What the fitting count actually is

Every tap needs a spout and a drop. Every tap except the last one on a line joins the lateral through a tee, and the last one gets an end fitting instead — so tees come to taps minus laterals, and end fittings come to one per lateral. Each lateral meets the mainline at a saddle or take-off, which is another one per lateral. That is the whole arithmetic, and it is worth writing out because the box of fittings is the thing that runs short on a Saturday when the supplier is two hours away and shut.

Three hundred taps at five to a lateral gives sixty laterals: three hundred spouts, two hundred and forty tees, sixty end fittings and sixty saddles. Six hundred and sixty pieces. Buy the tees loose and count them.

Measured footage is not the footage you buy

Line sags between supports, goes around trees rather than through them, drops into a hollow and climbs back out, and gets cut short once per roll by someone in a hurry. The allowance for that is not a rounding error. Twelve percent is a reasonable starting figure in ordinary woods and a low one on broken ground with ledge and blowdown.

The drop line is the piece people forget entirely. Thirty inches at each of three hundred taps is seven hundred and fifty feet before slack — a roll and a half on its own, buried inside a number that looks like it is about laterals.

Taps per lateral is a design question, not a preference

How many taps you can hang on one line depends on the tubing diameter, the slope it runs on, and whether the system is on gravity or under vacuum. A line that works beautifully falling steeply to a mainline behaves very differently across a flat bench. This calculator takes the number you give it and does the counting; it does not know your woods and will not pretend to.

Fewer taps per lateral means more saddles and more mainline connections but shorter walks when something goes wrong. More taps per lateral is cheaper in fittings and slower to diagnose. Which side of that trade is right depends on how much of your season is spent chasing leaks, and the answer usually changes after the first bad year.

Questions people ask

How many taps should go on one lateral?

It depends on tubing diameter, the slope the line runs on, and whether you are on gravity or vacuum, and those three between them move the sensible answer over a wide range. Rather than repeat a figure that would be wrong for half the people reading it, this page takes yours as an input. Your tubing supplier publishes guidance for their product, and your state maple producers association will have advice tuned to the terrain around you. Both are better sources than a general web page.

Why does the drop line matter so much?

Because it is multiplied by every tap rather than by every lateral. Three hundred taps with thirty-inch drops is seven hundred and fifty feet of tubing, which is more than most people expect and enough to change how many rolls you order. It is also the piece that gets replaced most often, since it is the one handled at every tapping and pulling.

Is twelve percent enough slack?

In easy woods with straight runs, yes. On broken ground, around ledge, through blowdown or where the line has to detour around wet ground, it is not, and twenty percent would not be excessive. The cheap way to find out is to lay out one representative section on the ground before ordering the rest, measure what it actually took, and use your own percentage from then on. Running short mid-install costs a day; running long costs a partial roll.

Does this tell me what size tubing to use?

No, and it should not. Tubing and mainline sizing depends on tap counts, slope, run length and whether the system is under vacuum, and getting it wrong shows up as sap that will not move rather than as anything obvious on installation day. That is a design question for your equipment supplier, who knows their product, or for someone locally who has laid out bushes on ground like yours.

Can I reuse last year tubing and fittings?

People do, and how long lines last before they are more trouble than they are worth is a judgement rather than a rule — it depends on the product, the sun exposure and how hard the winters are on it. What is worth counting is that a system that leaks under vacuum, or that carries anything you would rather not have in the tank, costs you far more than the tubing did. Whether a given line is still fit for use is a question about the sap you intend to sell, which puts it in front of your state agriculture department rather than a footage calculator.
