A forty by eighty tent does not fit on a forty by eighty patch of ground. The stakes sit outside the frame, the guy lines run out to them at an angle, and the cleared area you actually need is closer to forty-eight by eighty-eight — a third more ground than the tent covers. That is the number that collides with a fence line, a row of parked cars or a buried service, and it is worth having before the truck arrives rather than after.

The tent is smaller than the site it needs

Forty by eighty is 3,200 square feet of cover. The stakes go four feet outside the leg line all the way round, so the ground that has to be clear and stakeable is 48 by 88, or 4,224 square feet. That is 1,024 square feet more than the tent, a third again, and it is the belt of ground that is never on the site plan.

It is also where everything else already is. The fence, the parked cars, the neighbouring marquee, the edge of the paving, and whatever runs under the site. Locating buried services before anything is driven into the ground is a job of its own and no calculator replaces it.

Legs come out of the bay grid

Forty by eighty on twenty foot bays is two bays across and four along, so the grid has three lines of legs by five — fifteen legs on a frame tent. Twelve of them are on the perimeter and three are standing in the middle of the floor.

Those three matter more than the count suggests. A leg in the middle of a room is a table that cannot go there, a sightline that is blocked, and a dance floor that has to shift. It is the first thing to check against a seating layout and the last thing anybody remembers. Drop to ten foot bays on the same tent and the grid becomes five by nine — 45 legs, 21 of them inside. The bay module is not a detail.

Stakes are spacing or legs, whichever is more

A forty by eighty tent has a 240 foot perimeter. At ten foot spacing that is 24 anchor points, comfortably more than the twelve perimeter legs, so spacing governs. Tighten the tent to twenty by forty and the perimeter is 120 feet — twelve points from spacing against six perimeter legs, and spacing still governs. The page takes whichever is larger because you cannot anchor fewer points than you have legs.

Guy line follows from geometry. Eight feet up and four feet out is 8.94 feet a run, times 24 points, plus fifteen percent for knots and tension, is 247 feet of line. Nothing subtle in it, but it is the sort of thing that gets ordered by eye and comes up short.

Ballast has no default here on purpose

Choose ballast instead of stakes and the weight per point field sits at zero, and the page refuses to total anything until you fill it in with a figure somebody qualified has given you for this tent on this site. That is deliberate. How much weight an anchor point needs depends on the tent, the exposure, the ground and the wind the structure has to stand, and it is engineering done by the manufacturer and the engineer of record on the permit.

Wind uplift on a tent kills people. A tent is a large sail on light legs and the loads in weather are not intuitive. There is no anchoring capacity calculated anywhere on this page, no adequacy verdict, and no procedure for putting one up, holding it down, watching it or taking it down. Those belong to the people whose job they are.

Sidewall is a subtraction

240 feet of perimeter, two ten foot doors, leaves 220 feet to wall. Twenty foot panels give eleven, covering 220 exactly at the defaults, which is tidier than it usually comes out. Half walling drops it to 120 feet of run, less the same two doors, so 100 net and five panels covering exactly 100. When the net run is not a whole number of panels the answer prints both the net run and what the panels cover, and the difference is the overhang you will be trimming or tucking.

Doors are worth entering honestly rather than leaving at whatever number sounds right. Every foot of opening is a foot of panel you did not need, and every foot of panel you skip is a place the weather comes in.

The run being walled, less the door openings, divided by the panel width and rounded up. A fully walled 40 by 80 with two ten foot doors is 220 feet net, which is eleven twenty foot panels. Walling two sides instead is 100 feet net after the same two doors, so five panels with nothing left over.
