What is actually out of alignment
Almost every system in the body runs on a daily cycle: core temperature, alertness, digestion, hormone release. Why east is harder
Flying west lengthens your day. You stay up later than usual, which is a delay — and delaying the clock is something the body does easily, because its natural drift already runs that direction. Anyone who has stayed up late on a weekend and then slept in knows how little effort that takes.
Flying east shortens your day. You have to fall asleep and wake earlier than your body wants, which is an advance, and advancing the clock is the harder direction. Note the caveat in the second column heading. What matters is the direction of the time change, not the direction on a map — a flight from the U.S. west coast to Asia crosses the date line and is a westward shift in body-clock terms even though it feels like flying into the future. The number of hours the clock moves matters, and so does its sign, and neither is reliably obvious from a map.
Light is the main lever
Light timing is the strongest tool available without pharmacology, and it is directional. The same bright light that helps in the morning after an eastward flight will work against you in the evening. The general principle: light in the hours after your body's temperature minimum — roughly, after your usual wake time — advances the clock, and light in the hours before it delays the clock.
In practical terms, after flying east, get outside in the morning at the destination. Actual daylight, for twenty or thirty minutes, ideally with movement. In the evening, keep the lights low and stay off bright screens close to bedtime. After flying west, do the reverse: get light in the late afternoon and early evening, and keep the morning dim for the first day or two if you are waking at four.
Outdoor light is far stronger than indoor light — the difference is one or two orders of magnitude, not a matter of degree. An overcast morning outside beats a brightly lit room. That is why "go for a walk" is not a soft recommendation here; it is the mechanism.
Shifting before you go
Moving your schedule by an hour a day in the right direction for two or three days before departure removes that much of the gap before you get on the plane. It is unglamorous and it works, and it is most worth doing for eastward trips, where adaptation is slowest.

Most people cannot move three hours in three days around work and family, and partial credit is real — even one hour helps. If it is not feasible, skip it and put the effort into the arrival days instead, which is where the larger gains are anyway.
The flight itself
Set every clock you own to destination time as you board, and make sleeping decisions on that clock rather than on how tired you feel. If it is night at the destination, try to sleep even if it is mid-afternoon where you took off. If it is daytime there, stay awake, however grim the flight has been.
Cabin air is dry and dehydration makes everything about the next two days worse, so drink water steadily. Alcohol is worth skipping on the flight specifically: it fragments sleep quality rather than improving it, and it compounds the dehydration. Caffeine is a legitimate tool but a directional one — useful to stay awake when the destination clock says day, actively harmful when taken within several hours of when you want to sleep.
Move around when you can. Long periods of immobility in a cramped seat carry a small but real clotting risk, particularly for people with existing risk factors, and walking the aisle occasionally, flexing your ankles and staying hydrated all reduce it. The first three days at the destination

One judgment call: if the trip is only two or three days and involves a large shift, it can be more sensible not to adapt at all — keep your home schedule as far as the itinerary allows, schedule anything demanding for what would be your home daytime, and go back without ever having shifted.
