Why narrow shells are a different problem
Build a wall in a house and it takes a few inches out of a room that had plenty. Build the same wall in a shell that is 92 inches wide and it takes those inches from a dimension you were already rationing, and it takes them twice because the wall happens on both sides. The loss is symmetric and it is unavoidable — insulation has to go somewhere, and in a shell with a rigid outer skin the only place it can go is inward.
So the arithmetic is interior width = shell width − 2 × assembly, and every design conversation about insulation in a container is really a conversation about that subtraction. A two inch assembly leaves 88 inches. A four inch assembly leaves 84. Between those two numbers sits the question of whether a 25 inch counter run and a person can occupy the same section of floor at the same time.
Length behaves differently from width
The end walls take the same thickness but there are only two of them across a much longer dimension, so proportionally they cost almost nothing. On a 20 foot container, 3.5 inches at each end is under three percent of the length. On the width it is nearly eight percent. This is the general rule for small buildings: assembly loss is a perimeter cost while floor is an area quantity, and the narrower the dimension the harder the perimeter bites.
The practical consequence is that lengthwise decisions are cheap and crosswise decisions are expensive. Move a bathroom along the length and nothing much happens; make its wall thicker for sound and you have spent width you needed.
Height, which people forget until the roof is on
Ceiling insulation comes down and floor insulation comes up, and both eat the same head height. In a standard height container this is the constraint that decides whether a loft is possible at all. A high cube shell buys about a foot, and that foot is usually the entire reason to pay for one.

How wide is a shipping container inside?
A little over 92 inches between the inside faces of the corrugated side panels on a standard 8 foot container, but the honest answer is to measure the one in front of you, because corrugation depth, repairs and manufacturing tolerance all move it. That figure is the starting point for this page and everything you add comes off it twice, once on each side.
How much width does insulating a container cost?
Twice the assembly thickness, because the assembly happens on both long walls. Two inches per side is four inches of room; four inches per side is eight. Where that lands matters more than the number itself: it decides whether a counter run and a walking aisle coexist. The tradeoff is thickness against interior width rather than thickness against cost, which is the one situation where a thin high performance assembly can genuinely earn its price.
Can I leave the container walls uninsulated to save width?
