Two scales measuring the same thing

Reps in reserve is the plain version: how many more repetitions could you have completed before the bar stopped moving. RPE, as it is used in lifting, is that same quantity inverted onto a ten-point scale, so that RPE 10 is nothing left and each point below it is one more rep you could have done. RPE 8 is two in reserve. RPE 6 is four. The half points exist because people are often more confident saying "one or two" than committing to either.

This is a narrower definition than the RPE used in endurance work, where the scale describes general exertion rather than proximity to failure. On a bike a hard steady effort is an RPE by feel; under a bar it is a count of repetitions you believe you had left. Mixing the two definitions is the most common source of confusion when people move between the pace zone and heart rate zone world and the barbell one.

How a rating becomes a percentage

The mapping used here rests on one assumption: a set of five reps with two left in the tank is the same effort, and roughly the same percentage of maximum, as a set of seven taken to failure. Add the reps in reserve to the reps performed and you get an effective rep count, then look that up on a table of what a set to failure at that many reps represents as a fraction of a one rep max.

Beyond twelve effective reps the curve flattens so much that a rep of error barely moves the percentage, which sounds like stability and is actually the opposite: it means the load carries almost no information about your maximum. That is why the tool refuses to produce a percentage there rather than producing a confident wrong one.

The honest part: the instrument is you

Everything above is arithmetic on a number that came out of a judgement. Research into rating accuracy finds a consistent pattern. Ratings are more accurate near failure, because the difference between one rep left and none is obvious in a way that the difference between four and five is not. They are more accurate in trained lifters than novices, who tend to underestimate how much they had left. And they are more accurate on the specific lifts a person has rated many times, because the calibration is learned rather than intuitive.

None of that makes RPE useless. It makes it a tool whose precision improves with practice and whose output should be treated as a range rather than a figure. The result above shows explicitly what one rep of misjudgement does to the estimated maximum, and for most sets it is a larger number than people expect.

The implied maximum shown here exists only as the bridge between two RPE targets; if the maximum itself is what you want, use the tool built for it.

It also does not prescribe an RPE for your training. Whether a working set should sit at 7, 8 or 9 is a programming decision that depends on the lift, the phase, how much you are doing, and how well you recover, and none of those are things a converter can see. Questions people ask

What is the difference between RPE and RIR?

Arithmetic, and nothing else, in the way both are used for lifting. Reps in reserve is a direct count of repetitions you believe you had left. RPE is ten minus that count, so two reps in reserve is RPE 8 and zero is RPE 10. Some coaches prefer RIR because it asks a concrete question, and some prefer RPE because the ten-point scale allows half points and reads more naturally as an intensity. The tool shows both because the underlying judgement is identical either way.

Is an RPE 8 always the same percentage of my max?

No, and this is the part that surprises people. RPE describes proximity to failure, not load. Five reps at RPE 8 is about 81 percent; ten reps at RPE 8 is about 74 percent; a single at RPE 8 is about 92 percent. The rating tells you how close you were to running out, and the rep count tells you where on the load curve that happened. Both are needed to arrive at a percentage, which is exactly why the tool asks for both.

How accurate is my own RPE rating likely to be?

Less accurate than you would like at first, and better with practice, which is the consistent finding across studies that have compared ratings against actual reps to failure. Novice lifters generally underestimate how many reps they had left, sometimes by several. Accuracy improves near failure, improves on familiar lifts, and improves with experience of rating itself. A practical way to calibrate is to occasionally take a set to genuine failure after predicting the rating, and see how far off you were. Doing that regularly on heavy compound lifts is its own risk and is not something this page is recommending.

Why does the tool stop working past twelve effective reps?

Because the underlying table stops being informative there. The percentage curve flattens as rep counts rise — going from twelve reps to fourteen changes the implied percentage by a couple of points, which means the load you used tells you almost nothing about your maximum, and any estimate produced from it inherits an error band wide enough to be actively misleading. Rating a heavier set gives a number worth having. The same problem, viewed as disagreement between formulas, is visible on the one rep max page.

Should I use RPE instead of percentages in my program?

That is a programming choice and this page does not have a position on it. What can be said is what each one trades. Percentages are fixed in advance and ignore the day you are actually having, which is either discipline or stubbornness depending on the day. RPE adjusts to the day and is only as good as your rating, which is either responsiveness or an excuse depending on the lifter. Many programs use both, anchoring a percentage range and then capping it with an RPE. Anything more specific than that is a conversation with a coach who can see you lift.
