Where the intensity comes from

Skipping at a moderate cadence sits at 11.8 METs on the compendium, against 9.8 for running at a ten kilometre per hour pace and 3.5 for ordinary walking. Per minute it is more than three times a walk. The mechanism is that every skip is a whole-body action — calves and feet doing the propulsion, forearms and shoulders turning the rope, trunk holding position — repeated roughly twice a second with no coasting phase anywhere in it.

The practical translation is that a thousand skips at a moderate cadence is eight to ten minutes and costs somewhere near 130 kcal for a 165 lb adult. It is also why a beginner cannot hold a single unbroken minute. That is not a fitness failure; the intensity genuinely is high, and the coordination cost on top of it makes the first sessions harder than the MET value alone suggests.

Volume rises on connective tissue time, not cardio time

Aerobic fitness responds within days. Tendon, fascia and bone remodel over weeks, and the mismatch is the entire injury story of skipping. Someone reasonably fit can do 2,000 skips on day one without running out of breath, and will have medial tibial pain by day four. Landing mechanics matter as much as volume. Land on the ball of the foot with the knee softly bent and let the heel come close to the floor without slamming it, and keep the jump to an inch or two — clearing more height adds impact and buys nothing, since the rope only needs a few centimetres. A quiet landing is a well-absorbed landing, and the sound is a usable feedback signal.

Surface changes the loading meaningfully. Wood, rubber matting and packed dirt all give a little. Concrete does not, and it is the most common surface people default to.

What it does and does not do for body composition

At 1,500 to 2,000 skips a day, five or six days a week, the gross energy cost is roughly 200 to 260 kcal per session. Over a month that is in the region of 5,000 kcal, which corresponds to somewhat over a pound of fat if intake holds steady — and intake holding steady is the part that usually does not happen. Skipping is a good conditioning stimulus and a mediocre standalone weight-loss instrument, which is true of essentially all exercise.

Where it is more interesting is as an intensity tool. Double unders and crossovers spike heart rate quickly and recover quickly, which makes them a convenient interval medium: thirty seconds of double unders inside a basic-bounce block produces a genuinely different cardiovascular stimulus in the same total time. The calorie difference between cadences is modest; the difference in what the session trains is not.

Choosing the rope

Weighted beaded ropes are the standard beginner recommendation and the reasoning holds up: the extra mass gives clear feedback about where the rope is in its arc, which is most of what a novice is learning. PVC and coated wire ropes turn faster and are what you want once the basic bounce is automatic, but they punish a mistimed turn with an unhelpfully sharp reminder. Handles should sit near navel height with the elbows close to the ribs, and the turn should come from the wrists rather than the shoulders — shoulder-driven turning is the fastest route to a tired upper back and a sloppy rope path.

Questions people ask

Will skipping build bulky calves?

At the volumes and intensities used for conditioning, no. Skipping is high-repetition, low-resistance work — the calf is doing many small contractions against body weight, which is a poor stimulus for substantial hypertrophy. What people notice in the first weeks is transient swelling from blood flow and fluid shift after a session, which resolves within hours. Calf size is dominated by genetics and by heavy resistance training, not by skipping.

Can I skip indoors in an apartment?

The impact transmits through the floor structure regardless of what you put on top of it, and a thick mat reduces the sound in your own room more than it reduces what the neighbour below hears. Ropeless handles remove the rope but keep the jump, which is the part that transmits. If the building is the constraint, the honest answer is to skip elsewhere and use non-impact conditioning indoors — step-ups, fast marching in place, or anything that raises heart rate without a landing phase.

Is skipping on an empty stomach a problem?

It is higher intensity than most fasted-state advice assumes. Fasted work is well tolerated at low intensity; at 12 METs, blood glucose and available carbohydrate are more likely to constrain the session, and light-headedness is a common report. If you prefer training early, something small an hour beforehand generally makes the session better rather than worse. If you do go out fasted, keep it short and stop on the first sign of dizziness rather than working through it.

The energy figures are close; the training effects are not interchangeable. Running distributes load over a longer stride cycle and develops a different movement pattern, while skipping concentrates a higher rate of small impacts on the forefoot and demands more from the calf and foot. Neither substitutes cleanly for the other.
