does not overlap. That is why this calculator reports the overlap in standing zones alongside the triangle: the triangle tells you about the walk, the zone overlap tells you about the collision.

The count matters more than the total distance when more than one person cooks. A kitchen with a 15 foot triangle and three crossings feels busier than one with a 22 foot triangle and one crossing, because the second person is standing in the path rather than beside it. The aisle number, and who sets it

Aisle width is the single dimension people ask about most and the one this page is least able to answer, because it is not a design preference in every jurisdiction. Passage widths, clearances at appliances and the space in front of them can be governed by the adopted code, by accessibility provisions where they apply, and by the local building department, and those differ between states, cities and counties. Put the width you have or the width you are planning into the field and treat the result as a description of your own layout. Then ask the building department what their adopted code requires before you commit to a wall position.

What the calculation can tell you honestly is how the width interacts with your layout. Every cross-aisle leg pays the aisle width as a straight-line penalty, so a wide aisle lengthens the triangle. That is the trade nobody mentions: widening an aisle to fit two people also makes the single-cook walk longer, and past a point the extra width stops being generosity and starts being distance.

Before any of this becomes a plan

Sink positions, gas lines and circuits are the expensive part of a kitchen layout, not the cabinets. Moving a sink means moving supply and waste, moving a range may mean moving gas, and both are licensed trades under permit in most places. Taking out a wall to open a kitchen raises the header question, and the answer to that comes from the span tables in the adopted code or from an engineer, not from a layout drawing. If the house predates the late 1970s, the flooring, the mastic under it, the joint compound and the paint may hold asbestos or lead, and demolition is what disturbs them; testing before demolition is a question to put to a qualified assessor rather than something to work out from a calculator.

Draw the layout, measure it here, then take it to the people who have to sign it off. A layout that measures well and cannot be permitted is not a layout.

Questions people ask

What is the ideal kitchen work triangle size?

There is no ideal, only a conventional band that gets repeated: each leg roughly four to nine feet, and the three legs adding to roughly thirteen to twenty-six feet. Treat that as a sanity check rather than a target to hit exactly. A 16 foot triangle in a well-zoned kitchen with one aisle crossing works better than a 19 foot triangle where every trip crosses traffic, and the total tells you nothing about which of those you have. The band is also a design convention with no regulatory force. Nobody inspects it, and a kitchen that falls outside it is not defective.

Does the work triangle still apply to an island kitchen?

Partly. If the island holds one of the three centres, usually the sink or the cooktop, the triangle still measures something real and this calculator handles it by putting that centre on the opposite run. If the island holds none of them and simply sits in the aisle, the triangle measures a straight line that you cannot walk, which is why there is a field for the island span. The classic guidance is explicit that a leg should not be interrupted by a full-height obstruction, and an island that forces a detour is functionally one even though it is waist high.

How do I plan a kitchen for two cooks?

Stop measuring the triangle and start measuring standing room. Two people can share a kitchen comfortably when their work zones do not overlap and when neither has to cross the other to reach what they need. In practice that means giving the second person a prep zone with its own counter run and its own landing space, keeping the refrigerator accessible from outside the main cooking zone so someone can fetch without entering it, and reducing the number of aisle crossings the primary cook makes. How wide should the aisle between counters be?

This page will not give you a number, because aisle and clearance dimensions in kitchens can be set by the code your jurisdiction has adopted, by accessibility requirements where they apply, and by the local building department, and they differ from place to place. What is generic is the trade-off: a narrower aisle shortens every cross-aisle leg of the triangle and makes it harder for two people to pass, and a wider one does the reverse. Measure what you have or what you are planning, put it in the field, and ask the building department what their adopted code requires before you fix the wall positions.

Should the dishwasher be beside the sink?

It almost always ends up there for a plumbing reason rather than a workflow one, since it shares the drain and supply, and running it elsewhere means running pipe. The workflow consequence is worth planning around: an open dishwasher door occupies a large piece of floor immediately in front of the sink, which is the busiest square yard in the kitchen, and it usually blocks at least one triangle leg while it is open.
