Fence area is comparable to court area, and that surprises people
A 30 by 60 pickleball pad is 1,800 square feet of surface. Fence it all round at ten feet high and the fabric is 180 feet of run times ten, which is also 1,800 square feet. The fence is not a trim item bolted on at the end of the job; it is a second surface of similar size, and on a lot of quotes it lands in the same order of magnitude as the pad itself. Working the area out before you get the quote is the cheapest way to avoid being surprised by it.
Height drives that number linearly and it drives the post specification more than linearly, because a taller fence catches more wind over a longer lever arm. Going from eight feet to twelve is not a fifty percent increase in the job — the fabric goes up fifty percent, but the posts get heavier, the footings get deeper and the spacing usually gets tighter at the same time.
Counting posts without getting it wrong
The count depends on whether the run closes on itself. A closed rectangle has as many posts as it has spans, because the last span comes back to the first post. An open run has one more post than it has spans, because both ends need terminating. This calculator counts spans side by side and adds terminal posts only for the runs that actually end somewhere, which is why the four-sided figure looks one short if you count the sides individually.
Then gates. Every gate opening takes two posts of its own, they are heavier than line posts because they carry a swinging load, and the opening comes out of the fabric run. A four-foot gate is fine for people. If a mower, a barrow of infill or a pallet has to get in, measure the widest thing that will ever need to and add a foot, because the alternative is lifting things over a ten-foot fence for the life of the court.

Where the ball goes, and what a fence is actually for
A court fence has two jobs and they want different things. Containing balls is about height at the ends, because that is where balls leave at speed and at an angle. Keeping people and animals out is about the whole perimeter at a modest height. Many home courts are built with a tall fence at both ends and a lower one, or nothing, along the sides, and that is a sensible response to the physics rather than a compromise.
Where a fence alone is not tall enough, netting above it adds height cheaply in material terms. It is not cheap structurally. A net catches wind over its whole area and delivers that load to the top of the posts, where it has the most leverage, and a ball hitting a net is a shock load rather than a steady one. Posts and footings sized for chain link are not automatically adequate with several feet of netting above them. That is a question for whoever specifies the posts. This page will tell you the area of net; it will not tell you what will hold it up.
The bottom, the gate and the things that annoy people later
Balls escape under a fence more often than over it. A bottom tension wire pulled tight along the base of the fabric is what stops that, and it costs almost nothing compared with the aggravation it prevents. On a court where the fabric meets a slab edge, the gap under the fabric is the detail to get right, because a two-inch gap will pass a pickleball and every ball that passes through it goes into whatever is on the other side.
Two things to settle before ordering material. First, footing depth is a local matter — it depends on frost depth and on the post height, and a ten-foot fence post is not a garden fence post. Second, and more likely to cause trouble, a court fence and court lighting are the two elements that most often bring a neighbour or a local authority into the project. How tall should a court fence be?
It depends on the sport, what is behind the court and what is permitted where you live, and the last of those is the one that can override the other two. In terms of physics rather than rules: the ends need more height than the sides because that is where balls leave under power, and a fence that stops a pickleball at the ends does not need to be the same height along the sides where balls arrive slowly and sideways. Many home courts run tall at the ends and low or open along the sides. Check what your local rules allow before you decide, because fence height is one of the most commonly regulated elements of a court.
How many posts do I need for a court fence?
For a closed rectangle, count the spans on each side by dividing the side length by the post spacing and rounding up, then add them together — the post count equals the span count because the loop closes. For a run with open ends, add one post per end. Then add two posts for every gate. A 30 by 60 pad at ten foot spacing works out at 18 posts, plus two more for a single gate. Corners and gate posts are heavier sections than line posts because they resist the pull of the fabric rather than just carrying it.
Do I need netting above the fence?
Only where the fence alone does not stop the ball and there is something behind it that matters. Netting is a cheap way to add height in material terms and it is not cheap structurally. It catches wind over its whole area, it delivers that load to the very top of the posts where the leverage is worst, and ball impacts arrive as shock loads. Adding netting to a fence designed for chain link alone can overload posts and footings. Get the post specification from someone competent if you are adding significant net height, and do not treat the material list here as a design.
Why is a bottom tension wire worth bothering with?
Because most balls that escape a court go underneath the fabric rather than over the top. Chain link left unsupported at the bottom lifts, and a two-inch gap is more than enough for a pickleball, a tennis ball or a basketball rolling at speed. A tension wire pulled tight along the base and tied to the fabric closes that gap for the cost of a coil of wire and an afternoon. On a slab-edge court it also stops the fabric being kicked outward every time somebody runs into it.
How deep do the post holes need to be?
That is a local question and this page will not answer it. Depth depends on frost depth where you are, on the soil, and on the height and wind area of the fence, and a ten-foot court fence post carries loads a four-foot garden fence never sees. Get the requirement locally, then use the hole diameter and depth fields here to work out the concrete.
