Where the times seven rule came from and why it fails
The seven-to-one figure appears to be a rounding of two averages that were never meant to be divided into each other: a human lifespan of about seventy and a dog lifespan of about ten. It produces a single straight line, and dog ageing is not a straight line. A dog reaches full skeletal size and sexual maturity inside twelve months. A human takes fifteen or sixteen years to reach the same point. So the first year alone is worth roughly fifteen human years, the second about nine more, and everything after that is far slower than seven.
Run the rule against its own logic and it breaks immediately. A one-year-old dog would be seven, an age at which a human cannot reproduce and has years of growth left. A fifteen-year-old dog would be 105, which is far past what the rule implies about typical lifespan. The line is wrong at both ends and only passes near the truth somewhere in the middle.

The default model here is the staged, size-adjusted table of the kind the American Veterinary Medical Association and most veterinary practices publish. It works in three steps: fifteen human years for the first dog year, nine more for the second, and then a fixed number of human years per calendar year that depends on adult body size — four for small, five for medium, six for large, seven for giant. Large and giant breeds pick up an extra increment after five years, because that is where their ageing visibly diverges from small breeds.

The size split is the part that carries the most weight. A ten-year-old Labrador and a ten-year-old Chihuahua are separated by roughly twenty human years on this table, which is why one is having twice-yearly senior bloodwork while the other is still being treated as a middle-aged adult.
The 2020 epigenetic formula, shown alongside
A 2020 study out of UC San Diego measured DNA methylation — chemical marks on the genome that accumulate with age — in dogs and humans and fitted a logarithmic curve between the two: human equivalent equals 16 times the natural log of the dog age, plus 31. It is shown on this page next to the staged figure because the two disagree in an informative way. The formula puts a one-year-old at 31 and an eight-year-old at about 64, so it ages young dogs faster and old dogs slower than the table does.
Its limits are worth stating plainly. The cohort was Labrador Retrievers, one breed of one size, so the formula has no size term at all and cannot say anything about the Chihuahua-versus-Great-Dane gap that dominates real ageing. It is also undefined below one year, where the logarithm collapses. It is a genuine biological measurement rather than a convention, but it is a measurement of one breed, and the staged table remains what practices actually hang on the wall.
Neither model tells you about this dog
Both are population averages, and an individual animal sits somewhere in a wide distribution around them. Body condition, dental disease, whether the dog was neutered and when, breed-specific conditions, and plain genetics all move a real dog off the curve by years in either direction. A lean, well-conditioned nine-year-old Labrador can be functionally younger than an overweight seven-year-old of the same breed. The number this page produces is a translation for conversation, not a clinical assessment, and it is not a substitute for an exam by someone who can put hands on the animal.

My dog is a mixed breed. Which size do I pick?
Use adult body weight, not the breeds you think are in the mix. Under 20 lb is small, 21 to 50 lb is medium, 51 to 90 lb is large, and over 90 lb is giant. Weight is what actually correlates with the ageing rate in the data — the mechanism is thought to involve growth rate and cell division, so a 60 lb mixed breed ages like a 60 lb purebred regardless of what went into it. If the dog is still growing, use the projected adult weight your veterinarian gives you rather than the current one.
We adopted and nobody knows the age. How is it estimated?
Veterinarians estimate from teeth first. Permanent teeth are all in by about six or seven months, incisors are clean and white through the first year or two, tartar and visible wear appear from roughly three to five years, and by seven or eight there is usually noticeable wear along with a bluish haze in the lens called nuclear sclerosis. Greying around the muzzle is unreliable because some dogs grey at two. Expect an estimate to carry roughly two years of uncertainty in either direction, and more in a dog whose dental history is unknown.
Why do small dogs live longer than large ones?
It is the reverse of the pattern across species, where bigger animals generally live longer, and it is still not fully explained. The leading account is that large breeds have been selected for fast growth, which means more cell division early in life, higher levels of growth factors such as IGF-1, and more accumulated damage per calendar year. Large breeds also carry a higher incidence of certain cancers and of joint and heart disease. Whatever the mechanism, the size effect is consistent enough in lifespan data that any age conversion which ignores it is missing the largest single variable.
Is a seven-year-old dog automatically a senior?
Seven is a convention rather than a biological threshold, and it comes from averaging across sizes. On the size-adjusted view a giant breed is senior around five, a large breed around six, a medium breed around eight, and a small breed around ten. What the label is actually for is changing the monitoring schedule — moving from annual to twice-yearly exams, adding blood and urine panels, and taking blood pressure. It is a prompt to look more often, not a statement that the dog has become frail.
