How these batteries age

A lithium-ion cell loses capacity through chemistry, not through wear in any mechanical sense. Two processes dominate. The first is cycling: each full charge and discharge slightly degrades the electrode structure and grows the layer that forms on the anode surface, and manufacturers rate cells for a number of cycles — commonly several hundred to around a thousand — down to a stated remaining capacity. The second is calendar aging, which happens whether you use the phone or not, and accelerates sharply with temperature and with time spent sitting at a high state of charge.

That second process is why heat is the lever that matters. Degradation rate roughly doubles for every ten degrees Celsius of sustained elevated temperature, which is far larger than any effect you can produce by adjusting when you plug in. A phone that spends summers on a car dashboard will lose capacity dramatically faster than an identical phone that does not, regardless of how carefully its owner charges it.

Heat, which is where the damage comes from

The common own-goals are specific and easy to name. Charging under a pillow or a blanket, where the heat the charger produces has nowhere to go. Leaving the phone on a dashboard or in a parked car in summer, where interior temperatures climb far past anything the device is designed for. Playing a demanding game while it charges, which stacks processor heat on top of charging heat. Charging inside a thick protective case on an already-warm day. Using the phone as a navigation unit mounted in direct sun with the charger running, which is the worst of every category at once.

None of that requires a product to fix. Take the case off while fast charging, do not sleep with the phone under the bedding, and treat a hot phone the way you would treat a hot laptop — put it down somewhere with airflow and let it cool before you ask more of it. What battery health percentage actually tells you

Phones report a battery health or maximum capacity figure, and it is worth understanding what produces that number. It is an estimate, calculated by the device from charge and discharge behavior over time, not a direct measurement of the cell. It can drift, it can jump after a software update, and two phones with identical usage can report several percentage points apart. Treat it as a trend line rather than a specification.

What matters more is behavior. A phone that shuts down suddenly at 30 percent, that cannot hold a charge through a normal day it used to manage easily, that runs hot doing nothing, or that drops ten percent in a few minutes of light use, has a battery worth replacing regardless of what the health screen claims. Conversely a phone reporting 82 percent that comfortably lasts your day does not need anything.

Replacement, and the swelling problem

Below roughly 80 percent of original capacity, most people notice. That is the point where a replacement is worth pricing, and a battery replacement is dramatically cheaper than a new phone — it is one of the few repairs where the value is obvious. Manufacturer service, carrier support channels and independent repair shops all offer it. Manufacturer and authorized service costs more and preserves warranty and water resistance ratings more reliably; independents cost less and vary in quality. Ask what battery they use, whether the water seal is replaced, and what warranty comes with the repair.

One situation is not a repair decision, it is a safety one. If the back of the phone is lifting, the screen is being pushed out of the frame, there is a visible bulge, or the device will not sit flat on a table anymore, the battery is swelling. Stop using it. Stop charging it. Do not press on it, do not try to force the case back together, and above all do not puncture it — a punctured lithium cell can vent flammable gas and ignite. Power it down, keep it away from anything that burns, and take it to a service center or an electronics recycling point that accepts damaged batteries. The same applies to a battery that has been dented or has taken a hard impact.

Battery life and battery health are different problems, and the day-to-day one is mostly the screen. The display is the largest consumer on nearly every phone, so brightness and screen timeout are the two settings with the greatest effect. After that: check the battery usage screen and find the app at the top of the list, because there is almost always one outlier — a poorly behaved social or navigation app, or something holding a location permission it does not need. Turn off background refresh for apps you open manually anyway. In a weak signal area the radio spends significant power hunting for a tower, so airplane mode in a dead zone genuinely helps.
