What a ramp is for, and what it is not for
A warm-up ramp has two jobs that get confused with each other. The first is raising tissue temperature and getting joints moving through the range the lift needs, which is largely done by the time you have completed a few light sets and does not require much load at all. The second is rehearsal: running the exact groove of the lift at a weight heavy enough to demand real bracing and real position, so that the working set is not the first time that day your body has been asked to do it.
The first job is why a ramp starts light. The second is why it has to finish heavy. A ramp that goes bar, then 40 percent, then straight to the working set has done the temperature job and skipped the rehearsal entirely, which is why that top set often feels foreign for the first two reps.
Why the last warm-up is the one that matters
Every rung on the ramp below about 70 percent is essentially free. It costs almost nothing in fatigue and it contributes almost nothing to the working set beyond warmth. The rung nearest the top is where the trade sits: heavy enough to be a genuine rehearsal, light enough that it does not eat into what you have for the set that counts.
This is the reasoning behind the default of 90 percent for a single. At 90 percent for one rep you have loaded the bar with something that feels like the real thing, unracked it, braced against it and moved it, all for the cost of a single repetition. Drop that last rung to 75 percent and the jump into the working set is large enough that the first rep becomes the rehearsal, which is a worse place to discover that your setup is off. Push it to 95 percent for a triple and it is no longer a warm-up, it is a working set you have not counted.
Rounding to what the bar can actually hold
Percentages produce numbers no plate set can build. Eighty-two percent of 235 is 192.7, and there is no arrangement of plates that makes 192.7 lb. Every load on this ramp is rounded to the nearest weight your smallest plate pair allows, because plates go on two at a time and the smallest change possible is twice the smallest plate. That is also why the ramp sometimes shows fewer sets than you asked for: when two rungs round to the same loadable weight, repeating it adds fatigue and no information, so the duplicate is dropped.

How many rungs, and when the answer changes
The number of warm-up sets scales with the working weight rather than with the exercise. A ramp to 135 has one gap to cover and needs almost nothing; a ramp to 455 has a long way to travel and taking it in four steps means each step is enormous. The rough shape most people converge on looks like this, and it is a starting point for your own numbers rather than a prescription:

Notice that the count goes up but the reps come down. Five reps at 40 percent is trivial; five reps at 90 percent is a working set. The rep column in the result descends for that reason, and if you set the last rung to something other than a single the tool will honour it.
The limits of any of this
A warm-up cannot be planned into correctness by a web page. It cannot see whether your hips move well today, whether you slept, whether last session left something sore, or whether the specific lift you are doing needs mobility work that no amount of light barbell will supply. Some people need considerably more preparation than a load ramp provides and some need considerably less, and both are normal.
It also cannot coach the lift. Technique under a light load beats load under bad technique in every case, and the ramp is worth nothing if the position it is rehearsing is wrong. Pain that is sharp, sits in a joint rather than a muscle belly, or persists for days is a different thing from training soreness and is a question for a clinician or physiotherapist, not for a calculator. Questions people ask
How long should I rest between warm-up sets?
Less than you rest between working sets, and it varies enormously by person and by lift, so no number here would be honest. What is fairly consistent is the shape: the light rungs need very little rest because they are not fatiguing, and the rung nearest the working weight needs enough that it does not carry over. People often rest too long low down, which lets the temperature effect fade, and too little at the top, which is where it actually matters. Treat the ramp as a plan for load and let the clock follow how you feel.
Do I warm up again for the second exercise?
Usually less, and sometimes not at all, but that depends on how similar the movements are. Going from a heavy squat to a leg press covers much of the same tissue and typically needs a rung or two rather than a full ramp. Going from squats to overhead press asks for a different joint at a different temperature and generally needs its own ramp, even if a short one. The general pattern is that the first heavy lift of the session gets the full ramp and later exercises get progressively less, but that is a description of what people do rather than a rule.
Should the warm-up include stretching?
This page plans loads, not mobility work, and stretching is a genuinely contested area rather than a settled one. What can be said without overreaching is that the warm-up modelled here is specifically the load ramp, and it makes no claim to be a complete preparation for any particular person or lift. If something specific does not move well, that is worth asking a coach or physiotherapist about rather than solving by adding sets.
Why did I ask for five warm-up sets and get four?
Because two of the requested rungs rounded to the same loadable weight. When the working weight is close to the bar, evenly spaced percentages land within one plate step of each other, and repeating a load adds fatigue without adding rehearsal, so the duplicate is dropped. Lowering the first percentage widens the spread, and a smaller plate pair gives finer rounding. If the ramp is only two or three sets for a light working weight, that is usually the correct answer rather than a failure.
Does the tonnage number mean anything?
Only as a reminder that the ramp is not free. It is reps times load added up across the warm-up sets, and it is there so you can see when a long ramp has quietly become a meaningful chunk of the session. Comparing it against another day, or against your working sets, tells you something about whether preparation is crowding out the work.
