Adding it up honestly

A loaded horse trailer is the tare weight plus everything you put in it, and the everything is usually the larger half. Two 1,100 lb horses are 2,200 lb. Three hundred pounds of tack and trunks, eighty pounds of hay, and thirty gallons of water at 8.34 lb per gallon is another 630. That is 2,830 lb of payload on a 3,500 lb trailer, giving 6,330 lb going down the road when the plate said 3,500.

Water is the line people forget, and it is not small. A US gallon of water weighs 8.34 lb, so a 40 gallon tank filled is 334 lb, which is a third of a horse. It is also the only substantial weight on the trailer you can remove in five minutes and replace at the destination, which makes it the first lever to reach for when a rig is close to a limit.

Horse weights themselves carry uncertainty. If you are working from a taped estimate rather than a scale, the ten percent band on each horse compounds: two horses estimated at 1,100 lb each could be 1,980 lb or 2,420 lb, a 440 lb spread on the same load. Every rig has several ratings, and the binding constraint is whichever runs out first. They are not interchangeable and a large number on one does not buy room on another.

The one that catches horse rigs most often is the vehicle GVWR rather than any towing figure, because tongue weight lands entirely on the vehicle payload. A 6,330 lb loaded trailer at twelve percent puts 760 lb on the ball, and that 760 lb comes out of the same allowance as the passengers, the dog and the tack in the back seat. Plenty of vehicles that can comfortably pull the trailer run out of payload before they run out of pulling.

Where those numbers come from matters as much as the arithmetic. The trailer plate and the door jamb label are the sources. A forum post, a brochure, a model-year table on a website and a figure someone remembers are not, because options fitted to a specific vehicle change its curb weight and therefore its payload, and trailer options change tare. The only figure better than the plate is a weighbridge ticket for your actual rig.

Weigh it rather than compute it

Everything on this page is a planning estimate that a scale settles in fifteen minutes. Public weighbridges will give you axle-by-axle weights, and the sequence that tells you the most is three passes: the vehicle alone loaded as you travel, the vehicle hitched with the trailer loaded, and the trailer alone unhitched. From those three you get the real tare, the real loaded trailer weight, and the real tongue weight by subtraction, with no assumed percentage anywhere.

The tongue weight percentage in particular is the softest assumption in the calculation, and it is not a property of the trailer. It is a property of where the load sits relative to the axles, which for a horse trailer means which stalls are occupied and where the tack and water are stowed. How much does a loaded two-horse trailer weigh?

Add it up rather than quoting a figure, because the payload is usually heavier than the trailer. A common bumper-pull two-horse might tare somewhere around 3,000 to 4,000 lb. Two 1,100 lb horses add 2,200. Three hundred pounds of tack, eighty of hay and thirty gallons of water at 8.34 lb per gallon add another 630. That lands the loaded weight somewhere around 6,000 to 7,000 lb, roughly double the empty figure people quote. Which rating actually limits me?

Whichever runs out first, and for horse rigs it is frequently the tow vehicle GVWR rather than any pulling figure. Tongue weight sits on the vehicle, in the same allowance as passengers and cargo, so a loaded trailer putting 700 or 800 lb on the ball can consume most of a vehicle payload before anyone gets in. The other three to check are the trailer GVWR on the trailer plate, the trailer axle rating, and the combined rating for both together. Beyond the four headline numbers, the hitch, ball, coupler, receiver and tyres each carry their own rating, and the lowest-rated component in the chain governs the whole rig.

Where do I find the ratings for my vehicle and trailer?

The vehicle GVWR and axle ratings are on the certification label in the driver door jamb. The combined rating is usually in the owner manual or towing supplement rather than on the label. Trailer GVWR and axle ratings are stamped on the trailer plate, usually on the frame near the front. Curb weight from a brochure is the least reliable number in the whole exercise because fitted options change it, so a weighbridge pass with the vehicle as you actually travel is worth doing once. Figures from forums, model tables and memory are not sources for any of this.

Is there a weight I am allowed to tow without a special licence?

That depends entirely on where you are, and this page does not state it. Licence classes, weight thresholds, braking requirements, permits and inspection rules for towing are set by state and local law, they differ from one jurisdiction to the next, and they change over time. A rig that is unremarkable in one state may need something extra in another, and travelling across a line does not exempt you from what applies there.
