The most useful rule in starting this hobby is to buy a tool when a project you actually intend to build requires it, and not before. That sounds obvious and almost nobody does it, because tool buying is fun and cutting joinery is difficult. The result is a garage with a jointer in it and no finished furniture.

Take a class. A community college shop course, a weekend class at a woodworking store or a maker space orientation costs relatively little, puts a person next to you who can see what you are about to do wrong, and covers in three hours what would take a season of video watching to half-absorb. Video is excellent for learning what a technique looks like and terrible for catching the specific bad habit you personally have developed. If a class is not available, find one person who has done this for years and ask if you can spend an afternoon in their shop. Nearly all of them say yes.
Wood is not a stable material
The single thing that separates work that lasts from work that self-destructs in the first winter is understanding that wood moves. Boards take on and give up moisture with the humidity of the air around them, and they change dimension when they do — barely at all along the length of the grain, but appreciably across the width. A wide solid panel can change by a noticeable fraction of an inch between a humid summer and a heated winter.
The consequences are entirely practical. A solid wood tabletop screwed rigidly to a frame at every point will crack, because it must move and you have told it not to.
