Why the same walk changes so much across a year

The time figure here starts from a size band, because a medium dog covers ground at roughly 2.7 mph on a loose lead and a toy breed at nearer 1.8, and then everything else scales it. Age band and conditioning move it in the direction you would expect. Weather moves it much further than most people allow for, and that is the part worth understanding.

Above roughly 80 F the calculator cuts the outing hard, and above 92 F it cuts it to a token walk. That is not caution for its own sake. A person walking in heat is losing heat over their whole skin surface continuously. A dog is moving air across a wet tongue and the roof of its mouth, and when the air is already warm and humid, that exchange stops working. Humidity is folded in here for exactly that reason: 88 F at 30 percent humidity and 88 F at 80 percent are different problems for the animal even though the thermometer reads the same.

The pavement number, and what it is worth

The surface temperature shown is an estimate built from the air temperature plus an uplift for sun exposure, scaled by how much heat the surface holds. Dark asphalt in full midday sun commonly runs 40 to 60 F above air temperature. Concrete runs cooler because it is lighter. Grass and shaded dirt barely move at all.

Treat every one of those as an order of magnitude rather than a reading. Surface temperature depends on the colour of the asphalt, how long the sun has been on it, whether there was a breeze, and whether it rained an hour ago. The hand test is what actually decides it: press the back of your hand flat against the surface and hold it for five seconds. If you pull away, the walk goes on grass.

Splitting the day up

Two shorter outings almost always beat one long one, and the calculator treats them that way by giving you a per-outing figure and then multiplying. On a hot day the split matters more than the total, because the risk is not the accumulated distance but the continuous stretch of exposure. Two fifteen minute walks at dawn and after sunset are a different proposition from one thirty minute walk at two in the afternoon, and only one of them appears anywhere in the weather forecast as a problem.

The other thing a split buys you is that a dog which is going to struggle usually shows it early. A short outing gets you back to the door before that matters.

Where this stops

This page does arithmetic on size, age band, conditioning and weather. It has no view on whether your dog should be walking at all, how much exercise a growing dog of a particular breed should get, or what to do about a dog that used to manage the route and now does not. How long should I walk my dog each day?

There is no single correct figure, and anyone giving you one without knowing the dog is guessing. What this page gives you is a planning number built from size, age band, conditioning and the weather on the day, which is enough to shape a routine and to notice when the weather has changed the answer. It is not a health recommendation. Breed, joint condition, weight, heart and airway all change what is appropriate, and none of them are inputs here. If your dog has any condition at all, the exercise question belongs with your veterinarian and their answer overrides this one.

How hot is too hot to walk a dog on pavement?

The air temperature is the wrong thing to watch. Dark asphalt in full sun commonly sits 40 to 60 F above the air, so a pleasant 80 F afternoon can put 125 F or more under the paws, which is enough to burn pads. The practical check costs five seconds: press the back of your hand flat on the surface and hold it. If you have to lift it, the walk moves to grass, to the shade, or to after dark. This page estimates that surface temperature for you, but the estimate is a prompt to check rather than a substitute for checking.

Why does the calculator cut the walk so much for flat-faced breeds?

Because panting is how a dog sheds heat and a short muzzle moves much less air per breath than a long one does. Brachycephalic breeds like pugs, bulldogs and boxers start from a smaller cooling capacity, so a warm day uses up their margin faster. The reduction above 75 F reflects that. It is a blunt adjustment and it is deliberately conservative. If you have one of these breeds, treat the resulting number as an upper bound and pay more attention to the dog than to the figure.

Does the distance figure account for sniffing and stopping?

The pace figures used here are loose-lead walking speeds rather than brisk marching speeds, so they already assume a dog that stops, investigates and changes speed. That is why a medium dog is set at about 2.7 mph rather than the 3.5 mph a person walks alone. If your dog genuinely does a straight-line march, the real distance will come out higher than shown. If your walks are mostly a slow tour of every interesting smell in the neighbourhood, it will come out lower, and the time figure is the one that matters anyway.

What about walking in cold weather rather than heat?

The calculator reduces the outing below freezing and reduces it further for small and toy dogs, who have far more surface area relative to their body mass and lose heat quickly. Below about 10 F the reduction is severe. Cold has different failure modes from heat: ice melt chemicals on sidewalks, ice packing between the toes, and wet coats in wind. None of those are modelled here, and none of them are things a number can decide for you. Watch the dog, keep the outing short, and get the paws clean and dry afterwards.
