Why hitting a stud usually does not work
The advice everyone gives is to fix into a stud, and it is good advice about drywall and bad advice about grab bars. A bar has two fixing points a fixed distance apart, set by the product. Studs sit at their own spacing, set by whoever framed the wall decades earlier. The chance that both ends of a particular bar land on framing, in the position the bar actually needs to be in, is small, and it gets smaller the more you constrain where the bar goes.
The calculator reports, for each bar you list, how many stud centres fall inside its run. Two is lucky. One is normal. Zero happens on short bars. Once you see that on your own wall the argument for continuous backing stops being a matter of best practice and becomes a matter of geometry: backing makes the whole band solid so the bar can go where the person using it needs it, rather than where a framer put a stud.
Backing runs merge, and that is usually cheaper
Each bar generates a backing interval — the bar itself plus your allowance past each end. When two of those intervals overlap or nearly touch, the sensible answer is one continuous piece rather than two, and the calculator merges them for you. Watch the merged count against the bar count. Three bars often become one run, and one run of backing is fewer cuts, fewer joins, less measuring and less that can be got wrong later when somebody moves a bar four inches.
The allowance past each end is your figure, not a published one. It is doing two jobs: giving the fixings something to land on, and covering the fact that the bar will not go exactly where the drawing says once somebody is standing in the room deciding. Generosity there is nearly free. The material is cheap while the wall is open and impossible once it is closed.
Sheet goods against solid blocking
Both appear on this page because both are used and the trade-offs are real rather than a matter of taste.

The bay-by-bay problem with blocking is that the gap between rows is not backing. If the bar ends up between your two rows, it is fixed into board again. That is the argument for making the band tall, for adding a third row, or for the sheet.
Bays are never all the same
The take-off cuts every blocking piece to its own bay because on a real wall the bays are not equal. The first one from the corner is short and odd. There is a doubled stud somewhere. Something was added when the plumbing went in. The calculator lays the studs out from the first centre you give it, which is why finding that first centre with a magnet on the fastener heads is worth the five minutes: laying the studs out from the corner instead is how a take-off ends up a bay short.
The typical piece length shown is what a full bay gives at your spacing, less the stud thickness. Use it for ordering and cut to the actual bay on the wall.
What this page will not tell you, and who to ask instead
There is no load rating here, no fastener schedule, no anchor specification and no statement of how thick the backing should be. That is not caution for its own sake. The bar manufacturer tests the product and publishes what it must be fixed to, and that publication is the authority — a bar fixed some other way is a bar with no rating at all. The building department enforces what applies to your building. Between them they own the specification and they can be held to it.
Mounting heights are the same story and the field for them ships empty. What height a bar goes at depends on which rules govern the building, and a house somebody is adapting for themselves, a rented unit and a building open to the public are not governed the same way. It also depends on what the person using it can reach and pull against, which is a question for them and their occupational therapist and not for a code table or a calculator. A bar fixed into board alone comes out of the wall under the exact load it exists to take, at the moment somebody is putting their weight on it, in the room where falls happen. Back it properly, and get the specification from the people who publish one.
Questions people ask
How much backing should I put in past the end of a bar?
That is the field you fill in, and the honest answer is more than you think. The bar manufacturer states what the flange itself needs to land on, and that is the minimum for the product. The reason to go past it is that the bar will not end up exactly where the drawing says: somebody stands in the finished room, decides it wants to be four inches over, and either the backing is there or the wall comes open again. Backing is cheap while the studs are exposed and expensive afterwards.
Is plywood backing better than solid blocking?
They solve the same problem differently. A sheet let into the studs gives one unbroken band, so a bar can be fixed anywhere along it, and it is fewer cuts. Solid blocking sits inside the bay and changes nothing about the wall thickness, but it only backs the wall where the rows are, and a bar that lands between two rows is back to being fixed into board. Which one is right for a given bar is a question for the bar manufacturer, who publishes what their product has to be fixed to.
What height should grab bars go at?
Not something this page answers, and the field ships empty for that reason. Mounting heights come from the rules that govern the building, and those differ between a private home somebody is adapting for themselves, a rental and a building open to the public, and between jurisdictions and code editions. They also depend on what the particular person can reach and pull against, which is a matter for them and their occupational therapist. Ask the building department or an accessibility specialist for the first, and the person and their therapist for the second.
The wall is already finished. How much has to come off?
The band plus enough above and below to fix the new board back to something, which is the opened-up figure on this page. In a tiled bathroom that is a much bigger job than the number suggests, because the tile does not come off in a band and go back invisibly. It is often the point at which the work gets folded into a retiling that was going to happen anyway, and it is the reason to put backing in whenever a wall in a bathroom is open for any other reason.
Can I fix a grab bar with hollow wall anchors instead?
This page gives no anchor specification and no load rating, and that is a deliberate refusal rather than an oversight. What a bar may be fixed with is published by the manufacturer who tested it, and a fixing method they have not published is a bar with no rating. The failure mode is the point: a bar that pulls out does so under exactly the load it exists to take, with somebody putting their weight on it, in the room where people fall. Ask the bar maker, and ask the building department what applies to your building.
