Yardage follows area and gauge together

The mistake that sends people back to the yarn shop is treating yardage as a function of size alone. It is not. Two blankets of exactly the same finished dimensions can differ by a couple of hundred yards, because the amount of yarn in a square inch of fabric is set by how many stitches are packed into that square inch and how long the loop path of each stitch is.

The model here works from the loop. A single knitted stitch consumes a length of yarn roughly proportional to its perimeter, which is its width plus its height. Stitch width is one over stitches per inch; row height is one over rows per inch. Multiply that per-stitch length by the number of stitches in the piece, which is area times stitches per inch times rows per inch, and the whole thing collapses to a clean form: yardage is proportional to area times the sum of the two gauge figures.

That collapse tells you the two things worth knowing. Working tighter at the same finished size costs you more yarn, not less, because you are putting more stitches into the same area and each one still has to be tied. And a heavier yarn at the same finished size costs you fewer yards, because the gauge figures drop, but it costs you more grams, because each yard weighs more. The calculator reports both, which is why the ball band weight is worth entering.

Where the constant came from

The proportionality constant was fitted against project totals people actually knit rather than taken from a textbook. Two independent anchors landed on the same figure. A worsted pullover at 5 stitches and 7 rows to the inch, sized to a 40 inch chest with a 24 inch body and 18 inch sleeves, comes to about 1,565 square inches of fabric and about 1,430 yards. A pair of socks at 8 stitches and 11 rows to the inch, roughly 256 square inches of fabric, comes to about 370 yards. Both fall out of the same constant of 2.75 loop-path lengths per stitch, which is why it is used here rather than a per-yarn-weight lookup table.

Treat the result as a good estimate rather than an exact count. It ignores selvedges, seams, the yarn burned in a swatch, and every tail you weave in, which is what the extra allowance field is for. It also ignores colourwork, which can double consumption because you are carrying two strands, and it ignores anything worked at a deliberately different gauge from the main fabric, such as a tight ribbed hem on an otherwise loose body.

These are working conventions, not measurements of your yarn in your hands. The ribbing figure in particular is a wide range, because 1x1 rib and a wide 4x4 rib behave very differently. If a project is mostly one textured pattern and the yardage is tight, knit a swatch, weigh it, and scale from that instead. Weighing a swatch is the only method on this page that involves no assumptions at all.

Buy the yarn once

Yarn is dyed in lots, and a lot is a batch. The colour name and the number printed beside it are two different things, and only the second one promises that two skeins came out of the same dye bath. The difference between lots is often invisible in a shop and obvious in a finished blanket, where it shows up as a band running across the work at the point you joined the new ball. There is no fix short of ripping back or alternating skeins for several inches to blur the join.

The asymmetry is the whole argument. Buying one skein more than you need costs the price of a skein. Buying one skein too few costs the project, or costs an afternoon of alternating rows to hide a join, and only if the shop still has anything at all in your lot. Round up, keep the receipt, and check the lot number on every band before you leave.

What this does not decide

Yardage says nothing about whether the fabric will be any good. A yarn worked far outside its comfortable range makes a stiff board or a limp rag at exactly the yardage predicted here. That judgement belongs to your gauge swatch, which is also where the numbers this page needs come from. Questions people ask

How many skeins do I need for a blanket?

Enter the finished dimensions and your gauge and the calculator answers it, but the shape of the answer is worth knowing in advance. A 36 by 40 inch worsted baby blanket at 4.5 stitches and 6 rows to the inch works out around 1,150 yards, which is six skeins of 220 yards with a normal allowance. A full 60 by 80 inch throw at the same gauge is nearly four times the area and lands over 3,800 yards, which is well past the point where dye lots become the main risk. The two figures that move the answer most are area and gauge, not yarn weight class, so measure a blocked swatch before you order.

Why does tighter knitting use more yarn, not less?

Because you are being asked to fill the same finished area either way. A tighter gauge means more stitches per square inch, and every one of those extra stitches is a loop of yarn that has to be formed. The loop is slightly shorter than a loose one, but there are enough more of them that the total goes up. Working the sweater in the example a half stitch per inch tighter, at 5.5 stitches and 7.7 rows rather than 5 and 7, raises the estimate from about 1,430 yards to about 1,580. This is the opposite of what people expect, and it is why a gauge that comes out tight is a yardage problem as well as a sizing problem.

Should I use the ball band gauge or my own?

Your own, from a blocked swatch, every time. The ball band gauge is a suggestion from the manufacturer about a needle size that produces a fabric they consider representative. It is not a measurement of what you will get, because tension is personal and varies by several stitches per four inches between knitters using the same needle and the same yarn. It also assumes stockinette, which may not be what you are making. The band is useful for two things: the yardage per ball and the weight per ball. Take those, and get the gauge off your own hands.

Does the calculator handle colourwork or intarsia?

No, and the gap is large enough to matter. Stranded colourwork carries a second strand across the back of every row, so a two-colour yoke consumes roughly double the yarn of a plain one over that section, split between the colours in whatever ratio the chart uses. Intarsia does not strand, so it is closer to plain fabric, but it adds tails at every colour change. For a garment with a colourwork yoke and a plain body, the practical approach is to run the body and sleeves through here as plain fabric, calculate the yoke area separately, and double it. For anything more complicated than that, swatch the actual chart and weigh it.

What is grist and why does it appear here?

Grist is yards per unit weight, and it is the only unambiguous statement of how thick a yarn is. A yarn described as worsted might run anywhere from about 80 to about 110 yards per ounce depending on the fibre, the ply and the spinning method, and two yarns at opposite ends of that band produce noticeably different fabrics at the same needle size. Weight class names like DK, worsted and aran are conventions covering a range, and different mills draw the boundaries in different places.
