The tongue takes a tenth of the load. The axles take the rest, and the rest is the number that decides whether a bearing runs hot on a July afternoon two hundred miles from anywhere.

Subtract the tongue first, then compare

A loaded trailer weighs what it weighs, but that weight is not all sitting on the trailer. The share that rests on the ball is being carried by the tow vehicle, and it does not appear on the trailer axles at all. So the axle load is the loaded trailer weight minus the tongue weight, and on a typical bumper pull at 12 percent that is 88 percent of the total. The remaining 12 percent shows up on the other end of the rig, where it counts against the tow vehicle payload rather than the trailer axles.

That subtraction explains something that confuses people the first time they read a trailer plate: the axle ratings frequently add up to less than the GVWR. A 7,000 lb trailer on two 3,500 lb axles is exactly balanced at zero tongue weight, which is a trailer nobody should tow. With a normal tongue share the axles are comfortably inside their rating at full GVWR. It is not a mistake on the plate and it is not spare capacity you can use.

The one that catches people is the tire. A trailer is often sold with tires that leave very little margin at GVWR, and that margin only exists at the cold inflation pressure printed on the sidewall. Run those tires a few psi low, on a hot road, at highway speed, fully loaded, and the rating on the sidewall is describing a tire in different conditions from the one you are driving on. Trailer tires overwhelmingly fail from heat, and heat comes from underinflation and overload together. Checking pressures cold before a trip does more for a loaded trailer than almost anything else you can do to it.

Even distribution is an assumption, not a fact

This calculator divides the axle load evenly between the axles and evenly between the tires, because there is no way to do better without weighing each wheel. Real trailers deviate from that in several ways, and each one concentrates load somewhere.

  • Tandem equalisation. A tandem uses an equaliser between the springs so that the two axles share the load over bumps. When a bushing wears out or the equaliser seizes, the sharing stops and one axle takes a much larger share than half, permanently.
  • Side to side. Load stacked against one wall, a generator mounted on one fender, a water tank on one side — all of it lands on the tires on that side. A trailer that is 60/40 side to side has one tire near its limit while the other is loafing.
  • Fore and aft on a tandem. Weight ahead of the axle group loads the front axle more; behind it, the rear. It is a smaller effect than the equaliser problem but it is real.
  • Axle alignment. A bent axle or a shifted spring puts a tire on its edge, which reduces the contact patch that is carrying the rated load.

None of that is visible in an arithmetic result. What makes it visible is a scale with individual wheel weights, or the cheaper substitute: looking at how the tires are wearing, and putting a hand on each hub after an hour of driving. A hub that is markedly hotter than the others is telling you something before it tells everybody else.

When the numbers come out close

Close to a rating is not inside it. The figures you entered came from a plate, a sidewall and a scale, all of which have their own uncertainty, and the load itself moves. If a rating comes out above 90 percent on this page, the honest options are to take weight off, add capacity that is actually rated for it, or make two trips. Rounding in your own favour on axle capacity is how a bearing lets go.

Questions people ask

Why do my two 3,500 lb axles not add up to my 7,000 lb GVWR usefully?

They do add up to 7,000, and that is the point of confusion. The axles are rated for what they carry, and what they carry is the loaded trailer weight minus whatever is resting on the ball. At GVWR with a 12 percent tongue weight, the axles are carrying about 6,160 lb against a combined 7,000 lb rating, so there is real margin there. The trap is reading it the other way round and concluding you can load 7,000 lb of cargo onto the deck because the axles are rated for 7,000. GVWR is the ceiling for the whole loaded trailer including its own weight, so the cargo capacity is GVWR minus the trailer empty weight, and on a trailer that weighs 1,900 lb empty that is 5,100 lb rather than 7,000.

Does upgrading the tires or the axles raise my GVWR?

No. GVWR is assigned by the manufacturer for that trailer as a complete assembly and it is not a function of any one component you can swap. The frame, the coupler, the suspension mounting points, the brakes and the certification all belong to that rating. Fitting higher-rated tires removes a bottleneck at the tire, which is a genuine improvement if the tire was the weakest link, but it does not license loading the trailer past its plate. There are legitimate routes to re-rating a trailer, and they involve the manufacturer or a qualified engineer and a certification process, not a receipt for tires. Meanwhile the rating that governs on the road is the one on the plate.

How do I find the axle load if I cannot get to a scale?

This page gives you an estimate from two numbers, and the quality of the estimate depends entirely on the tongue weight figure. A measured tongue weight from a tongue scale makes the axle load reliable, because everything else in the sum is just the total weight. A guessed percentage makes it a guess. If the total loaded weight is also unknown, you are estimating from an estimate and the result deserves a wide margin. Public scales — grain elevators, landfills, truck stops, recycling yards — will weigh a trailer for a few dollars and it is the only way to actually know. Weigh once with a representative load and you will have a calibration for everything you haul afterwards.

What does a hot hub mean?

It means something in that hub is absorbing energy that the others are not: a bearing running dry or wrongly adjusted, a brake dragging, a seal that has failed and let the grease out, or an axle carrying more than its share. Warm is normal and hot is not, and the comparison between hubs on the same trailer is more informative than any absolute temperature. The reason to check is that wheel bearing failures on trailers are common, they progress from noise to heat to seizure quickly, and the outcome is a wheel and hub separating from the trailer at speed. Feel each hub at every fuel stop on a long haul. It costs thirty seconds and it is the single most useful habit for anyone who tows.

Do I count the weight of the trailer brakes, ramps and toolbox as cargo?

No, they belong in the empty weight, and that is why the empty weight has to be a weighed figure rather than the brochure number. Anything permanently attached to the trailer — ramps, a toolbox, a spare and its carrier, a winch, a fender-mounted generator, side rails somebody added — was not on the trailer when the manufacturer stated its empty weight, so it has silently eaten cargo capacity. On older utility trailers this can be a few hundred pounds of accumulated additions. Weigh the trailer empty as it stands today, use that figure, and the cargo capacity you calculate will be the one you actually have.
