Why coat counts are not comparable
The film a coat leaves is the wet film multiplied by the volume solids, and nothing else. A product at 30 percent solids laid on at 3 mils wet with a brush leaves 0.9 mils dry. The same product wiped on with a rag and wiped back off might leave 0.6 mils wet, which is 0.18 mils dry. Five wiped coats and one brushed coat are the same film. That is the entire reason a finishing instruction that says three coats tells you almost nothing.
The arithmetic runs off one fixed conversion. A US gallon is 231 cubic inches, and spread one thousandth of an inch thick it covers 1,604 square feet. That figure belongs to the gallon, not to any coating. So if you know your spread rate you know your wet film: 535 square feet a gallon is 1,604 divided by 535, or 3 mils wet.
Measuring your own wet film
You do not need a gauge. Finish a panel of known area, measure how much came out of the tin, and divide. Twelve square feet from 1.5 fluid ounces is 1,024 square feet per gallon, which is 1.57 mils wet. Do that once for the way you actually apply finish and the number is yours for good, which is worth more than any published range because it includes your brush, your hand speed and how much you wipe back off.
Thinning moves the solids, not the wet film. Adding 25 percent thinner by volume to a 30 percent solids product takes it to 24 percent, because the same solids are now spread through 1.25 gallons. The coat still goes on at whatever thickness your hand puts it on at, and it leaves a fifth less behind.
What the film thickness is for
Building film is not automatically better. A thicker film resists water and abrasion for longer and it also looks like a coating rather than like wood, it is more prone to trapping solvent underneath if it goes on too fast, and on a piece that moves seasonally it has more to accommodate. Whether a given use wants half a mil or five mils is a product and application question that belongs to the manufacturer, not to a calculator. Where do I find the volume solids for my finish?
On the technical data sheet for the product, which is usually a download rather than anything printed on the tin. It is given as a percentage, sometimes with a tolerance of a point or two either side. If the sheet gives only a coverage figure in square feet per gallon, you can work backwards: 1,604 divided by that coverage is the wet film the figure assumes, but you still need the solids to know what dries. Do not substitute a figure from a similar-sounding product, because two tins with the same words on the label can sit twenty points apart.
Why does the calculator round up to a whole coat?
Because you cannot apply four fifths of a coat. If the exact answer is 3.3 coats, three coats leaves you short of the target and four puts you past it, and the honest options are to accept the overshoot, to change the target, or to thin the last coat if the product allows it. The page shows both numbers, the exact figure and the rounded one, so you can see how far past the target the last coat carries you. A result like 3.05 is worth a second look, since dropping the target by a couple of percent saves an entire pass.
Does the first coat count the same as the later ones?
Not for material and not always for film. Bare wood absorbs part of the first coat, so more finish leaves the tin than ends up in the film, and how much depends on the species, how it was sanded and whether anything sealed it first. This page treats every coat as building the same film, which is close to true from the second coat on and optimistic for the first. If your target matters, treat the first coat as sealing rather than building and add one to the count.
Is a thicker film better?
It is different, not better, and the trade is not subtle. More film means more of a barrier and more to polish flat, and it also means a surface that reads as coated rather than as wood, more risk of solvent trapped under a skinned surface if coats go on faster than they can release it, and more material to crack if the piece moves. What film a particular product wants for a particular use is a manufacturer question. This page only counts passes to a number you supply.
Can I mix application methods across a schedule?
Plenty of schedules do, and it is a good reason to run the page twice. A common pattern is a thinned first coat wiped on to seal, then brushed coats to build, then a final wiped coat to keep the last pass free of brush marks. Add the films rather than the coats: two wiped coats at 0.18 mils and two brushed at 0.9 mils is 2.16 mils, not four of anything.
