The playing area is not the thing you build

Every sport publishes a playing area, and every one of those figures describes lines on a surface rather than the surface itself. A pickleball court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long between the outside edges of the lines. Nobody plays inside a 20 by 44 box, because a ball that lands an inch inside the sideline has to be reached, returned and followed through on, and the player doing that needs somewhere to put their feet. The space outside the lines is the run-off, and it is a real part of the build. It gets the same base, the same slab and the same surfacing as the part with lines on it.

The arithmetic is unforgiving. Pickleball at 20 by 44 is 880 square feet of playing area. Add five feet of side run-off and eight feet at each end and the pad becomes 30 by 60, which is 1,800 square feet. You have not made the court bigger. You have doubled the concrete, the base stone, the excavation and the surfacing, and every one of those is priced by the square foot. This is why so many people arrive at a court project convinced it will fit in a corner of the yard and leave having discovered it will not.

Why pickleball happens in backyards and tennis does not

A doubles tennis court is 36 by 78 feet of playing area, and the run-off convention around it is generous — commonly around 21 feet behind each baseline and 12 feet outside each sideline, which produces a pad near 60 by 120. That is 7,200 square feet, close to a sixth of an acre of pavement, before you have priced a fence or a net post. Pickleball at 30 by 60 is a quarter of that. The gap between those two numbers is the whole reason pickleball courts appear in back gardens and tennis courts appear at clubs, and it is also why existing tennis courts get converted: a tennis pad will hold four pickleball courts, or two with civilised spacing, on concrete somebody else already paid for.

Basketball sits between them and is the most elastic of the lot, because a half court has no fixed backyard size. High school half court is 50 by 42, but a 30 by 30 pad with a hoop at one end is a genuinely useful court, and a 20 by 25 pad next to a driveway is where a lot of people actually shoot. Unlike a net sport, basketball degrades gracefully when you shrink it. That makes it the sport to pick if the yard is deciding for you.

Squaring the rectangle before anything sets

A rectangle is square when its diagonals are equal. That is the whole method, and it is better than any single measurement because it self-checks. For a rectangle with sides a and b, each diagonal measures the square root of a squared plus b squared. A 30 by 60 pad has a diagonal of the square root of 900 plus 3,600, which is the square root of 4,500, or 67.082 feet — 67 feet and 1 inch, near enough.

The mistake is measuring one diagonal, finding it correct, and stopping. A parallelogram that has been pushed out of square has one diagonal too long and the other too short by a similar amount. Checking only one tells you nothing, because you could have hit the target length with a shape that is not a rectangle at all. Measure both. If they differ, the corner to move is at the end of the long diagonal, and moving it about half the difference will usually bring both into agreement in one adjustment. Orientation, and the one free decision

If the pad has any freedom in how it sits, run the long axis roughly north to south. A court running east to west puts the low morning and evening sun straight down the length of play, into the eyes of whoever is facing it, for a large part of every usable day. It cannot be fixed afterwards without moving the pad. It costs nothing to get right at the layout stage and it is the difference between a court that gets used in the evening and one that does not.

Slope is the other thing decided before the pour. A court needs to shed water, and the drainage plane on a sport surface runs side to side or end to end in one direction rather than crowning from the middle, because a crown produces a ridge across the middle of play. Whatever fall you use has to be consistent, and it has to send water somewhere that is not the neighbour's yard or your own foundation. What this calculator deliberately does not decide

It gives you a rectangle and a diagonal. It does not tell you whether you are allowed to build it. A paved area of this size frequently interacts with local rules on impervious surface, setbacks from property lines, stormwater management and accessory structures, and a court fence and court lighting are the two elements most likely to produce a conversation with the people next door and with whoever reviews it. Those rules are entirely local and change from one jurisdiction to the next, so nothing here should be read as saying what you may do. Ask the authority that would issue the permit before you order stone.

Neither does it decide the build-up under the surface. How much space do I actually need for a backyard pickleball court?

Measure the existing pad first rather than assuming it is a standard size, since older courts vary and many have had run-off shaved off by later fencing.

Why do both diagonals have to match?

Because one diagonal alone does not prove a rectangle. A four-sided shape with all four sides at the correct lengths can still be pushed over into a parallelogram, and in that shape one diagonal grows while the other shrinks. If you measure only the long one and it happens to read the number you wanted, you have proved nothing about the shape. Measuring both catches it immediately: equal diagonals plus correct side lengths can only be a rectangle. On a court it matters more than on a patio, because the lines are painted parallel to the edges and a court that is a degree out of square looks wrong from the moment the first line goes down.

How much run-off can I give up before it stops being playable?

There is no single answer and it depends on the sport and how hard people play. What is worth understanding is what each direction costs you. Losing end run-off changes the game, because deep shots become unplayable and the court starts rewarding a different kind of shot than it should. Losing side run-off is more about safety than play, since the wide ball is chased at speed toward whatever bounds the court. If a fence or a wall sits at the edge of the run-off, that surface is what a player will meet. Many home courts run tight on one side deliberately and keep the ends generous, and that is usually the better trade.

Does the calculator include the fence and net posts in the pad?

No. It gives you the paved rectangle. Fence posts are normally set outside the pad or through it in sleeves, and net posts for tennis, pickleball and volleyball sit outside the sidelines by a specified distance that depends on the sport and the post system. Both need footings that go below the base, which means their positions have to be known before the base is compacted rather than after.
