Open the storage screen before you delete anything. Almost everyone guesses wrong about what is filling the phone, spends an evening clearing app caches and old messages, recovers a couple of gigabytes, and is full again by the weekend — while a few dozen minutes of video sit untouched in the photo library.

Look at the breakdown before you touch anything

Every current phone has a storage screen in its settings that lists what is using space, and on both major platforms it can be sorted by size. Find yours and read it before deleting a single item. The reason is not tidiness — it is that the intuitive suspects are usually wrong, and an hour spent on the wrong category produces a phone that fills up again immediately.

Two numbers on that screen confuse people, so take them out of the way first. The capacity printed on the box is not what you can use: the operating system, the recovery partition and reserved space consume a meaningful slice, so a phone advertised at a given capacity shows noticeably less as available when new. On top of that, storage is sold in decimal gigabytes and often reported by software in binary units, which differ by about seven percent and grow to a real gap at larger sizes. Neither is a fault. The data size converter shows where the discrepancy comes from if a number is bothering you.

Video, then photos, then everything else

On the overwhelming majority of phones, the photo library is the largest single category, and within it video accounts for most of the volume. The arithmetic is unkind: a minute of high-resolution video occupies as much as several hundred still photos, and high frame rate or high dynamic range settings multiply it again. A slow-motion clip of a dog that nobody has watched since can be larger than an entire year of screenshots.

One caution on messaging attachments: media older than a service's retention window may not be downloadable again once you clear it locally. Save anything you want to keep before clearing a conversation, and if the conversation matters, export it rather than trusting that it will still be on a server.

On this device, or in the cloud — the distinction that loses photos

This is the section that matters most, and it is the one that gets skipped. Photo services generally operate in one of two modes, and they behave very differently when you delete something.

The single most common way people lose photographs is this: they see that photos are "in the cloud", conclude the cloud copy is a backup, and delete from the phone to free space — in a synchronized library, where that deletion propagates and removes the only copy. The recently-deleted area buys some time, but not months.

Before you delete anything from a photo library, establish which mode you are in. The reliable test costs nothing: delete one unimportant photo from the phone, wait a few minutes, and look at the service from a computer's web browser. If it is gone there, you are synchronized and deleting from the device is not a way to free space. If it is still there, the copies are independent.

Where the library is synchronized, the right tool is the setting that keeps smaller versions on the device and full originals in the service. It is called something different on every platform — optimize, smart storage, free up space, device storage management — and it frees space without deleting anything anywhere. Look for wording about originals versus optimized versions rather than for a specific menu name, because the names change.

And the underlying point, which is worth repeating because one article is not enough: sync is not backup. A synchronized library protects you against losing the phone and nothing else. Recently deleted still occupies space

Deleting a photo does not free the space. Both major platforms, and most photo services, move deleted items to a recently-deleted area where they sit for a period — commonly around a month, though the exact window varies and has changed over time — before being purged. That is a genuinely good safety feature and it is also why people delete four hundred photos and see the free space number barely move.

To reclaim the space immediately, find the recently-deleted or trash area inside the photo app and empty it. Do that only after you are satisfied with what you deleted, because emptying is the point of no return. The same logic applies inside a photo service accessed on a computer: it keeps its own trash, separate from the phone's.

System, other, and the storage cleaner question

The categories labeled system, other, or similar routinely show tens of gigabytes and cause more alarm than anything else on the screen. They are an aggregate of the operating system itself, system caches, temporary files, and anything the accounting could not attribute elsewhere. They are largely not user-manageable, they fluctuate, and they often shrink on their own after a restart or when the device needs space for something. A restart is the entire intervention available and it is worth trying once.

What is not worth doing is installing a cleaner or optimizer app. On both platforms these have very little access to the categories they claim to clean, the operating system already reclaims temporary files under pressure, and a large share of these apps earn their money through advertising and background activity that costs battery and performance. Apps you keep and apps you do not

Sort the app list by size. The result is usually three or four large items and a long tail that is not worth your attention. For a large app you use rarely, look for an offload or archive option — a feature on both platforms that removes the application while keeping its data, so reinstalling puts you back where you were. For an app you have genuinely finished with, delete it outright, and check whether it left a downloads folder behind.

Clearing an individual app's cache is available on one platform through the app's storage entry, and generally not on the other, where the equivalent is deleting and reinstalling. Both are fine. Note the distinction between clearing cache and clearing data, because the second signs you out and discards settings, and there are apps where that means losing something you cannot get back.

Keeping it from happening again

Three settings, changed once, do more than any amount of periodic cleaning. Turn on whatever your platform calls optimized or device-managed photo storage, so the library stops being a fixed cost. Lower the camera's default video resolution or frame rate if you never watch the footage on a large screen, since that is where the volume comes from. And turn off automatic saving of received media in your messaging apps, which is the setting responsible for thousands of images you never chose to keep.

Then, once a quarter, do the same twenty minutes: sort video by size and delete the top of the list, empty the recently-deleted area, clear finished downloads and offline media, and remove apps you have stopped opening.
