What a rod rating is actually claiming
Two ranges are usually printed above the handle. The line rating gives the breaking strains the blank was designed to work with, and the lure rating gives the weights it was designed to cast. Neither is a safety limit and neither is a legal statement. They describe the band within which the blank bends the way its designer intended: enough to absorb a surge, not so much that it collapses, and enough to load on the casting stroke without overloading.
The consequences of leaving each band are different, and that asymmetry is the most useful thing on this page. Line heavier than the rating means the rod, not the line, becomes the part that gives up first. On a snag, or on a hard lift, you are betting the blank against a line that will not break to save it, and blanks broken that way are broken high, near the tip, where the bend runs out of curve. Line lighter than the rating means the rod barely flexes under a load the line cannot take, so the line does all the shock absorbing and parts on a headshake that a properly matched blank would have swallowed.
The lure rating is a casting rating
Overloading a blank on the cast is the most common way a rod is broken, and it happens on the stroke rather than under a fish, because the acceleration a casting stroke applies to a heavy lure is far greater than a fish ever applies. That is why the lure rating is worth respecting even by people who cheerfully ignore the line rating.
Going under the rating is not dangerous, only disappointing. A blank that never loads does not store energy, so the cast is short and the tip tells you nothing about what the lure is doing. The rig weight to enter is the whole thing that leaves the tip: lure, sinker, bait, swivel and any hardware, not the printed weight of the lure alone. A quarter ounce jig with a sinker and a chunk of bait is not a quarter ounce.

The reel check works from a fraction you choose rather than a fraction this page prescribes. Enter what you want to be able to reach as a share of the line rating and the tool says whether the reel can get there. A reel whose maximum is well above that is fine, since a drag range that extends past what you need is not a fault. A reel that cannot reach it means either the reel is small for the line or the line is heavier than the reel was designed around, and either way the line you fitted is not usable at the setting you had in mind.
When the verdict is wrong
Plenty of good outfits fail this check on purpose. Braid throws the line rating comparison out entirely, because a rod rated for 8 to 17 pound monofilament handles braid of a similar diameter perfectly well even though that braid is rated at 30 pounds, and everyone fishing braid on a rod rated in mono is technically over the line rating. The tool has no way to know which material you meant, so it compares the numbers you typed. If the diameters match, the mismatch it reports is a bookkeeping artefact rather than a real problem, though it is still true that the rod has become the weak link.
Deliberate mismatches also exist. Fishing lighter line than the rating for finesse presentation, or heavier line around structure where you intend to stop a fish rather than fight it, are both considered choices by people who know exactly what they are trading. The tool flags them because they are worth noticing, not because they are errors.

Questions people ask
My braid is rated far above the rod. Is that a real problem?
It is a real change, and whether it is a problem depends on what you do with it. A rod rated for 8 to 17 pound monofilament is being asked to handle a blank-bending load somewhere in that range, and braid of similar diameter to 12 pound mono puts similar loads into the blank in normal fishing even though it is rated at 30 pounds. The difference appears at the extremes: on a snag or a hard lift, the braid does not break, so the rod is the part that has to give. The calculator compares the numbers you typed and cannot tell braid from mono, so read the flag as a note that the rod is now the weak link rather than as an instruction to change the line.
What happens if the lure is heavier than the rod rating?
The blank overloads on the casting stroke, which is a far more violent event than anything a fish does. A casting stroke accelerates the lure hard and the load peaks at the moment of the stop, concentrated in whichever section of the blank is bending most. Rods broken this way usually break in the upper third. A little over the rating on a slow, lobbing cast is survivable and widely done. Well over the rating with a full-power stroke is how rods snap, and the failure is sudden with no warning bend to tell you it is coming.
Does a longer rod protect the line?
It changes where the load goes rather than reducing it. A longer blank has more length to bend through, so it absorbs a surge over a longer travel and the peak tension the line sees is lower for the same movement of the fish. That is genuine protection. What a long rod also does is give the fish more leverage against you, so lifting power drops, which is why short heavy rods exist for pulling fish out of structure and long rods exist for casting distance and cushioning light line. The tool comments on length but does not score it, because the trade is a preference rather than a mismatch.
Everything is in range but the outfit still feels wrong. Why?
Ratings are ranges, and being inside two ranges at once says nothing about where in them you are sitting. A rod at the top of its lure rating and the bottom of its line rating is a legal combination that fishes like neither thing. Balance in the physical sense, which is where the outfit sits in your hand with the reel mounted, is also not modelled here at all, and a heavy reel on a light rod feels tip-light and tiring in a way no rating catches. Should the reel maximum drag be higher than the line rating?
It commonly is on larger reels, and that is not a fault. A drag with range beyond what a particular line can use simply means the reel is capable of being fished with heavier line than you have on it now. The risk it introduces is one of habit rather than design: a drag that can be wound past the breaking point of the line will be, by somebody, at some point, usually while trying to stop a fish.
