The two hours that are not in anybody plan

Ask a household how long it takes them to leave and the answer is usually fifteen or twenty minutes. Time it and the answer is closer to two hours, and the gap is made of things nobody counts. Every person in the house takes time individually: shoes, medication, a charger, a phone that is upstairs, and for a child the object they will not leave without. Every animal takes time and at least one of them will not be where it should be. The house itself takes time to secure and the vehicle takes time to load, and those two are independent of how many people are involved.

On the defaults here that comes to about an hour and a half of loading before a wheel turns, and with contingency it is over two. That figure is the reason this page exists. Households that have run the number leave earlier, and leaving earlier is the only variable in an evacuation that is genuinely under your control.

Evacuation traffic is not traffic

The second thing that ruins timing estimates is the assumption that the drive takes as long as the drive normally takes. It does not, because an evacuation puts an entire region onto a handful of routes within the same few hours. Journeys that take one hour in ordinary conditions have taken five and six in real events, and the delay is not spread evenly along the road. It concentrates at bridges, at junctions, at any point where lanes reduce, and at fuel stations that have run dry.

The factor is an input because no single number is right for every route, and the honest way to use it is to run the calculation at more than one value. The difference between 2 and 4 on a long route is several hours of departure time, and the whole point of the exercise is to see how sensitive the start time is to something you cannot control.

Fuel, routes and the things that go wrong before you leave

Vehicles that are half full when the order comes have to stop, and the stop is on the same route as everyone else needing one. Keeping the tank above half through a season when evacuation is plausible removes a stop from the plan, and removing a stop is worth more than any driving decision made later. Routes are worth deciding in advance and worth having two of, because the primary one may already be closed. Print or write them down, since navigation depends on a network that may be congested or down, and check whether your area publishes designated evacuation routes, which are the ones that will be managed and signposted. Where you are going matters as much: a destination that knows you are coming, far enough away to be outside the event, is worth arranging before the season rather than during it. What actually leaves with you

Timing and load interact. A kit that takes twenty minutes to assemble is not a kit that leaves in a fifteen minute departure, and a kit too heavy to carry is not one that gets loaded quickly either. The one rule that overrides the arithmetic

If officials tell you to leave, leave. Nothing on this page is a reason to stay, to wait for a computed departure time, or to conclude that you have more margin than the order implies. Evacuation orders are issued with the whole area in mind, with information about road capacity and conditions you do not have, and they are usually issued later than emergency managers would like rather than earlier. Treat this calculator as an argument for going sooner than you were planning to, and never as an argument for going later.

How long does it actually take a family to evacuate?

Far longer than the fifteen minutes most people assume. On the defaults here, a household of four with two pets needs roughly an hour and a half to load, and over two hours once a realistic contingency is added, before a single mile is driven. How much longer does an evacuation drive take?

Two to three times the normal journey is an ordinary planning range for a signposted route, and it goes much higher near a bottleneck or when leaving late. An entire region moving onto a few roads within the same few hours produces delays that concentrate at bridges, junctions and lane reductions rather than spreading evenly. Real events have turned one hour drives into five and six hour ones. When should I leave?

Earlier than this calculation says, and immediately if officials have told you to go. The purpose of working back from a deadline is to show that the start time is much earlier than it feels, not to identify the last safe moment. There is no allowance in this arithmetic for a road already closed, a family member who is not home, a vehicle that needs fuel or an animal that will not be caught, and all of those are ordinary. The deadline in the field belongs to the authorities who issued it, and it is set with information about the whole area that you do not have.

What should already be done before an evacuation is likely?

Three things that cost nothing on a quiet day and cannot be done on a bad one. Decide where you are going and tell them, so the destination is arranged rather than improvised. Write down two routes on paper, since the primary one may be closed and navigation depends on a network that may not be there. And keep the vehicle above half a tank through any season when evacuation is plausible, which removes a stop from the journey at the point when every fuel station on the route has a queue or has run dry. Should I evacuate or stay put?

That is not a question for a calculator, and this one deliberately does not answer it. The decision rests on the specific hazard, your specific location and the instructions issued by the authorities responsible for it, who have information about conditions, road capacity and the shape of the event that no general tool has. If an order or advisory to leave has been issued for your area, the answer is to leave.
