Lane hours, not lanes
The unit that actually measures a swim programme is the lane hour: one lane, available for one hour. Six lanes for an hour is six lane hours, and so is three lanes for two hours. Once a programme is expressed that way, most of the arguments about the timetable resolve themselves, because the two things people usually treat as interchangeable stop being interchangeable.
Adding a lane multiplies capacity by whatever the loading is — five swimmers, at five to a lane, in every session of the week. Adding a session multiplies it by the whole lane block — thirty, at six lanes of five — but only once a day. Which wins has an exact boundary: a session is worth more than a lane whenever you have more usable lanes than you already have sessions in the day, and a lane is worth more the moment the day has more sessions than the pool has lanes. Six lanes and three sessions is comfortably the first case, at 150 places a week against 75. Two lanes and four sessions is the second. The calculator prints both so the comparison is in front of you rather than in an argument.
Why the loading is an input and always will be
How many swimmers belong in one lane is not a number this page has. It depends on the length of the pool, the width of the lane, what the group is doing, how the lane is being circled, who is watching, and what your health department requires of your facility — and it is set by your facility operator, who is accountable for it in a way a web page is not.
What the page can do is show you the consequence. At 25 yards and five to a lane, each swimmer has five yards of lane to themselves. At eight to a lane it is a little over three. Those are the same numbers your deck staff are looking at when they decide whether a lane is working, and putting them next to the capacity total is the useful part.
Attendance is not registration
The gap between the roll and the deck is where timetables fail. A programme with 120 registered swimmers and a 70 per cent turnout has 84 people in the building on a given day, and if they are spread over three sessions that is 28 a session against 30 places — comfortable, until a school holiday moves everyone into one session.
Use your own attendance figures, averaged over several weeks rather than taken from a good one. If you have never measured it, the number worth measuring first is not the average but the spread: capacity has to survive the busiest realistic evening, not the typical one.

Lane counts, per-lane loadings, lane widths, course lengths, send-off intervals, spacings and session lengths are fields you fill in from your health department, your facility operator, the governing body you compete under, the event organiser or your coach. The page holds none of them, does not know which apply to you, and nothing it prints is a statement of what any pool, programme, event or competition requires.
Drowning is the hazard behind all of this, and it is quiet and fast. Who watches the water, how many of them there are, what they are qualified to do and when the pool may open at all are decided by your health department and your facility operator. This page contains no ratio, no procedure and no requirement of any kind on that subject, and a number it prints is never a reason to believe an activity is adequately watched.
There is no coaching on this page. Nothing here is training guidance, a workout, a conditioning plan, a stroke correction or anything medical, and no number it prints should be read as what any swimmer needs or can do. It converts times, distances and counts into other times, distances and counts. What a swimmer should actually be doing in the water is a question for a coach.
Questions people ask
How many swimmers can you put in one lane?
This page does not answer that and no honest calculator does. It is set by your facility operator, working under whatever your health department requires, and it depends on the pool length, the lane width, what the swimmers are doing in the lane, whether they are circling, and how the water is being watched. The figure that comes out of that decision is what you type into the loading field. What the arithmetic can tell you is the consequence: at five to a lane in a 25 yard pool each swimmer has five yards of lane, at eight they have a little over three, and the capacity total moves in direct proportion. Treat the loading as the input it is and get it from the people who are accountable for it.
Should I count lanes or lane hours?
Lane hours, for anything involving a timetable. A lane is only capacity while it is available, and most pools have lanes that are yours for four hours a day and someone else's for the rest. Multiplying lanes by the hours you actually hold them gives a number you can compare between two versions of a timetable, which a raw lane count cannot do. It also makes the trade obvious. On a five-day week of three one-hour sessions in six lanes, an extra session adds six lane hours a day and so thirty a week; an extra lane adds one lane hour in each of fifteen sessions, which is fifteen. Change the shape of the week and the ranking changes with it, which is why the calculator recomputes it rather than stating a rule of thumb. Why is my utilisation over 100 per cent?
Because the number of swimmers expected in a session is larger than the places in the water at your loading. That is arithmetic, not a warning — plenty of programmes run that way and absorb it by splitting groups across sessions, by moving people to a different night, or by the fact that the whole roll never shows up at once. The page prints how many places short you are and how many lanes it would take at your current loading, and stops there. Whether the answer is more lanes, more sessions, a different loading or a waiting list is a decision for your facility, and the loading in particular is not something to raise because a calculator made it fit.
What does the changeover field do?
It separates water you have booked from water anyone swims in. If sessions run at six, seven and eight but each one ends ten minutes early to clear the lanes, you are paying for three hours of pool and getting two and a half hours of swimming. The lane hours figure counts only the swimming; the water hours figure counts everything you are billed for or everything the pool is blocked out for. On a five-day, three-session week a ten-minute changeover is two and a half hours of pool time, which is generally worth knowing before renegotiating a lane rental.
Does this tell me whether my sessions are safely staffed?
No, and nothing on it should ever be read that way. Supervision, lifeguarding, who watches which lane and whether a session may run at all are governed by your health department and your facility operator. This page counts places in water and hours on a timetable. Drowning is quiet and fast, and the people qualified to decide how a session is watched are not this calculator. Ask them, and treat every number here as an input to that conversation rather than an answer within it.
