Nothing on this page can give you an official Handicap Index. That number only exists when an authorised club or golf association computes it from scores you have posted through them, and this calculator has no way to be that. What it can do is run the same arithmetic on scores you type in, and show you every step of it.

On the scorecard or the tee marker. It is what a scratch golfer is expected to shoot from those tees.

The system this implements

The arithmetic here is the World Handicap System, the unified scheme adopted in 2020 that replaced the six regional systems previously in use, including the USGA Handicap System in the United States and CONGU in Britain and Ireland. Two pieces of it are implemented directly.

The first is the score differential, which converts a raw score into a course-independent number:

Worked through with the defaults on this page: a 95 on a course rated 71.2 with a slope of 128 gives 113 divided by 128, which is 0.88281, multiplied by 95 minus 71.2, which is 23.8. That comes to 21.0. The same 95 on a slope-113 course would be a differential of exactly 23.8, because on an average-difficulty course the slope factor is one. That is the whole purpose of the number: a 95 is a better round on a hard course than on an easy one, and the differential says by how much.

The second implemented piece is the averaging. WHS takes the lowest eight differentials from the most recent twenty acceptable scores and averages them. With fewer than twenty scores a published schedule applies, using fewer differentials and sometimes subtracting an adjustment: three scores use the lowest one minus 2.0, four use the lowest one minus 1.0, six use the lowest two minus 1.0, and so on up to twenty. That schedule is implemented in full. The result is a Handicap Index to one decimal place.

Course handicap is the third piece, and it is the number you actually use on the first tee. It is the index multiplied by the slope of the tees you are playing divided by 113, plus the difference between course rating and par. With an index of 15.7 on a 128-slope course rated 71.2 against par 72: 15.7 times 1.1327 is 17.78, plus 71.2 minus 72 which is −0.8, giving 16.98, so 17 strokes.

What is deliberately missing

Four significant parts of WHS are not implemented here, and each of them moves the answer.

Net double bogey. WHS does not use your gross score, it uses an Adjusted Gross Score in which every hole is capped at par plus two plus any handicap strokes you receive on that hole. A player with a course handicap of 18 receives one stroke per hole, so their cap is par plus three: an 8 on a par 4 is posted as a 7. This page cannot apply that cap because it never sees your hole-by-hole scores, only the round total. The practical effect is that the estimate here runs high for anyone whose bad rounds contain one or two blow-up holes, which is most people. If your record includes a round where a single hole cost you five strokes, the real differential for that round is lower than the one shown.

PCC. The Playing Conditions Calculation compares the day's scoring across everyone who played that course to what was expected, and shifts every differential from that day by between −1 and +3. It is computed centrally at the end of each day and there is no way to reconstruct it from your own card.

The caps. WHS limits how fast an index can rise. Once your index is more than 3.0 above your Low Handicap Index from the previous twelve months, further increases are halved (the soft cap), and it can never rise more than 5.0 above it (the hard cap). Neither is applied here, so a run of bad rounds will push this estimate up further than a real index would go.

The 0.96 multiplier. The old USGA system multiplied the average of the lowest ten of twenty differentials by 0.96 and truncated to one decimal. That bonus-for-excellence factor is not part of WHS and is not applied here. If you find a calculator that applies it, it is computing a handicap under a system that was retired in 2020.

Why an official index has to come from a club

A handicap only works as a currency between players, and a currency needs an issuer. Under WHS, scores are posted to an authorised golf club or a national or regional association, which holds the record, applies PCC from that day's field, runs the caps against your twelve-month history, and can review or adjust an index that does not reflect demonstrated ability. Membership of an authorised club, which in most countries can be an online or associate club rather than a full course membership, is the mechanism.

Nothing you compute yourself carries that. It is fine for settling a friendly game, useful for tracking whether you are improving, and not accepted for any competition that requires an index. If you need one, contact a club or your national association.

Reading the differentials rather than the index

The table of individual differentials is arguably more useful than the single number underneath it. The spread tells you what kind of golfer you are. A player whose differentials run 14, 15, 16, 16, 17 is consistent and will play close to their handicap most weeks. A player whose differentials run 11, 19, 13, 24, 15 has the same average but plays to their handicap rarely, because the index is built from the good half of the record and the bad half is simply discarded.

That asymmetry is designed in. A Handicap Index represents demonstrated potential, not expected performance. Most golfers shoot their course handicap or better in only about one round in four or five, and beating it by three or more is genuinely rare. Being told you played to your handicap is a compliment, not the baseline.

Getting the rating and slope right

Both numbers are printed on the scorecard, and they are specific to the set of tees, not to the course. A course might be rated 71.2 with a slope of 128 from the white tees and 74.6 with a slope of 141 from the tips. Using the wrong row makes every differential wrong in the same direction, which is worse than not computing them at all.

Two ratings appear on many cards, one for men and one for women, because the bogey golfer used in the slope calculation is defined differently for each. Take the row matching the tees and the rating set you actually played. If a card shows only par and no rating, the course is not rated and scores from it are not acceptable for handicap purposes anyway.

Questions people ask

Is this an official handicap?

No, and it cannot be. An official Handicap Index is issued by an authorised golf club or by a national or regional golf association that holds your posted scoring record. It applies the daily Playing Conditions Calculation from that course's field, caps each hole at net double bogey, enforces the soft and hard caps against your Low Handicap Index from the previous twelve months, and can be reviewed by a handicap committee. This page has none of that. It runs the differential formula and the best-eight-of-twenty average on numbers you type, which is useful for tracking yourself and for settling a friendly match, and is not accepted anywhere that requires an index.

Why is the estimate here higher than my real index?

Most often because net double bogey is not applied. WHS posts an Adjusted Gross Score in which no hole counts for more than par plus two plus your handicap strokes on that hole, so the 9 you took on the par 4 after two in the water is posted as a 7 or an 8. This calculator only receives the round total and cannot cap anything, so blow-up holes flow straight into the differential. The second cause is the soft and hard caps, which limit how far an index can rise above your best form of the last year and are also not applied here. Both push in the same direction, so the estimate reads pessimistic for a player with volatile rounds and is quite close for a steady one.

How many rounds do I need before the number settles?

WHS will produce an index from three scores, but with three it takes the single lowest differential and subtracts 2.0, which is a placeholder rather than a measurement. The schedule stays adjusted up to six scores and stays reduced up to twenty. Twenty is where the system is designed to operate, taking the lowest eight. In practice the figure stops moving much once you are past twelve or so rounds from the same rough standard of course. Below five, a single good day dominates the entire result.

What do I do with 9-hole rounds?

WHS handles them by converting a 9-hole score to a 9-hole differential and pairing it with the next 9-hole differential you post to form one 18-hole score. This calculator does not do that pairing, and doubling a 9-hole score is not a substitute: the second nine of a full round scores worse than the first for almost everyone, so doubling flatters you by two or three strokes. If you only have 9-hole rounds, either post them through a club that will pair them properly or leave them out of this list.

Can I mix scores from different courses?

That is exactly what the differential is for. A score of 88 from a course rated 69.4 with a slope of 117 and a score of 95 from a course rated 73.1 with a slope of 138 are directly comparable once each has been converted. The limitation is in this page, not the system: one rating and one slope are applied to every score in the box. To mix courses properly, run each course separately, note the differentials it produces, and average the lowest eight across the whole combined list yourself. If most of your golf is at one course, entering that course's rating gets you close enough for a self-tracking figure.
