The shelf tag is not always comparable
Most US states require a unit price on the shelf tag, and where it exists it is the fastest check you can make. The catch is that the required unit is not always the same between products, and stores are not consistent about it even within a category. One tag says price per ounce, the one beside it says price per 100 sheets, the one below says price per quart. Two products in the same aisle can be tagged in different units, at which point the tags are decoration and you are back to doing the arithmetic.
The other failure is more subtle. Unit pricing is computed from the package's stated net contents, which can be measured by weight on one product and by volume on another — common in cleaning products, cooking oils and anything sold as both a concentrate and a ready-to-use dilution. Those two tags cannot be compared, and nothing on the shelf says so.
Weight, volume and count are different questions

This tool refuses to compare across those three, and that refusal is the correct answer rather than a missing feature. Converting a pound of something into fluid ounces requires its density, which is not on the package and is not the same for two brands of the same product. Converting a count into a weight requires the piece size. Where the products genuinely are directly substitutable and you have the density, convert the sizes yourself first and enter both in the same base.
US and metric sizes side by side
Mixed sizing is normal now — a 500 mL bottle next to a 16 fl oz one, a 1 kg bag next to a 2 lb bag. The conversions used here are the exact definitions: one US fluid ounce is 29.5735 millilitres, one avoirdupois ounce is 28.3495 grams, one pound is 16 ounces, one gallon is 128 fluid ounces. Everything is converted to a common base before any comparison happens, so a metric and a US package compare correctly.
What can look wrong is the labelling. A 500 mL bottle is 16.907 fl oz and is usually printed as 16.9. A 2 lb bag is 907 g and is often printed as 900 g. Those roundings are on the package, not in the arithmetic, and they are small enough to ignore unless two products are within about half a percent of each other — in which case the unit price is not what should decide it.
When the cheapest unit price is the wrong buy
Unit price answers exactly one question: what does this cost per unit at the till. It knows nothing about whether you will use it. A gallon of a two-part epoxy at 40 percent less per ounce is worse value than a pint if it kicks off in the can in eighteen months and you use a cup a year. The same applies to anything with a shelf life, anything that separates or absorbs moisture, and anything that needs storage space you do not have.
There is also a cash-flow dimension that unit price hides entirely, and it is the reason bulk buying is not universally available advice: the cheaper rate requires the larger outlay today. Buying the size you can afford, more often, at a worse rate, is a perfectly rational decision, and it is worth naming rather than treating as a failure to optimise. Work out the unit price so the trade-off is visible, then make the trade-off on purpose.
Questions people ask
Is the bigger package always cheaper per unit?
No, and the exceptions are frequent enough to make checking worthwhile every time. Promotions on small sizes, multi-buy offers, and the well-documented practice of pricing a mid-size package above the rate of both the small and the large one all reverse the expected order. Club-store sizes are usually but not always cheaper per unit than a supermarket large size. The only reliable method is to divide, which takes about four seconds once the numbers are in front of you.
Why will it not compare a 32 oz bag against a 32 fl oz bottle?
Because those are different quantities that share a word. An ounce is a unit of weight and a fluid ounce is a unit of volume, and converting between them requires the density of the specific product. For water they happen to be close — a US fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 ounces — but that coincidence does not extend to oil, honey, solvent, flour or anything else. If you know the density, convert to a single base yourself and enter both products in that base.
Does this account for coupons, sales tax or loyalty pricing?
No. It uses the price you enter, so enter the price you will actually pay. If a coupon applies to one size only, put the post-coupon price in for that one — that is the comparison you care about. Sales tax is usually a flat percentage across both products and therefore cancels out of the comparison; where it does not, such as a state that taxes some grocery categories differently, enter tax-inclusive prices for both.
What does the "per 100 count" figure mean?
For anything sold by the piece — screws, blades, wipes, sheets — the headline number is the price for 100 of them, because per-item prices are often fractions of a cent and hard to compare at a glance. The table also shows the per-item price beside it. Both are the same number scaled differently, so use whichever is easier to hold in your head when you are standing in front of the shelf.
