Improving Home Wi-Fi

Is the internet slow, or is the Wi-Fi slow? Those are two different problems with two different sets of fixes, and nearly everyone starts spending money before answering the question. The test takes ninety seconds and it decides whether you need a phone call to your provider or a different shelf for the router.

Separate the two problems first

Plug a laptop into the router with an ethernet cable and run a speed test. Then unplug it, stand in the same room, and run the same test over Wi-Fi. That comparison tells you which half of the system to work on, and it is the step almost everyone skips.

Worth knowing before you make that call: the speed on your bill is the speed to your router, not to your laptop. Wireless loss, distance, walls, the age of the device and how many things are streaming at once all sit between the two numbers, and none of that is a fault. Providers describe the figure as up to for exactly this reason.

What a speed test is and is not

A speed test measures the throughput between one device and one server at one moment. It is a useful relative measurement — the same test from the same device on wired and then wireless is genuinely informative — and a poor absolute one. Results move with which server was picked, what else on your network is active, whether the device itself is the limit, and the time of day. Run it three times, at different hours, and write the results down. A single number tells you very little; a pattern tells you a lot.

Also check what the device thinks it is connected to. Phones and laptops will cling to a distant band or an old standard long after a better option is available, and a browser detail page such as my browser info is a quick way to confirm what a given device reports about itself before you blame the network.

Placement, which beats every product you can buy

Radio waves are attenuated by mass and absorbed by water, and a router does not know where you are. Nearly every home with bad coverage has the router where the cable enters the house — a corner, a basement, a closet, behind a television — which is the worst location and the one the installer chose because it was convenient.

If the cable enters at a bad spot, the fix is a long ethernet cable from the modem to a better router location, not a wireless accessory. A hundred-foot run costs less than an extender and loses nothing.

Bands: 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz

Modern routers broadcast on more than one frequency band, and the trade is consistent: lower frequency travels further and through more walls, higher frequency carries more data.

Many routers present all bands under a single network name and steer devices automatically, which mostly works and occasionally strands a phone on 2.4 GHz in a room where 5 GHz would be four times faster. If you have a device that is chronically slow in one place, splitting the bands into distinct network names and choosing manually is a legitimate diagnostic, even if you merge them again afterward.

On 2.4 GHz there are only three non-overlapping channels — 1, 6 and 11 — and in an apartment building all three are usually occupied. Setting a fixed channel instead of automatic sometimes helps and sometimes does not; it costs nothing to try. On 5 GHz there is enough room that channel selection rarely matters.

Extenders, mesh and the backhaul problem

This is where money gets spent badly. A range extender receives on the same radio it retransmits with, so on a single-band unit every packet is sent twice and the throughput on that link is roughly halved. It will show full bars on your phone while delivering less than it did before, which is precisely why people believe extenders work — signal strength went up, and signal strength is not speed.

Mesh systems are better designed, using a dedicated radio for the link between nodes, but they obey the same physics. A mesh node is only as good as its connection back to the main unit. Put a node at the edge of coverage, where it can barely hear the router, and it will faithfully rebroadcast a weak, slow link to the whole far end of the house — worse than no node at all, because devices will now prefer it. Nodes belong roughly halfway between the router and the dead zone, in a spot with a solid connection, not in the dead zone itself.

Your equipment and your provider

Two things about US home internet are worth checking once and then forgetting. First, most providers rent you a modem or gateway for a monthly fee that continues indefinitely, and buying a compatible unit outright typically pays for itself inside a year or two. Confirm compatibility with your provider first, and note that some services genuinely require their own hardware. Second, plenty of plans carry a monthly data cap with overage charges, and a household that has added streaming, cloud backup and game downloads can cross it without noticing. Both facts live in the service terms rather than in the advertising.

Reboot the modem and the router properly before you call anyone: unplug both, wait a full minute, power the modem first and let it fully sync, then the router. It is a cliché because it genuinely resolves a real class of problems. Router firmware updates matter too, less for speed than for security, and many routers do not apply them on their own.

When you do call, describe the wired result rather than the wireless one. A provider is responsible for the service to the modem; they are not responsible for how a signal travels through your walls, and leading with a wireless number invites a conversation about your router instead of their line.

Security, briefly

Change the router administration password, which is separate from the Wi-Fi password and is frequently still the default printed on the label. Use WPA3 if every device supports it and WPA2 otherwise; anything older should be treated as open. Put guests and smart-home gadgets on a guest network so a compromised device cannot reach your computers. And pick a Wi-Fi passphrase long enough to matter — length beats complexity, and the password strength checker makes the point faster than an argument does.

Try the free things in order — move the router, split the bands, reboot properly, update the firmware — and give each one a week before you decide. Most homes never reach the part of this page where you buy something, and the ones that do usually needed a cable rather than a gadget.

Questions people ask

Should I use the 2.4 GHz or the 5 GHz network?

Use 5 GHz for anything you care about the speed of and that is within a room or two of the router — laptops, phones, streaming devices, video calls. Use 2.4 GHz for distance and for low-bandwidth devices such as smart plugs, thermostats and sensors, which need reliability rather than throughput. The trade is fixed by physics: lower frequency travels further and through more walls, higher frequency carries more data. If your router presents both under one name and a particular device is always slow in one room, splitting them into separate network names and choosing manually is a reasonable thing to try.

Do Wi-Fi extenders actually work?

A single-band extender roughly halves the throughput on the link it serves, because it receives and retransmits on the same radio. Your phone will show more bars and deliver less data, which is why the reputation of these devices is better than their performance. If you need coverage at the far end of a house, the ordering is: move the router, run an ethernet cable to a better location, install a mesh system with nodes placed roughly halfway to the dead zone, and only then consider an extender. A mesh node placed inside the dead zone itself makes things worse rather than better.

Why is my Wi-Fi slower than the speed I pay for?

Because the number on your bill describes the connection to your router, not to your laptop. Between them sit distance, walls, the band you are on, the age of the wireless chip in the device, and everything else in the house using the connection at the same time. Test wired and wireless from the same spot: if the wired figure is close to the plan and the wireless one is not, it is a coverage problem and the fixes are on this page. If the wired figure is also low, that is a service or modem issue and it is a call to your provider.

Does rebooting the router really help?

For a specific set of problems, yes. Consumer routers accumulate state — address assignments, connection tables, memory that is not reclaimed cleanly — and a reboot clears it, which resolves the class of failures where devices connect but cannot reach anything. Do it properly: unplug both modem and router, wait a full minute, power the modem first and let it finish syncing, then the router. What a reboot does not fix is coverage, congestion or a genuinely slow plan, so if you are rebooting weekly the reboot is a symptom and the cause is elsewhere.

Should I buy my own modem instead of renting one?

In most cases the arithmetic favors buying. The monthly rental on a provider gateway continues for as long as you have the service, and a compatible modem you own typically pays for itself within a year or two and then keeps saving. Confirm the specific model is on your provider approved list before ordering, since compatibility is not universal, and check whether your service requires provider hardware for phone or television features bundled onto the same line. Owning also lets you choose your own router, which is usually better than the one built into a rented gateway.
