Compare grist, not ball count and not the label

The instinct when substituting is to match ball for ball: the pattern says eight balls, so buy eight balls. That works only if the two yarns hold the same yardage in the same weight, and there is no reason they should. A 100 gram ball of one worsted might hold 200 yards and another 240, a twenty percent difference sitting behind identical numbers on the front of the label.

The measurement that settles it is grist, which is yards per unit weight. It is not printed on the band, but both numbers that make it are, and dividing one by the other takes a second. A yarn with more yards per ounce is finer, because you are getting more length out of the same mass of fibre. A yarn with fewer is thicker. This is a physical statement about the yarn, unlike the weight class name, which is a marketing convention with fuzzy edges.

Once you have grist for both, two things follow immediately. The ball count comes from total yardage, not from ball count: multiply the pattern balls by the pattern yards per ball to get the yardage you actually need, then divide by the substitute yards per ball and round up. And the fabric prediction comes from the grist ratio: within about ten percent the yarns behave alike, past about twenty five percent you are making a different object.

The weight the finished piece will carry

Substituting a thicker yarn at the same finished dimensions means the same fabric area holding more mass. A sweater that would have weighed 18 ounces in the original can come out at 22 in a heavier substitute, and four ounces is enough to change how a garment hangs off the shoulders, how warm it is, and whether the neckline stays where it was put.

This is the failure mode people describe as the sweater growing. It is not usually growing. It is heavier, and a heavier knitted fabric stretches further under its own weight, particularly in a yarn without much elastic recovery. Cotton, linen, silk and most plant fibres have very little recovery, so a heavy substitute in one of those is a real risk on any garment with vertical drop. Wool forgives more.

Band gauges are recommendations from the manufacturer about a needle size that shows the yarn to advantage. They are not measurements of your knitting and they are not a promise. Where the two bands disagree, the disagreement tells you the mills intended different fabrics, which is information, but the resolution is always the same: swatch the yarn you are going to buy.

What grist does not capture

Two yarns can share a grist figure and produce quite different fabrics, because thickness is not the only variable. Fibre content changes drape, warmth, stretch and how the piece behaves when wet. Ply structure changes stitch definition, so a smooth round four-ply shows cables sharply where a loosely spun single blurs them. Twist changes durability and how much the fabric biases. A woollen-spun yarn is airy and full of trapped loft while a worsted-spun yarn of identical grist is dense and smooth, and they will not look alike knitted.

None of that shows up in a calculation. What the calculation does is eliminate the substitutions that were never going to work, and tell you exactly how much of the new yarn to buy so you can go and find out about the rest. Buy one, then buy the rest

The cheapest way to test a substitution is to buy a single ball, swatch it, block it, and look at the result before ordering the other seven. The risk is that the dye lot moves in the meantime, so ask the shop whether they can hold the lot, or accept that the swatch ball may not match and plan to use it for a pocket lining. Everything after the swatch should be bought at once, in one lot, with the lot number checked on every band before you leave. Yarn is the one material in this trade where buying twice is worse than buying too much.

Questions people ask

How do I know how many balls to buy when substituting?

Work in yards, never in balls. Multiply the number of balls the pattern calls for by the yards per ball of the original yarn to get the total yardage, then divide by the yards per ball of the substitute and round up. If the pattern wants 8 balls of 220 yards, that is 1,760 yards, and a substitute holding 191 yards per ball needs 10 balls, not 8. Add a few percent on top for a swatch and for the fact that a thicker substitute worked to the same finished size tends to consume slightly more than the arithmetic suggests.

What is grist and how do I calculate it?

Grist is yards per unit weight, and it is the honest measure of how thick a yarn is. Divide the yards per ball by the weight per ball. A 100 gram ball holding 220 yards is 220 yards per 100 grams, or about 62 yards per ounce. Compare that figure between two yarns and the ratio tells you directly how much finer or thicker one is than the other. It is more informative than any weight class name because it is a measurement rather than a category, and because the categories overlap so much that two yarns in the same class can differ by a fifth.

Can I substitute a DK yarn for a worsted?

Sometimes, and the class names will not tell you whether this is one of those times. Check the grist. A heavy DK at 100 yards per ounce and a light worsted at 105 are essentially the same yarn wearing different labels, and swapping them is unremarkable. A light DK at 125 and a heavy worsted at 85 are nearly fifty percent apart, and no amount of needle adjustment makes one behave like the other. Run both bands through this page, look at the percentage, and let that decide rather than the words on the label.

Will a substitute yarn change the gauge?

Very probably, and that is a separate problem from yardage. Even a close grist match can knit up at a different gauge because of fibre, twist and how much the yarn blooms when blocked. The correct sequence is to buy one ball, swatch it in the stitch pattern the project uses, block it the way the finished piece will be blocked, and measure. Then convert the pattern stitch counts to that gauge. Buying the full quantity before swatching is how people end up with ten balls of a yarn that does not work.

Does fibre content matter as much as thickness?

For how the finished piece behaves, more. Grist predicts how much yarn a fabric of a given size takes and roughly how dense it will be. It says nothing about drape, recovery, warmth or stitch definition. Substituting cotton for wool at identical grist gives you a heavier fabric with almost no elastic recovery, which will grow under its own weight and will not spring back after blocking the way the wool version would. Substituting an airy woollen-spun yarn for a smooth worsted-spun one blurs every cable and every purl ridge. Match the grist first, then look hard at the fibre and the spin before committing.
