The divider is what costs you the bottles
Every rack type on this page is doing the same arithmetic — how many circles fit on a rectangle — and the differences come almost entirely from what sits between the circles. An individual cubby rack puts a piece of wood on all four sides of every bottle. If that stock is three quarters of an inch, a bottle that is 3.1 inches across occupies a 4.1 inch pitch. A diamond bin puts wood only around the outside of the bin, so the same bottle occupies 3.35 inches and the bottles nest into each other rather than sitting on a grid.

Half again as many bottles on the same wall, purely because the wood came out. Drop the divider stock from 3/4 to 1/2 inch and the cubby figure recovers to 1,029, which is most of the argument for building racking out of thinner material than looks right.
The reason nobody builds a cellar entirely out of diamond bins is that a bin is a heap: to get a specific bottle out of the middle you disturb the ones above it, and you cannot read a label that is buried. The usual compromise is cubbies at chest and eye height where you browse, and bins high and low where you keep case quantities of one thing.
Diameter is the input that moves everything
Most rack plans are drawn for a Bordeaux bottle at 3.0 to 3.1 inches. A Burgundy bottle is 3.3 to 3.5, a Champagne bottle 3.4 to 3.6, and some producers now use bottles heavy enough that they will not enter a cubby built for a standard 750. Because the count goes as the square of the pitch in a bin, going from 3.1 to 3.5 inches is not a 13% loss but closer to 22%.
The practical version of this: measure three or four bottles from what you actually drink, use the widest one for the cubby size, and accept the lost density. A cubby that will not take a bottle is worth nothing at all, so the cost of building slightly generous is much lower than the cost of building slightly tight.
Depth, and the row you will forget
A 13.5 inch rack takes one 12 inch bottle. A 24 inch rack takes two, and the second one is invisible. Two bottles deep is workable if the back row is deliberately a case of one thing you are ageing and you keep a list. It is a disaster if it is mixed, because the way you find out what is back there is by taking the front row out.
Weight, aisle and the room around it
Wine is dense. A thousand bottles at 2.9 lb is 2,900 lb of glass and liquid before the racking, sitting along one wall in a strip about a foot wide. In cubbies that is roughly 17 linear feet of wall and a footprint near 20 square feet, so about 175 lb per square foot as a line load. On a basement slab this is nothing to think about. On a framed floor in a converted closet or a room over a garage, it is a real question, and the number that answers it is what the floor was designed for — set by the adopted code and by the original framing, not by a calculator. Get it in front of whoever is responsible for the structure before you build.
The aisle field exists because cellars get drawn to the wall line and built to the bottle line. You need to stand in front of a rack, pull a twelve inch bottle straight out, and turn with it. Three feet is comfortable, two and a half is tight, and anything less means you shuffle sideways past your own racking with a bottle in your hand.

How many bottles fit per linear foot of wine racking?
For individual cubbies at a 4.1 inch pitch on a 7 foot high wall, about 57 bottles per linear foot one deep — 46 columns and 20 rows over a 16 foot run. For a diamond bin with the same bottle at 85% packing, around 88. The spread is almost entirely the divider stock: cubby racking spends a large share of the wall on wood, and a bin spends almost none. Change the divider thickness field to a half inch and watch the cubby number move.
Why does the diamond bin number look too good?
Because it is a geometric ceiling with a packing factor applied, and it assumes the whole rack face is bin. A real diamond bin has a frame around it, the corners of each diamond hold nothing useful, and you will not fill the top row to the brim. The packing efficiency field is where you take that back. At 85% the number is optimistic but not silly; drop it to 75% if the bins are small and there are many of them, because the edge losses scale with the number of bins rather than the total area.
What bottle diameter should I use?
Measure yours. A standard 750 ml Bordeaux is about 3.0 to 3.1 inches, Burgundy 3.3 to 3.5, Champagne 3.4 to 3.6. If you build cubbies for 3.1 and later buy Burgundy, those bottles simply will not go in. Build for the widest bottle you expect to store and accept the density loss, or build a mixed wall with a few oversized openings low down for the wide bottles and magnums.
Does this cover magnums and large formats?
Only if you run it separately. A magnum is roughly 4.3 inches across and 14 inches long, so it needs its own openings and its own arithmetic. Put the magnum count into the calculator as its own wall run with its own diameter and length, and subtract that run from the wall you use for 750s. Mixed formats in one grid is the one thing this page cannot do in a single pass.
How much floor space does a cellar need for a given bottle count?
Take the bottles per linear foot from the calculator, divide your target count by it to get the wall run, and then the floor figure is that run times the rack depth plus the aisle. For 1,000 bottles in cubbies at 57 per foot you need about 17.5 linear feet of wall, which is a room roughly 6 by 6 racked on three sides. In diamond bins at 88 per foot the same 1,000 bottles need about 11.5 feet of wall, and at that point the room stops being a wine cellar and starts being a closet. The aisle is what sets the room size after that, not the racking.
