Adhesive is estimated from the joists, not the floor
Every subfloor materials list gets the sheets right and the adhesive wrong, because people estimate glue by area when it is actually applied along lines. A bead runs down the top of each joist under each panel, so the bead length is the total linear feet of joist beneath the floor. For a 24 by 14 foot room on 16 inch centres that is 336 square feet divided by 1.333 feet, or about 252 linear feet of bead, which at roughly 30 feet per tube is nine tubes.
Nine tubes is not what most people buy. They buy three, run out in the middle of the second row, and finish the floor dry, which is exactly where the squeaks come from later. The coverage per tube is an input on this page rather than a constant because it depends heavily on how you cut the nozzle. A quarter inch bead from a 10 ounce tube runs somewhere around 28 to 32 feet; open the nozzle to a half inch and you halve that.
Counting fasteners honestly
The rule most people repeat is six inches on the edges and twelve in the field. Worked through for a 4 by 8 sheet on 16 inch centres, that is 48 fasteners around the perimeter and 18 down the two interior joist lines, so 66 per sheet. Round numbers like fifty per sheet, which get used a lot, are twenty five percent light.

Screws pull the panel down against the adhesive and hold it there while the adhesive cures, which is why they beat nails for this even though nails go in faster. Ring shank nails are the traditional alternative and hold better than smooth shank, but neither draws the panel tight the way a screw does.
Tongue and groove, gaps and the direction of the panels
Subfloor panels run with their long dimension across the joists, so a 4 by 8 sheet on 16 inch centres bridges six joist spaces. Panel ends must land on a joist, and the joints in adjacent rows are staggered so that no continuous seam runs the length of the floor. That stagger is what makes the offcut from the end of one row become the start of the next, and it is why the waste allowance on a subfloor is lower than it is for finish materials.
Leave the manufacturer's specified gap at panel ends and at the walls. Wood panels take on moisture and grow, and a floor laid tight has nowhere to go but up, which shows as a ridge under whatever you install on top. Tongue and groove edges self-space along the long side; the ends are where the gap has to be deliberate.
Before you pull up the old floor
If the house was built before the late 1970s, the old flooring, its mastic adhesive and any layers underneath may contain asbestos, and painted surfaces around them may contain lead. Sheet vinyl and its backing, nine inch and twelve inch floor tile, and the black cutback adhesive under them are all common places for it. Whether it is safe to disturb is a testing question, answered by a lab on a sample, and not something to judge from the look of the material. Do not sand, grind or dry scrape it while you find out, and if it is present, removal is specialist work with its own rules. This page is about new material going down, not about what comes up first.

Questions people ask
How many tubes of construction adhesive does a subfloor need?
Take the floor area in square feet and divide by the joist spacing in feet to get the bead length, then divide by the coverage of your tube. On 16 inch centres that works out to roughly 0.75 linear feet of bead per square foot of floor, so a 300 square foot room needs around 225 feet of bead, which is seven or eight tubes at 30 feet each. On 24 inch centres it drops to half a foot of bead per square foot. The two things that change the answer are how wide you cut the nozzle and whether you are running a bead on the panel ends and edges as well as the joists, which some people do and which adds roughly another quarter.
Screws or ring shank nails for subfloor?
Screws, if you are gluing, because a screw draws the panel down onto the adhesive and holds it there while it cures. That contact is what makes the glue work. Ring shank nails hold well against withdrawal once they are in but they do not pull a slightly bowed panel down, and a panel that bridges over the adhesive on one joist is a squeak waiting to happen. Nails are faster with a gun and are perfectly acceptable where speed matters and the panel is flat. What is not acceptable is smooth shank nails, which back out as the framing dries and shrinks.
What thickness of subfloor do I need?
That depends on the joist spacing and the load, and it is a structural question this calculator does not answer. The general relationship is that wider joist spacing needs a thicker or stiffer panel, and that panels carry a span rating stamped on them that tells you what spacing they are rated for. What is worth knowing as a homeowner is that thickness alone does not settle it: panel grade, whether the edges are tongue and groove, and the joist depth and species all matter, and a floor that meets the minimum can still feel bouncy underfoot. If you are changing spans, adding a heavy finish like stone tile, or unsure, get the assembly specified by someone who can look at the framing.
Why is my waste allowance higher than 10 percent?
Because the room dimensions are not multiples of four feet and the offcuts do not land anywhere useful. A room that is exactly 24 by 16 wastes essentially nothing: the panels tile the floor perfectly. A room 23 feet 7 inches by 14 feet 3 inches has a rip on two sides and the strips you cut off are the wrong width to use elsewhere. Draw the layout before ordering if the room is odd. Ten percent is a reasonable default for a rectangular room; a floor broken up by a stair opening, a chimney chase or a bay is easily double that.
Does this cover an underlayment layer over the subfloor?
No. This calculates the structural subfloor, the panel that spans the joists. An underlayment is a thin sheet laid on top of it to give a smooth substrate for a finish, and it is a separate material with its own thickness, fastener pattern and rules, usually fastened much more densely and never glued to the subfloor in the same way. Foam underlayment for a floating floor is different again and is handled in the flooring calculator.
