What the glass is actually costing you
A wall in a modern house has insulation in it. A window does not: it is a thin sheet of a material that conducts heat readily, and even a good double-pane unit performs at a fraction of the wall around it. In a room with a large window wall, the glazing can account for a startling share of the heat leaving the room, which is why standing beside a window on a January evening feels different from standing in the middle of the same room.
Two separate things are happening there, and they have different fixes. Heat conducts through the glass itself, and cold air leaks in around the moving parts of the sash and where the frame meets the rough opening. Film addresses only the first. The trapped layer of still air between film and glass is the insulation, which is why the seal around the edge matters more than the film's thickness. If you leave a gap at one corner, air circulates through the space and you have hung a decoration.
Reading a savings claim
Packaging tends to advertise a large percentage, and the number is not invented so much as measured under conditions that favor it. What actually determines your result:
- What you already have. Single-pane sashes have enormous room for improvement. A recent low-e double-pane unit has very little, and the film may be within the noise.
- How much glass there is. A room that is half window responds far more than a bedroom with one small opening.
- How you heat. A house held at a constant temperature all day responds differently from one that is heated for four hours in the evening.
- The winter itself. Year-over-year bills swing thirty percent on weather alone. A single before-and-after comparison cannot separate the film from the January you happened to get.
That is why the saving is an input here rather than a constant. Run it twice, once optimistic and once pessimistic, and make the decision on the pessimistic number.
Getting it on the window
For a shrink kit, the sequence matters more than the technique. Clean the frame with alcohol so the tape sticks, run the double-sided tape all the way around without breaking the line at the corners, press the film on from the top and work down leaving it deliberately loose, then go around with a hairdryer on medium at a few inches' distance. The wrinkles pull flat as it shrinks. Trim the excess with a fresh blade only after the film is tight, because trimming first leaves you nothing to grip.
For bubble wrap, mist the glass generously and press the bubble side to the glass, so the trapped domes face the pane. Skimping on the water is the reason it starts peeling from a corner three days later. Cut it slightly oversize and run it into the frame reveal to close the edge gap. Coming off in spring it leaves nothing behind, and unlike shrink film it costs nothing to redo badly.
Summer changes the answer
Leaving winter film up through summer is a per-window judgment. On a west-facing window that bakes all afternoon, blocking the sun is worth something for cooling. On a north-facing window that never gets direct sun, you are giving up the view and daylight for an insulating effect you will not notice in July. Where film sits among the bigger options
Replacing a window costs several hundred to well over a thousand dollars per opening, and the payback measured strictly in energy is usually long enough that people replace windows for other reasons: rot, jammed sashes, noise, or resale. Film is a twenty-dollar experiment against that, and it makes sense as a way to get through a winter in a rental or to find out how much of the discomfort is really the glass. Between the two sit the measures that cost little and last: weatherstripping, insulating the attic above the room, and heavy curtains closed at dusk, which trap their own air layer and are worth as much as film on a big window. One measurement habit is worth more than any of this arithmetic: read the meter, not the bill. Gas bills bundle a delivery charge, a rate that moves and a month that is never the same length. The therms or the cubic feet on the same statement are the physical quantity, and comparing those year over year — ideally against how cold the month actually was — is the only home comparison that tells you whether anything you did worked.

Which side of bubble wrap faces the glass?
The bubble side. The domes have to sit against the pane so that the air they hold is trapped between the plastic and the glass, which is the entire insulating mechanism. Flat side against the glass gives you a smoother look and a much smaller effect, and it also sticks less well, because the water film you spray on has less to hold onto. Use small-bubble wrap if you want a bit more light through and large-bubble if you want the thickest air layer.
Can I reuse the film next winter?
Shrink film, essentially never. It has been heat-set to the exact shape of that opening, it tears coming off the tape, and it stretches out of true if you pull on it. Bubble wrap reuses well: peel it off, let it dry, roll it rather than folding it, and label each piece with the room it came from. Folded storage puts creases in it that show as gaps and bubbles when you put it back up. Adhesive solar films are not removable and reapplyable at all.
Will film stop condensation on my windows?
It reduces water on the glass and can move the problem somewhere less visible. Raising the interior surface temperature means the pane is less often below the dew point, so less water forms there. But if humid room air gets sealed into the gap between film and glass, it condenses on the cold side of that gap where you cannot wipe it, and over a winter that is how sills get moldy. Seal it dry, and treat the underlying cause: condensation is indoor humidity meeting a cold surface, so a bathroom fan that actually vents outside and a few minutes of cross-ventilation a day do more than any film.
How many windows will one kit cover?
Multiply it out rather than trusting the window count on the box, which assumes a small standard opening. A 62 inch by 17.5 foot kit is about 90 square feet of film. A 36 by 60 inch window is 15 square feet, so five of those is 75, and with a 15 percent trim allowance you are at 86 — one kit, with nothing to spare. A single 72 by 80 inch slider is 40 square feet on its own and eats nearly half the kit. Mixed window sizes waste more, because the offcut from a tall window is rarely the right shape for a short one.
Does film work on windows that already have blinds or a screen?
Interior blinds are not a problem if you tape to the outer face of the frame, but check the blind clears the film before you shrink it, because a slat resting against tight film will dimple it permanently. Interior screens have to come out. Storm windows change the calculation altogether: an installed storm already creates the trapped air layer that film is trying to create, so adding film inside gains much less than it would on a bare single pane, and any gain comes with a real risk of condensation in a space you cannot get to.
