Where the line is between cleaning and remediation
There is a rough size threshold that professionals and public-health guidance both use, and it is worth knowing before you start scrubbing. Under about 10 square feet — a patch you could cover with a bath towel — on a hard, non-porous surface, with a moisture source you have already identified, is an afternoon with a bucket. Past that, or in any of the situations below, the job involves containment, negative air pressure and material disposal, and doing it badly spreads spores through the rest of the house.

Nobody can tell you a species from a photograph, and identifying it changes nothing about the response. Testing is worth paying for in two cases: a dispute with a landlord or insurer where you need documentation, and a health situation where a physician has asked for it. The moisture source, which is the whole repair
Mold needs water, a surface, and a temperature people find comfortable. You control one of those. Everything below is aimed at getting indoor relative humidity into the 30 to 50 percent range and keeping liquid water off surfaces.

If you rent
In most states a landlord owes a habitable unit, and persistent moisture from a building defect — a roof leak, failed flashing, a supply line weeping inside a wall, an exhaust fan that was never ducted out — falls on the owner. Recurring mold from a tenant never running the bathroom fan is a harder argument to win. The practical advice does not depend on which state you are in: photograph the growth with a date, photograph the moisture you think is causing it, put the request in writing rather than by phone, and keep the reply. How much mold is too much to clean myself?
The commonly used threshold is about 10 square feet of contiguous growth — roughly a 3 by 3 foot patch. Below that, on a hard surface, with clean water as the source, it is a cleaning job. Above that, or anywhere in the HVAC system, or after any contact with sewage or flood water, it belongs to a remediation contractor who can set up containment. Size is not the only test: if you have asthma, a respiratory condition, or a suppressed immune system, hand the job off regardless of how small the patch is.
Does bleach kill mold?
On glass, tile, fiberglass and other non-porous surfaces, diluted bleach will kill surface growth and take the stain out. On porous material it largely does not work, because the active chlorine stays on the surface while the water in the solution soaks into the wood or drywall and feeds what is living inside. For those materials, physical removal — scrubbing with detergent, or cutting the material out — is what actually solves it. Use 1 cup of bleach per gallon of cool water, never straight from the jug, and never in the same session as any ammonia or acid product.
Why does mold keep coming back in the same spot?
Because that spot is still getting wet. Mold is the visible end of a moisture problem, and cleaning treats the symptom. The recurring locations tell you what to look for: the same corner of an exterior wall every winter is condensation on a cold, poorly insulated surface; a ceiling stain that grows after rain is roof or flashing; a spreading patch at the base of a wall is groundwater or a leaking supply line. Get a hygrometer, aim for 30 to 50 percent indoor humidity, and find the water. Nothing you spray will outlast the leak.
Do I need mold testing?
Usually not. A lab result does not change the cleanup: the response to visible growth is the same whatever it turns out to be. Testing earns its cost in two situations — when you are building a record for a landlord dispute or an insurance claim, and when a doctor treating a specific health problem has asked for it. Is black mold especially dangerous?
The term gets used loosely for anything dark, and several common molds are dark. The honest position is that indoor mold of any color is worth removing, that reactions vary enormously between people, and that nobody can grade the hazard by eye or by photograph.
