Interior surface is roughly twice the water surface
The pool you look at is a rectangle of water. The pool a plasterer quotes is a box with the lid off, and the walls are most of the difference. On a 16 by 32 pool sloping from 3.5 to 8 feet, the calculator gives:

Two things stand out. The deep end wall alone is a quarter of the area of the entire water surface, from a wall eight feet high and sixteen feet wide that nobody thinks about. And the ratio is not a constant — a shallow play pool with a flat four foot floor comes out nearer 1.6, while a diving pool with a twelve foot hopper goes past 2.3. That is why square footage quotes never scale with the size of the water.
The floor is longer than the pool
A sloping floor is a hypotenuse. On the defaults the slope runs 10 feet of plan length while dropping 4.5 feet, so the actual surface being finished is:
√(10² + 4.5²) = 10.97 ft
Ten per cent more than the plan says, on that section. It sounds trivial and on a gentle slope it is, but a steep hopper transition changes it quickly: a floor dropping 6 feet over 8 feet of plan is 10 feet of slant, a full 25 per cent more surface. Hand take-offs miss this constantly because plan dimensions are what is on the drawing.
Waterline tile is a linear item pretending to be an area
The tile band under the coping is perimeter times band height, which for a 96 foot perimeter and a 6 inch band is 48 square feet. That number is easy. What it does not include is everything the band has to negotiate: the skimmer throats, the step and bench trims, the light niche, the returns, and on a freeform pool the fact that a rigid sheet of one inch mosaic has to bend round a curve. Order for the cuts, and order the whole job at once — pool tile is a dye lot product and the second box will not match the first, in a location that spends its life at eye level and wet.

Coverage is the input worth getting right
The area is geometry and it is reliable. The material is not, because coverage depends on the product, the thickness, and heavily on what it is going over. A smooth shell takes far less than a rough or previously etched one, and the difference between an optimistic data sheet figure and reality on a twenty year old surface can be a third. That is why the calculator asks for the rate rather than assuming one, and why finish waste has a default of 10 per cent that is on the low side for a resurface.

Before anything gets emptied
An empty pool can float out of the ground. Groundwater pushing up under an unweighted shell has lifted finished pools clear of their beds, and the season, the water table and the soil all decide whether that is a real risk on a given day. Whether a pool gets emptied, when, and what happens first is a decision for a licensed pool contractor, not something to work out from a web page.
Nothing on this page touches water treatment, and that is deliberate. What a new or refinished surface needs after it is filled, in what order and at what levels, is for the applicator and the product manufacturer to settle, working from a test of your own water. There is no dose, level or product anywhere on this site.
Anything electrical within reach of pool water is licensed work, and the reason is that people are standing in the circuit. Bonding, grounding, receptacle placement, clearances and equipment disconnects are set by the code your jurisdiction has adopted and enforced by its inspector, and none of it appears on this page. If a pump, light, heater or panel needs more than plugging into a working receptacle, that is a job for a licensed electrician.

How do I calculate the square footage of a pool for plaster?
Add the floor, the two long walls and the two end walls, then allow for steps and benches. The floor is measured down the slope rather than across the plan, which on a typical residential slope adds about ten per cent to that section. Each long wall is the area under the depth profile, so it is the flat shallow length times the shallow depth, plus the flat deep length times the deep depth, plus the sloping section times the average of the two. The end walls are width times depth at each end. On a 16 by 32 pool going 3.5 to 8 feet that totals about 1,050 square feet, roughly twice the water surface, and the deep end is where the surprise lives.
Why is the interior area so much bigger than the pool size?
Because a pool has five surfaces and only one of them is the one you see. The water surface is 512 square feet on a 16 by 32 pool. The two long walls, averaging over five feet of depth across 32 feet, contribute 341. The deep end wall is 16 feet wide and 8 feet tall for another 128. Add the shallow end and the sloping floor and the total is around 1,050. The consequence is practical rather than academic: anything priced per square foot of interior — plaster, paint, an aggregate finish, an acid wash — costs about twice what someone reasoning from the water surface expects.
How much waterline tile do I need?
Perimeter times band height, plus cuts. A 16 by 32 pool has a 96 foot perimeter, and a 6 inch band on it is 48 square feet. Add for the cuts around skimmer throats, returns, the light niche and the step and bench trims, which on a pool with a spa spillway and a tanning ledge can be a surprising number of individual pieces. Two things are worth doing regardless of the arithmetic: buy the whole quantity in one lot, because pool tile is dye lot material and the mismatch shows at eye level for the life of the pool, and buy a box more than you need, because the same tile will not be available when a piece comes off in eight years.
Does this work for a vinyl liner?
For understanding the area, yes, and the floor slant and wall arithmetic are the same. For ordering a liner, no. Liners are made to a pattern that follows the specific wall panel layout, corner radii, step and bench shapes and the deep end profile of your pool, and they are ordered from a measurement sheet the manufacturer supplies with a dozen specific dimensions on it, or from a template. A square footage figure will not get you a liner that fits. What coverage rate should I use for the finish?
The one on the product data sheet for the material you are actually using, at the thickness or film build you are actually applying, which is why this page asks rather than assumes. The variation is large. A cementitious finish applied at three eighths of an inch and one applied at half an inch differ by a third in material. A coating over a smooth new shell and the same coating over an etched twenty year old surface can differ by more than that, because the rough surface has more area than its dimensions say and absorbs into the bargain. If you are between two figures, use the pessimistic one and carry the waste allowance as well.
