Printed graphics are quoted by the square foot and bought by the linear foot, and those two units do not line up. Media comes off a roll at a fixed width whether you use all of it or not, so a piece that does not divide neatly into the usable width is paying for a strip of blank vinyl on every single row. That strip never appears in a waste percentage because nobody thinks of it as waste.

Two units that do not line up

You sell square feet of image. You buy linear feet of a roll that has a fixed width. The gap between those two is where printed-graphic pricing goes wrong, and it is not a small gap — the page prints both a cost per square foot of image and a cost per square foot of media, and on most jobs they are a long way apart.

Run the defaults: ten 36 by 24 pieces on a 54 in roll. With an eighth of bleed each side the piece is 36.25 by 24.25, and the usable width after a quarter inch of unprintable edge is 53.5 in. Only one 36.25 in piece fits across, so the job runs ten rows down the roll — a little over twenty feet of media, with 17.25 in of it blank down the side of every row.

Turn it and it is a different job

Turn the same piece ninety degrees and two of them fit across, because 24.25 in goes into the 53.5 in of usable width twice. Now it is five rows instead of ten and the roll length drops to about fifteen and a quarter feet — roughly a quarter less media for an identical printed result, and the width in use goes from 68 percent to 91.

Whether turning helps at all depends entirely on how the piece divides into the usable width, and on some sizes it makes things worse. The page computes both orientations and shows you both lines rather than asserting a rule, then takes the shorter. A RIP will nest for you when you ask; it will also print the long way round all day if nobody asks.

The width loss is not waste, and that is why it hides

Ask anyone what their waste percentage is and you will get a figure for misprints and head strikes and the leader you pull at the start of a roll. Five percent is a normal answer. Nobody counts the strip down the side, because it never got printed on and it never got thrown away in a way that felt like a mistake. It is just the roll being wider than the job.

At the defaults, after choosing the better orientation, that strip is still five inches of a 53.5 in usable width. On a worse-fitting size it can be a third. There are three ways out: a narrower roll, ganging a different job alongside on the same pass, or asking whether the finished size actually has to be 36 in. The third is usually the cheapest conversation in the building.

Ink is the number you have to measure

Every other input here is something you can read off an invoice. Ink per square foot is not. A photographic full bleed and a black wordmark on white are the same square footage and can differ by a factor of five in millilitres. The only source worth using is the ink usage report your RIP writes for the actual file at the actual profile — and it changes when the profile changes, which is why a shop that switched media last month and never re-measured is quoting on a number that is no longer true.

What is not in here

File prep. The proof. The setup, and the second setup after the customer moves the logo. The roll change. The reprint when a head fired dry across the middle of a piece. Those either live inside the shop rate, because it was built from a year of real hours, or they live nowhere and the job loses money quietly. This page will not find them for you; it will only tell you what the material and the machine time cost once the job is on the roll.

Questions people ask

How do I work out the cost per square foot of a printed sign?

Add the media, the laminate, the ink and the machine and finishing time, then divide by the square feet of image you are actually selling. The trap is dividing by the square feet of media instead, which is a bigger number, or dividing by the image area while costing the media at image area too. The page prints both figures so the gap between them is visible.

Why does my media cost more than the square footage suggests?

Because the roll has a fixed width and the piece probably does not divide into it evenly. A 36 in piece on a 54 in roll leaves seventeen inches blank down the side of every row, and you bought all of it. Does turning the piece on the roll actually save material?

Sometimes, and it can also cost material. It depends on how each dimension divides into the usable width. At the default sizes, turning the piece takes the run from about twenty feet to about fifteen because two fit across turned and only one fits as drawn. There is not one, and any figure quoted as general is a guess about coverage. Take it from the ink usage report your RIP produces for the specific file at the specific profile. Should the price come from cost divided by one minus the margin?

That is the arithmetic the page shows, and it is only arithmetic. It assumes the cost figure includes everything, which it does not — file prep, proofing, setup, reprints and the roll change are not in here and belong in the shop rate. What margin to work at is a question about your market and your overhead that no calculator has any business answering.
