A fish added to a brand-new tank on the day it is filled will usually die, and it will die of something invisible in water that looks perfectly clean. That is the single most common beginner failure in this hobby, it is entirely preventable, and preventing it costs nothing except several weeks of patience before the first fish goes in.

The nitrogen cycle, which is the entire hobby

Fish excrete ammonia continuously, through their gills as well as their waste, and uneaten food and dead plant matter decay into more of it. Ammonia is acutely toxic to fish at very low concentrations. In an established aquarium this is handled by two groups of bacteria living on every surface, mostly inside the filter media: one converts ammonia into nitrite, and a second converts nitrite into nitrate. Nitrite is also highly toxic. Nitrate is far less so, and it is removed by water changes and taken up by live plants.

Those bacterial colonies do not exist in a new tank. They have to grow, and they grow slowly, because they are slow-reproducing organisms and their population size is limited by how much ammonia is available to them. Filling a tank with water and a filter and adding fish the same afternoon means the fish are living in their own accumulating ammonia while the bacteria take weeks to catch up. The fish may survive it with permanent gill damage, or they may not survive it. The water will look completely clear the entire time, which is why beginners do not believe this until it happens to them.

This is often sold under the name new tank syndrome, and it accounts for a very large share of first-month fish deaths. The dechlorinator, the gravel and the decorations have nothing to do with it.

Fishless cycling, step by step

The method is to feed the bacteria an ammonia source with no animal in the tank, and wait until the colony can process a full day's load overnight.

Expect three to eight weeks. It is faster if you can get a handful of used filter media, a sponge, or some gravel from an established healthy tank — that transplants a live bacterial colony and can cut the process dramatically. Many local fish shops will hand a beginner a used sponge if you explain what you are doing, and a friend with an aquarium certainly will. Bottled bacteria products vary a great deal in whether they do anything, and none of them remove the need to test.

A liquid test kit is required equipment, not an accessory. Test strips are convenient and notoriously imprecise for exactly the readings that matter here, and during cycling you are trying to distinguish between zero and a small but lethal number. Buy the liquid kit.

If fish are already in there

If you have already put fish in an uncycled tank — which happens, often because a shop sold the fish and the tank on the same visit — the situation is manageable but demanding. It becomes a fish-in cycle: test daily, and do water changes large enough and often enough to keep ammonia and nitrite near zero, which may mean daily changes for weeks. Feed sparingly. It is more work than fishless cycling and harder on the fish, but it is recoverable.

Bigger tanks are easier, which is backwards from what beginners assume

Everyone starting out reaches for a small tank, reasoning that less water is less to manage and a smaller mistake if the hobby does not stick. The chemistry runs the other way. In a large volume, a mistake is diluted; in a small one it is concentrated. A missed water change, an overfeeding, a dead snail nobody noticed, a heater failing — every one of those is a minor event in twenty-nine gallons and a crisis in five.

Footprint matters as much as volume. A twenty-gallon long tank and a twenty-gallon tall tank hold the same water, but the long one has more surface area for gas exchange and more horizontal swimming room, and it is the better choice for most community fish. Work out the actual volume and the filter turnover you need with the aquarium volume and filter calculator before buying equipment, because filters are rated in gallons per hour and the ratings on the box are optimistic.

Stocking without overloading

The old inch-per-gallon guideline is not useful and produces bad outcomes at both ends. A ten-inch fish is not equivalent to ten one-inch fish — it produces far more waste, needs far more swimming room, and may need a tank several times the size the rule implies. The rule also ignores schooling behavior, adult size, aggression and territory.

Ask five questions before any fish goes in a bag. What size does it reach as an adult? Shops sell juveniles, and the species that most often outgrow beginner tanks include several catfish and cichlids that arrive at two inches and finish near a foot. Does it school, and what is the minimum group? Many popular small fish are visibly stressed in groups under six, so buying three because three is what fits is a welfare decision rather than a compromise. What temperature and water hardness does it want? Goldfish are cool-water animals and do not belong with tropicals, hardness preferences vary widely by species, and your tap water is whatever it is.

Then: is it peaceful with what you already keep, since fin-nippers and territorial species turn a community tank into a slow disaster that is hard to undo? And is it a bottom, middle or top dweller, because spreading fish across the levels of the tank uses the space properly and cuts down on conflict.

Add fish in small groups, weeks apart. Each addition increases the ammonia load, and the bacterial colony needs time to expand to meet it. Dumping a full stocking list into a freshly cycled tank on the same afternoon can crash the cycle and put you back at the start, this time with fish in the water.

Two specific corrections worth making, because they are extremely common. A betta is a tropical fish that needs a heater, a filter and meaningfully more than a bowl — five gallons is a reasonable floor and more is better. And a common goldfish is a large, heavy-waste, cool-water animal that will outgrow any beginner tank sold as a goldfish tank; the small bowl is one of the most persistent bad ideas in the hobby.

The weekly routine, and knowing when to get help

Maintenance is modest once a tank is established and stable. A partial water change of roughly a quarter of the volume each week, with a gravel vacuum to lift waste out of the substrate, handles nitrate and most of what accumulates. Replacement water needs dechlorinating and should be close to tank temperature — pouring cold water into a warm tank stresses fish unnecessarily.

On sick fish, this guide stops short deliberately. Diagnosing fish disease from a description is unreliable, and dosing medications into a tank without knowing what you are treating is a good way to kill the filter bacteria and make the situation considerably worse. What a beginner should do is check the water parameters first, because a surprising proportion of apparent disease is actually a water quality problem, and then get informed help. Aquatic veterinarians exist and can be found through veterinary directories, and an established independent fish shop — the kind with staff who have kept tanks for years — is generally far better help than a general pet chain. Take a water sample and a clear photograph, and describe what changed recently.

The whole hobby rewards the same trait, which is that nothing here can be rushed and every attempt to rush it costs an animal. Set the tank up, feed the bacteria, test the water, and let several weeks pass before the first fish ever sees it.
