A stepped pond is a stack of prisms
The single most common costing mistake on a small pond is treating it as one rectangle at the deepest depth. The dig is not that. Each shelf is its own rectangular prism, counted only over its own footprint, and the total is the sum.
The defaults are a 14 by 10 ft pond, stepped down 8 inches to a 10 by 7 shelf, then 10 more inches to a 6 by 4 shelf, then 12 more to the floor. That is 14 times 10 times 8 twelfths, plus 10 times 7 times 10 twelfths, plus 6 times 4 times 1, which is 93.33 plus 58.33 plus 24 cubic feet. Total 175.67 cubic feet, or 6.51 cubic yards.
The same 140 square foot footprint dug flat to the full 30 inch depth would be 350 cubic feet, 12.96 cubic yards — very nearly double. On a job where spoil is going out by trailer, that is the difference between one load and two.
The shelves add back to the top area, and that is the check
Every level footprint less the one below it is the bench that level leaves exposed. 140 less 70 is a 70 square foot first shelf. 70 less 24 is a 46 square foot second shelf. The floor is 24. Add them: 70 plus 46 plus 24 is 140, which is the top area, exactly, because those three areas are what the water touches on the way down and nothing is anywhere else.
If your bench areas do not add up to the top footprint you have a profile that overlaps itself, and the calculator clamps each level to the one above so it cannot happen here. It is a small check and it catches transposed numbers immediately.
The shelves change the volume and not the liner
This is the result worth carrying away, and it is exact rather than approximate. Follow the liner from the rim on one side: it runs down the first riser, across the first bench, down the next riser, across the next bench, down to the floor, across the floor, and back up the other side the same way. All the horizontal runs together are exactly the top length, because the benches on the two sides plus the floor tile the top footprint. All the vertical runs on one side together are exactly the total depth.
So the liner length is the top length plus twice the total depth plus the overlap, no matter how the steps are arranged. Four shelves or none, if the footprint and the total depth are the same, the sheet is the same. At the defaults that is 14 plus 5 plus 2, which is 21 ft, by 10 plus 5 plus 2, which is 17 ft — 357 square feet.
The corollary is worth stating plainly: shelves are free in liner and expensive in nothing except the time it takes to cut them. What costs you liner is total depth and footprint, and they cost it twice over because both add to both dimensions.

Spoil is bigger than the hole
Soil out of the ground occupies more room than it did in it, and how much more depends on what the soil is. Twenty percent is a starting figure for something loamy and it is a guess; heavy clay comes out in lumps and swells more. The 6.51 bank yards become 7.81 loose yards at twenty percent, and if a quarter of that is going into a berm rather than onto a trailer, 5.86 yards leave the site, which is one ten yard load.
Whether the spoil can go on a berm at the edge is a site question, not an arithmetic one. Piling it against the rim raises the effective depth on that side and changes where surface water runs, and both of those matter more than the yardage does.
Before the shovel
Call 811. Every time, on every dig, including a shelf eight inches deep on ground you have owned for twenty years. It costs nothing and buried services are not where anybody remembers them being.
And the thing that does not depend on depth at all: water on a property is a drowning hazard for small children, and shallow water is not safe water. Whether it must be fenced, how high, and what the gate has to do are questions for your local building department and your insurer, and neighbouring towns give different answers. Questions people ask
How deep should a wildlife pond be?
This page has no view on that and no number for it. Depth, shelf widths and how much of the pond should be shallow are site and species questions that vary by region, and the sources for them are your state wildlife agency, your county extension office and the conservation organisations that publish pond plans. What this page does is take the profile you decided on and tell you what it costs in digging, spoil and liner, including how much a shelf saves you over digging the whole footprint deep.
Why is the liner the same size whether or not I put shelves in?
Because with vertical risers the horizontal distance the liner covers crossing all the benches plus the floor is exactly the top footprint, and the vertical distance is exactly the total depth. Neither depends on how the steps are arranged. Length is the top length plus twice the total depth plus overlap, and the same for width. A flat 30 in pond and a three step pond on the same footprint both take a 21 by 17 ft sheet at the defaults, while the flat one takes twice the digging.
What do I enter for the step depths?
The drop from one level to the next, not the depth below grade. The first field is grade down to the first shelf, the second is that shelf down to the next, and so on. They add up as you go, which is why the calculator prints the running depth beside each shelf. Entering absolute depths instead would double count and make the volume far too big.
Do I have to fill in all four levels?
No. Only the top level is required. Leave any of level two, three or four blank and the stack stops there — the calculator reads them in order and stops at the first one that is missing or zero, so a one level pond is just a rectangular pit and the arithmetic still works. Each level is also clamped to the footprint of the one above it, so you cannot accidentally build an overhang by typing a bigger number lower down.
How accurate is the spoil figure?
The bank volume is exact for the profile you typed, assuming vertical risers and square corners. Everything after that is an estimate resting on your swell percentage, and swell is genuinely variable — the same twenty percent that fits a loam can be well short for a wet clay that comes out in lumps.
