Total pins divided by games, fraction dropped. That single line is the whole of a bowling average, and yet the handicap built on top of it changes by twenty pins depending on which basis and percentage your league happens to have voted in.

The average is one division, and that is deliberate

Add every game you bowled, divide by the number of games, drop the fraction. Five games of 145, 162, 138, 171 and 150 come to 766 pins. Divided by five that is 153.2, and the average you post is 153. There is no weighting for recent form, no adjustment for the lane, and no dropping of a bad night. USBC rules compute a sanctioned average exactly this way and truncate rather than round, which means an average of 153.9 is still 153.

The truncation is worth understanding because it is not a rounding convention, it is a deliberate one-sided rule. It always works against the bowler holding the average and in favour of the field, since a lower posted average produces a higher handicap. Over a season the difference is under a pin, but it is why the number on the sheet sometimes looks a point lower than the one you worked out on your phone.

What a handicap actually does

A handicap exists so that a 140 bowler and a 200 bowler can compete on the same sheet. The usual formula is:

That bowler adds 60 to every game and 180 to a three-game series. A bowler averaging 200 in the same league gets 20 x 0.90 = 18. The 47-pin gap between their raw averages shrinks to a 5-pin gap after handicap, which is roughly one lucky split conversion. That compression is the entire point.

The basis and the percentage are local decisions. There is no national standard setting them, and leagues in the same building often differ. A 220 basis at 90% is the most common arrangement you will meet, but 200 at 100%, 210 at 80% and 230 at 90% are all in regular use. At 100% the handicap fully erases the skill gap and the match becomes a contest of who beats their own average by more; at 70% or 80% the better bowler retains a real edge. Leagues argue about this every year.

One more rule that catches people: if your average is at or above the basis, your handicap is zero. It never goes negative. A 235 average in a 220 league gives up nothing to the field, it simply receives nothing.

How many games before the number means anything

Three games is a night out, not a measurement. Game-to-game standard deviation for a league bowler typically runs 15 to 25 pins, so a three-game average carries a margin of error of roughly ten pins either way. USBC will not establish a sanctioned average until 21 games have been bowled, and leagues that start handicapping earlier usually carry the previous season's average until the new one qualifies.

For your own tracking, a rolling window of the last 10 to 20 games is the practical compromise. It moves fast enough to show that the new ball is working and slowly enough that one bad night does not rewrite it. This calculator shows the standard deviation of the scores you paste for exactly this reason: if your swing is 25 pins, an average that moved 4 points did not actually move.

Why 300 is the ceiling

A strike scores ten plus the next two balls, so a frame in a string of strikes is worth 30. Twelve consecutive strikes over ten frames plus the two fill balls gives 12 x 30 divided across the sheet, which totals 300. Spares score ten plus the next single ball, so an all-spare game where every spare is converted with a nine-count first ball tops out at 190. Nine pins every frame with no mark at all is 90.

The gap between 190 and 90 is what makes spare shooting the cheapest available improvement. A bowler converting 40% of spares who moves to 75% picks up roughly 25 pins per game without changing anything about the strike ball. Chasing strikes at a 150 average is optimising the wrong term.

Comparing averages across houses is a category error

House oil patterns are laid to reward a broad range of ball paths, which is why they are also called free-hook or wall patterns. Sport patterns, and most tournament conditions, flatten that out. The same bowler with the same equipment routinely averages 15 to 35 pins lower on a sport pattern. Similarly, a synthetic lane bed with fresh oil plays very differently at game one and at game three of the same night as the oil carries down.

So an average is a statement about a bowler, a house, and a pattern taken together. If you are moving leagues or entering a tournament, expect the number to move with you, and do not read the drop as a loss of skill.

Questions people ask

Is a 150 bowling average good?

It puts you in the middle of most house leagues. Casual bowlers who go a few times a year usually average somewhere in the 100 to 130 range, so 150 is comfortably above the general public and unremarkable among people who bowl every week. The honest answer is that the number only means something attached to a house and an oil pattern. A 150 average on a house shot might be a 125 on a sport pattern, and the same bowler moving from a rental ball to a drilled reactive ball commonly picks up 10 to 20 pins with no change in technique at all.

What handicap basis and percentage should our league use?

That is a vote, not a calculation. There is no governing standard. The practical trade-off is that a higher percentage compresses the field more: at 100% of a 220 basis, everyone is theoretically level and the winner is whoever most exceeds their own average, which favours new bowlers whose averages are still low and rising. At 70 to 80% the stronger bowlers retain a genuine edge. Ninety percent of 220 is the most common compromise in the United States and is a reasonable default if the league has no strong feeling. Set the basis above the highest average you expect, or the top bowlers will simply sit at zero handicap and the setting stops doing anything.

Why does the sheet show a lower average than my phone?

Almost always truncation. Sanctioned averages drop the fraction rather than rounding, so 162.8 posts as 162. The other common cause is that the league is carrying an average from a prior season or from a different number of games than you counted. Absences, pre-bowls and blind scores are all handled by league rule and can be included or excluded from the pinfall total. If the gap is more than a pin or two, ask the secretary which games are in the denominator.

Should I include practice games in my average?

For a sanctioned league average you have no choice, the league counts what the league counts. For your own tracking, mixing them distorts the figure in both directions: practice games where you are working on a new release will run low, and games on a lane you have already read will run high. Most people who track seriously keep league games as the headline number and practice separately. If you change equipment or drilling layout, start a fresh count from that point rather than letting the old scores drag the average.
